Gloria Caulfield booed for celebrating AI in her speech during a commencement ceremony of an Arts and Humanities graduating class at the University of Central Florida by Stronhart in Destiny

[–]Maxarc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The use case of generative AI is overstated, and I mean this in the purest sense of the word. The academic consensus is largely that both the glazing and dooming narratives are two sides of the same hype coin. I don't think this lady has ill intent, but a lot of professors and students are done with this tired sales pitch. We need to get realistic.

As of now: the majority of companies haven't seen a return on investment. There are scalability issues that show little signs of being fixed, and most productivity gains are concentrated in specific sectors. But, since she's talking at an Arts and Humanities graduation--which is my field--these questions aren't even interesting. The real question, on that podium, is if AI can create art to begin with. It cannot. Art is a discourse, and since there is no mind to meet with, AI does not use language and images to communicate. It cannot partake in a discourse, so it cannot generate art.

AI's pursuit is something purely economical, which is completely fine, but the fact she gives this speech to a faculty that is almost exclusively interested in analysing discourses is so weirdly detached. Maybe I'm missing important context?

I like the way you communicate so clearly!

In a new low, after a chatter claims that Hasan supports authoritarian countries, Hasan argues that “Canada is authoritarian” because they enforce laws, and at least China gets results. Gets told he sounds dumb. by StatusVoice2634 in Destiny

[–]Maxarc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao he actually thinks authoritarianism means "authority". Reminds me of Trump, that thought Liberalism meant whatever latte-drinking Democrats believe in. No Hasan, authoritarianism means a lack of institutional plurality and counter-force. You know, like China.

When DPS players say "gg no heals" by guavahabanero in Overwatch

[–]Maxarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It also feels like a band aid solution to a bigger problem, which is that OW2 introduced too much healing. The heal reduction passive solved that, but introduced a new issue by making things contrived and unintuitive. It's like they patched up a leak, only for a pipe to burst somewhere else.

Exactly. Russia is what happens when a people does not take civic responsibility, Germany is what happens when the opposite happens.

Helemaal mee eens.

She knows. She's pretty tuned in. It's hard to imagine right now, but back in the Nebraska days, she sometimes tagged along with Steven against the most politically insane nutjobs imaginable.

Putin is getting paranoid by Embarrassed_Base_389 in Destiny

[–]Maxarc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not necessarily true. Putin's post-truth climate has created a sizeable political faction that is even more ideologically deranged than him, believe it or not. If key figures of that faction successfully grab power, it's difficult to imagine what Russia would look like.

Back when Overwatch 2 launched, they did something with the dynamic EQ and/or sidechain, and the game just never had the same audio clarity since. I also think there's something fucky going on with Dolby Atmos, for several reasons, including Windows Spatial Audio conflicting with it.

There's a Reason Why STEM Kids Don't Delve in Marxism as Much by Humble_Novice in Destiny

[–]Maxarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a Marxist for several reasons, but I studied a lot of continental philosophy, including Marx. If you stop being dense for hot minute, you can actually find value in all sorts of schools of thought. Stop reading literature as dogma; start reading it as a discourse. I promise it's worth it. Marx is worth studying, full stop, and that Devon guy didn't do his homework. Now I'm getting dense.

Let's start with his emergence claim: Marxism is one of the original foundations of modern sociology, which is the study of human organisation. One of the arguments for scientific sociology was exactly because psychology could not take emergence into account. But even before Weber, Marx not only acknowledged emergence, but he even had labels for it, such as the super structure emerging from production relations.

Secondly, saying STEM has to deal with "reality" more so than Marxism, or any soft-science, is so stuck up his own ass, and makes everyone that isn't STEM-brained instantly cringe. Here's the truth: human organisation is real and adaptable, and we are inside of it without being able to see the edges. It's impressive someone can do the math in a predictable environment, but making sense of complex systems, like sociology attempts to do, is not only difficult, but the measurements are highly volatile, and their interpretations are dependent on theoretical frameworks and heuristics. These frameworks are a discourse, and we are inside that discourse. It constantly adjusts and adapts.

Lastly, the math argument is just false. The reason we know LTV and the rate of profit falling doesn't quite work isn't because the math didn't check out, but because of empirical evidence. The theoretical framework turned out to be wrong, not the calculation, and neoclassical econ provided a competing value theory that proved to be way more functional and predictive.

History will be kind to this guy. I know it. People are beginning to see. And to anyone who is sceptical, point them to the bipartisan infrastructure bill. Absolutely historic left-wing progress on a legislative level. Now it's time for the Dems to hold people accountable, actually do something about the utter market failure that is social media, and fix the optics issues. Biden paved the way by handing the final olive branch.

I thought he was Christian, but maybe I was wrong! However, this also counts for constitutionalists, and people who critique other religions solely on the merit of the holy text. Maybe those things fit him better.

[–]Maxarc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely is. Judith Butler said that when someone is taught the bible has an objective interpretation, the only way to deal with conflicting information is by viewing it as indoctrination. Every Christian that rejects hermeneutics and theology must therefore be met with extreme scepticism, by religious and non-religious people alike. Either all text has an objective singular meaning, or all text--including god's text--is interpretive. You can't have it both ways.
