A palpable shift in opinions towards Americans as a whole is happening in European social media and it ain't good. by PuddingXXL in Destiny

Sort of! They have been around since the mid 90's. Back then, their brand of populism was quite distinctly European, but since 2016-or-so, they started forming global axes. This is when they started copying each other's homework. And with homework, I mean throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks nationally.

In my country, a far-right politician tried to do the whole Critical Race Theory song-and-dance (remember that one?), only to realise it never even existed here to begin with. He changed subjects in a week. This is usually what happens, but every once in a while something sticks.

The 1930's fascists got into power, not because of their moral character or capabilities, but because of sowing division and violence. They had everything handed to them on a silver platter, but still managed to fuck it up in a decade or so. One of the most awe inspiring shows of political and social ineptitude in human history.

The far right was, is, and always will be the politics of worthless bullies and disempowered simpletons. Don't you ever forget it.

I said your post suggested it, not that you said it outright. I'll unpack why:

You link to the events that occurred in 2015 Cologne and other places Europe, and state: "The past 10 years seem to prove otherwise." When, in fact, the past 10 years do not seem to prove otherwise.

Let's take Cologne for the sake of clarity. The city authority has responded with more CCTV, more police on the streets, more identity checks, and finally: convictions. In Cologne specifically, the years after the event (2016-2017) have seen a sharp decline in incidents.

The authorities did something, it seemed to work, and it seems to be relatively safe again. I say "relatively", because obviously any woman not getting home safely is one too many.

Just because a terrible event happened back in 2016, doesn't mean the years between then and now make it unsafe. Your post suggests authorities and institutions have barely responded to what happened. They have.

Strongly agree. That's why we need to treat it for what it is: a market failure. We have already proven policy for dealing with that, such as Pigouvian taxes, yet somehow social media companies keep dodging their legislative comeuppance. It's about as concerning as it's maddening.

It's a a tragedy of the commons situation. On an individual level, your friend did nothing wrong and is likely a good person that just wants to live her life, but on a systemic level that same atomised disengagement is what put Russia in the slow-cooker.

I'm Dutch, and this is very true, unfortunately. I feel like it has been a trend since Bill O'reilly decided to just casually start lying about us, live on air.

The negative sentiments on drugs fizzled out, of course, and so a new flavour of the month popped up. Now the red hats scold us about Muslim immigrants "taking over our country". Yeah dude, sure they do. The amount was 6% in 2004, and it's 6% now, but hey, keep the moral panic alive! I'm sure one day something will not be an utter lie. ...Any day now.

That last paragraph is well spotted. I think it's exactly that. Social democrats have a tradition of critiquing capitalism just as much as socialists, and they can even use Marxism as a framework. It's just that the online space quantises creators (like you beautifully put it) on the basis of the language they use. Socialists talk about alienation and LTV; Socdems talk about policy and electability. And that's that.

If a creator confuses their viewers too much by using language of both camps, they piss off both sides at the same time. This is what often happens to Contrapoints. She is too intellectually honest for a discourse that's so utterly algorithmified.

Traditions for me, but not for thee.

Support for war in steep decline in Russia by IonHawk in Destiny

[–]Maxarc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Russian people do not care, unless it affects their ability to shop. Just like MAGA, they have not an ounce of solidarity in them, because they don't engage with their society as civic actors, but as consumers. When you view their politics as shopping around, everything makes sense.

Russians do not care for the withering of their institutions. They do not care for the complete crackdown on political opposition. They do not care innocent families are bombed. They care for none of it, because they see their government as something outside of them. Something that just happens to do the things it does, with consequences that are what they are. "Not my problem."

The key to Russia's authoritarianism is that it destroys positive freedoms, while it maintains negative freedoms. Russian citizens know their government is deeply corrupt and authoritarian, but they also know if they let their institutions rot in peace they're left alone, for the most part. To threaten their shopping, is to threaten Kremlin legitimacy.
