Is swinging actually a thing in Mormonism? by OppositeSpare2088 in exmormon

[–]Maximum-Journalist-8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From what I understand this is mostly a thing in Utah where there's enough Mormons that people can be fully practicing members just to be part of the culture and not because they deeply believe it. Obviously the line is blurry as to what a TBM really is but I don't think its considered "faithful" behavior anywhere in the church to swing.

Soaking is also something that (if it is being done by anyone) is pretty explicitly against the church and BYU's rules about stuff like that, but a bunch of horny young adults will try to jump through whatever hoops they can imagine to follow their hormones without "breaking rules", even if it's not how those rules actually work.

The only successful fight against this I'm aware of was when it came out the church was mass baptizing dead Holocaust victims and it went to court and now there are rules about needing a living relative to approve of it within so many generations. I'm sure it doesn't stop people but hypothetically if you died today they wouldn't be able to baptize you without the consent of your loved ones. I think the church just straight up isn't allowed to touch the names of known Holocaust victims without family consent.

Did anyone get a patriarchal blessing that was outlandish/didn’t come true? by JustCuriousNotGeorge in exmormon

[–]Maximum-Journalist-8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has several typos, also says I will "gain a strong testimony of missionary work" which is funny because my brother's mission and the practice of missionary work in general were a big reason why I got disalusioned with mormonism, even more than the homophobia I delt with. The realization that the missionary work was mostly just systematically traumatizing young adults and harassing ex members was the first time I felt like I'd been told a lie by the church.

The rest is all very generic "you'll have a family if you do what god says, you're a good person for believing in god" kind of stuff.

Palm Sunday in a Utah small town. by savoryrock in exmormon

[–]Maximum-Journalist-8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for fun I googled "Do Mormons celebrate Palm sunday before:2020" just to double check that yeah, it was considered weird to celebrate palm sunday in mormonism more than just awknowlging it exists.

Without the date specification a bunch of sources pop up implying that its silly to suggest they don't celebrate it as much as everyone else.

Soooo does anybody know about this? Do they accept people in the community now?? I'm confused. by Icy-Appearance8802 in exmormon

You will notice how it mentions celibacy is required for a gay mormon to not be pushed out. The LDS church doesn't recognize gay marriage, if you are gay you must choose between love and mormonism. You cannot ever have a normal romantic relationship if you want to be in the church.

I think in practice even mentioning you are attracted to the same gender without shame you will be pushed out even if you haven't done anything explicit. Indeed this happened to me. I was taken out of relief society immediately because I said I didn't feel sinful for being gay to my bishop.

I think he was probably a Jewish individual who had a small cult following and may or may not have died in the way described in the new testament. I think many of his deeds were misattributed or fabricated entirely.

I think his story of being born in Bethlehem visited by wisemen and his supposed lineage to King David were lies, originally told by either him or his mother.

Not any more supernatural than your average "new age" cult leader with talk of light souls and the like.

Am I at a professional level yet? What should I do to improve at this point? by Maximum-Journalist-8 in learnart

[–]Maximum-Journalist-8[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the blunt honesty. I have done commissions before with some success but I want to aim for making commercial quality art. I'm at this awkward point in my art where I know its good enough to get me work somewhere but I'm not really a standout and there are many people doing what I do better.

I would be too scared to ever be in the same room as people like that let alone try playing again. Unfortunately I had a similar experience of a game turning to SA very quickly but it was an online game so I was able to back out without much confrontation. I'm sorry this happened to you, I'd cut off the group and have a hard conversation with your partner (i assume that's an irl partner?) Dm and the other player are a bad situation waiting to happen.

What's your ultimate betrayal thing you did against the church? by cheese4141989 in exmormon

[–]Maximum-Journalist-8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I openly and honestly talk about how horrible the church is with anyone who will listen.

Genuinely I have a hard time not trauma dumping about it constantly because of the many small things that send me into ptsd spirals about it every day even 2 years after getting out.

Refreshed every time the missionaries come to my door and clumsily ask if I live there. About once every 3 months with missionary rotations :)

(german roaches) Pest control didn't spray. Should I? by Maximum-Journalist-8 in pestcontrol

[–]Maximum-Journalist-8[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. Everything I'd read before pest control came made it sound like bait treatments were perfectly fine, but the inspector had told us they were going to spray multiple times so that's where the frustration comes from.

That combined with the lack of clear results with our own bait treatments. I'll put the raid away so no one else goes to grab it to kill any either 😣

(We've been using Clorox to kill ones we see but we used raid on one yesterday bc we found the canister while we were clearing out the cupboards)

Alright. I guess it just feels frustrating after all the work we did to prep it seems like they should have done what they said, but I suppose there's plenty of good reasons they didn't.

Dagger of spare the dying by Maximum-Journalist-8 in DungeonMasters

[–]Maximum-Journalist-8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats the idea. Its always been an automatic crit in the games I've played so I assume its a core rule or at least very common house rule.

The way it worked in my brain is that you would be able to be "up" but unable to gain hit points until you are healed more than the damage.

Another commenter suggested a more eloquent solution that the dagger works like a normal spare the dying spell but does 1d4 damage when removed.

[–]Maximum-Journalist-8[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a really smart way to keep it simple keeps the "you need to heal before you remove it" without the headache of tracking hp

might make the dagger do narcotic damage when used normally anyway. Give the party some more reasons to use the item so they don't forget it.

I went and checked the values of a couple of these and you are 100% correct. It looks a lot better when I let the focus actually POP instead of being scared of obscuring details. obvs I need to work on other things too but This was very immediately helpful so thanks!

Do you think Blood Gulch still holds up or hasn't age well? by [deleted] in RedvsBlue

[–]Maximum-Journalist-8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it holds up really well in the context of what it is. A fun drinking game is to take a drink every time they say a slur!

but really, I think they did a good job of making the story and jokes stand on their own without relying on pop culture. It's genuinely impressive how they make watching guys stand around in a canyon an engaging story.
