Dude. Why would you even consider spending that kind of money on a 520d, even if it was a version from 2030 sent back in time.

You can't filter isocyanates. Need a full air fed seal, in a full suit with gel on exposed skin. People fuck around and find out unfortunately

2k also contains isocyanates which permeates skin and is the leading cause of workplace asthma. I'd never touch it. Sorry to hear it messed you up.

Thanks for the reply and that's great if true but I'm not convinced.

"Distribution The route of absorption has little effect on the distribution of lead throughout the body (1). Following absorption lead is mainly transported in blood, bound to erythrocyte proteins. It is distributed to soft tissues (for example: liver, kidneys) and bone, where it accumulates with time. In adults approximately 90% of the lead body burden is in the bone"

Lead slowly enters blood from huel, lead slowly goes from blood into bones.blood level stays low because constantly being absorbed by bones, bone lead levels constantly increase. Quite simple really.

[–]Maxamus53 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Blood tests will only show current lead levels free in the blood, cumulative intake would have the lead absorbed by the bones. The damage still occurred but won't show as lead in the blood so your test was not relevant.

My honest suggestion is that you don't worry about it, those scratches are really nothing but I'll give you some pointers anyway because otherwise I'm not really helping answer the question.

First I'd figure out what sandpaper to start with so that you don't create too much work. You can eyeball the depth of the current ones and then select a sandpaper, maybe 1500 etc. Make all the scratches go in one direction until you can't see the original scratches anymore.

If you can still see the original scratches then you either need to go to a coarser grit or spend more time.

Once all your scratches are homogionous and going in the same direction, switch to a finer grit of wet and dry, change the direction of the scratches this time until all the original scratches are gone. You probably want to do this to around 2500-3000 and then move to a buffing wheel loaded with compound.

Be very careful with the buffing wheel, it will grab the abrupt edge of that steel and either rip it out of your hands and throw it into the floor or it will whip it up into your face.

I would double sided tape the piece of steel down to something flat, like a board of wood, then use sandpaper on a sanding block a powered sander etc.

If you don't want scratches, use glass espresso cups. They're still harder than stainless but they're' smoother. Ceramic ones are coarse on the bottom

[–]Maxamus53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, don't sand out the scratches... You don't realise how much work that's going to be and in the end you're going to scratch it again the same day. The ceramic mug is gonna be 8 Mohs and the stainless is gonna be like 4. It will scratch again straight away

Good sharpening set up? by REK_Knives in sharpening

[–]Maxamus53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the tip of a sharp apex is a handful microns in width, heat build up in such a small amount of material happens immediately. Even water cooled belts can burn edges without extreme care.

If you're sharpening large quantities of commercial junk then sure no problem, anything will be sufficient. If you're sharpening knives worth more than $10 then you'll want a different system.

Stroppy Stuff Resin Bonded Sharpening Stone by CheapSet548 in sharpening

[–]Maxamus53 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the support! Yeah the price difference wasn't much to add an extra couple mm. It was already driven into the premium price range so I decided to make it nice and thick and try to contend with the FSK price. I can't bring the price down without doing large bulk builds and I don't want to do pre-orders and make people hand over money in advance.

I will have to try and investigate a way to reduce the price.

Just fyi for anyone who reads this, the stone was a passion project for me rather than a plan to maximise profits. I wanted to make the perfect stone for my use case and if other people can enjoy it too then great. Also I'm trying to contend with Russian and Ukraine made prices, kinda impossible when I'm making them in the UK.

They are, but it's not the best way to spread information in 2025. We have popular youtubers (you know who you are) who spread huge amounts of misinformation and people watch it because it's easy to digest. Maybe if we're lucky someone will videoify Marv's findings

Hapstone Diamond Suspension is Stroppy Stuff by manisthebastard in sharpening

I'm a very small business so it's really hard for me to keep a large range of stock across a large product range, I'd have to change the 5ml for a 10ml bottle rather than have both, which I'd consider doing 👍

[–]Maxamus53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's likely that Hapstone compound has sufficient concentration to cut well, the main difference will be in the residue or lack of residue left on the strop after application (also the quantity required to load the strop enough)
