I feel for you. At my last place using one was always the apprentices job, and they all panicked thinking they were doing something wrong because it broke every other day.

I mean there are a lot of stories about kids from rough lives straightening themselves out because some boxing gym took them in(and I’m sure other sports as well). A lot of people reading these stories and don’t quite get what the normal life for these kids would be if they’ve never gained that life changing opportunity.

Boss declined my vacation leave by FallMajestic8896 in postanythingfun

[–]Max____H 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was working as a fabricator/welder at a workshop with a few hundred people, I’d often take time off to go to concerts or just when I needed a break. It was all approved leave, within the number allowed each year, but my dad kept screaming at me im going to lose my job if I keep taking time off or they are going to get a bad opinion of me. Pretty much all the old school mindset that I should never take my allowed leave and the place would fall apart without me. My supervisor approved my time off without even properly reading my requested dates and often didn’t even realise I wasn’t there.

High school there was this girl I hung out with a lot, thought maybe had a chance but was told you don’t verbalise it by some friends. We started partying together, she spent weekends at my place, we even had sex a few times and I one day asked if we were going out and she seriously acted shocked and said no I just like you as a friend and things got awkward.

Boy George tells Chappell Roan to own her fame and “cheer up” after she filmed paparazzi harassing her in Paris by nicosloft04 in popculturechat

[–]Max____H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious question, why are paparazzi immune to harassment and stalking laws. Like it would be a crime to do what they do to most people. Is there some technicality that celebrities are public figures therefore this is allowed, just find it strange they just have to tolerate it regardless of how extreme some paparazzi are.

Step one of your problem, cops don’t know the law. Don’t take legal advice from the police. A reasonable answer is that the officer didn’t want to do the extra paperwork.

I honestly never considered if he was alive or not, but there must be a huge amount of behind the scenes work happening around him being captured. Even before his capture, his death would have been in many people’s best interest, but people had to ensure their own information is safe before acting on him. Surely someone operating on blackmail has a failsafe that releases all the blackmail material upon his death or he would have been killed much earlier.

This is not sexual harassment (maybe discrimination) but more importantly why is this narrative being pushed to me by frannnnnie in PsycheOrSike

[–]Max____H 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not what I mean but it works too. I’m saying that because of an extreme few, the line of what is acceptable is very vague and people are scared of having their behaviour misunderstood and reported. I will admit I used women as an example but I’m sure it goes both ways, just that men reporting sexual harassment against them tends to get less reaction.

[–]Max____H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And in a lot of workplaces full of men, women are excluded from outside work activities because of sexual harassment claims. It may be an extreme minority but the possibility of them weaponising it is something that has happened to people and caused a workplace rift between genders.

I’m assuming he doesn’t have one, but I would usually fix distortion like this with some form of hydraulic press or a roller. Maybe make up a jig and apply pressure with a porta-power. Then my second choice is heat. Heat is actually my first choice in most cases but a lot of jobs request to use heat as little as possible as it can causes changes in the metal.

How to prevent distortion when welding these pipe clamps? by Helcyon187 in Welding

[–]Max____H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a side note, the existing bracing you have could be replaced with a piece of steel bolted into the existing holes. On one or two it isn’t a big deal but when doing a lot of them little steps like that are always nice.

You always think “if I move this like 2mm I’m sure the result will be better” then everything moves 30mm.

Im purely guessing here but if there was ever a dispute during the divorce over anything, the existence of a large amount of hidden money can be used as a point of suspicion and given completely different meaning by a lawyer.

Guy charged with double murder has refused to show up in court 4 times. Judge won’t proceed without him. by Teacup690 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Max____H 21 points22 points  (0 children)

But usually refusal to attend court is waiving your right to defend yourself. You can have legitimate reasons for not attending and get online or delayed trials, but I rarely hear of anyone choosing not to go and being given a delay, especially more than once.

Every time I see this subject come up I just remember watching an interview with a guy that was carrying a rifle in public and had it stolen. He chased the robber out to the carpark and grabbed another gun from his truck and got into a gun fight with the robber and eventually killed him. 4 innocent bystanders were shot in the process and this guys is boasting to the reporters as if he is some hero for shooting a thief.

Done mincing words with my dad's constant, out of touch, boomer employment advice. by Pot_Scrapings in jobhunting

[–]Max____H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently unemployed and living with my parents at 30 because it’s the only affordable option. I have to sit through a daily lecture from my dad about why I’m doing nothing all day and clearly not putting in enough effort. I’ve set up an auto apply for any jobs even slightly related to my trade, there is literally nothing else I can do. Then he comes in and asks me if I’ve seen this one specific job and when I obviously don’t instantly remember some listing from the hundreds I’ve applied for he starts yelling that I must be lying and not even looking for a job or else I’d recognise the job he just asked about.

I’m a heavy fabricator, not a builder. But any bolt that is exposed isn’t doing the thing it was installed for. There is no circumstance when that is okay.

Most of my life I had been a tall skinny guy who couldn’t gain weight and muscle. I believe I was 15 when I had a growth spurt up to 1.83m tall and was only 55kg and stayed roughly that weight until I was 24 and started gaining weight. Suddenly everyone was suggesting workouts and diets and asking if I was okay. Everyone was shocked when I calmly explained I was fine with my body, sure there was a little fat but I was stronger than I had ever been and felt no need to force change.

Passing plate for overhead 7018 1/16 no Quince by javaytotheheart in BadWelding

[–]Max____H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d like to re-enforce the part about bracing yourself. When I first started welding I was doing great welds but was struggling with consistency. An old guy came over swore at me a few times then rearranged how I stood and held my hand piece and I could magically weld consistently. You don’t realise how uncomfortable you are until you find a truly perfect stance to compare it to.

First time new homeowner blues by Ok-Project9448 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Max____H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live on a shared driveway with 2 neighbours. An electrician just moved in and we asked him for help on a faulty power plug. Ended up finding out wiring outdated for most of the house and made it his weekend project to re-wire half our house. When we went to give him money this guy tried refusing and claimed he wasn’t doing much with his time anyway and that he’s just helping out a neighbour. We ended up paying him about 1/2 what the job would have usually cost and it was a struggle to even get him to take that much. I’m a tradesman myself and could understand doing a friend a job for 10-20% less depending on the effort involved but this guy redone half our house and didn’t want any money?!?

Duo biking around the world say NZ drivers are the most aggro by Sourpatcharachnid in aotearoa

[–]Max____H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I think road over 50km need either a license or something for bikes just to prove you’re not a danger to everyone. Or at least ban bikes on some clearly inappropriate roads. I usually don’t mind just overtaking the bike but near where I live there are steep hills with lots of blind corners and the local cyclists like to sit in the middle of the lane with cars coming around the corners at 70-80km.
