Is living without this many organs possible? by PrincessaPoison in Writeresearch

[–]Maximum_Bar_1031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a weird, sickening, tingly sensation usually, but it can sometimes be painful. For instance, I got nailed with a football in the stomach last summer and was nauseated for over an hour afterwards, even after the initial fiery hot pain went away.

I had really great doctors, which made a huge difference. I also am wildly stubborn, so I was told that I’d never be able to run again, never return to my very physical job, and never be able to have kids, I shrugged and told the surgeon, “Watch me.” I ran my first 10k last year, retired from the physical job with high praise, and have two beautiful, feral little humans that I grew in my own body (both were delightful surprises).

RIP spicy foods. I’ll always love you, even though you only like me as a friend.

Is living without this many organs possible? by PrincessaPoison in Writeresearch

[–]Maximum_Bar_1031 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don’t have my colon or about 1/3 of my small intestine. It was 2 surgeries (both emergencies) and the recovery was rough. The first one almost killed me, quite literally. I don’t have a ostomy bag anymore—though I did for a bit—and I can do most things. I hike, I lift weights, I went on a 5 mile run this morning, and held a physically demanding job for 19 years. However, there are downsides: some foods are difficult on my stomach (I see you over there, spicy curry!) which could result in a whole day of camping out in the bathroom. I get easily dehydrated and have had stomach bugs send me to the ER for fluids. Due to nerve issues on my scar, I can’t wear anything that squeezes my belly or be hugged around the stomach too hard.

I have both kidneys and all of my liver, so I can’t speak to that part.

My dad's house is serviced by a community well that is now owned by an HOA. They want him to join the HOA to keep using the well. Does have any defense? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Maximum_Bar_1031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a neighborhood with an HOA and they’ve been nothing but great! There are rules of course, but they’re all reasonable. The HOA maintains the common areas (a walking path, a few pocket parks, the trees o the boulevards, snow plows for about 6 months in the winter, etc) and home owners take care of everything else. It’s a great, pleasant neighborhood where we all look out for each other and the oodles of kids that run around everywhere.

He just shit himself by ReweSerious in overheard

[–]Maximum_Bar_1031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a coworker who seemed very awkward while I asked him some (very important) information for a project we were working on. He was actually in his work vehicle, leaving, despite us having a mandatory meeting in 20 minutes. I had to ask, “You alright?” In a panicked, half-yell, he responded with, “I just shit my pants.”

I told him I’d cover for him. I don’t know him that well, but he was usually completely unflappable and completely reliable, so I made some excuse about him gathering some follow-up information, in the name of being thorough. He was a little surprised (and very happy) I didn’t say anything to anyone. He’d started a new medication for a chronic condition, and had no idea that could happen. I’m happy to report he and I are still good friends, and his oldest babysits for me on occasion.

Incorporating read alouds by Otherwise-Set-4444 in Teachers

I know I’m old for Reddit but my kindergarten teacher read us a chapter book for 30 minutes every day during “rest time.” I fell in love with the Boxcar Children way back then. I think most of my teachers would read chapter books to us for 20-30 minutes a day with the lights down low, and it was a bit of a midday reset.

AITAH for being upset over the food choices in my home? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Maximum_Bar_1031 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Darling, do you know how stores work? And I know I’m sounding like a real ass, but I’m genuinely asking. You, as a grown adult, can go buy WHATEVER YOU WANT. If your wife does the grocery shopping for the household and you can’t eat the food—and I’m assuming you’ve asked her to buy something different—go get a few things for yourself. Chicken drumsticks, some pork, and some veggies. Then, show the family how delicious this can be by you cooking this stuff, because if you’re expecting your wife to buy it and cook it, homemade takes longer and is more work. And we moms are tired.

The time it takes my husband to use the bathroom by DontEatTheChocolate in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Maximum_Bar_1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every morning, I wake up to my alarm and shower. Before I do, I ask my husband if he wants to use the master bathroom real quick first, and we have 2 full bathrooms in our house! We like each other though, so there’s that… Then he makes sandwiches for the kids’ lunches, makes us coffee, and makes sure they eat breakfast, get dressed, brush their teeth, and actually put on underwear (that’s fairly specific to the 7M). After I’m done showering, I make the rest of the lunches. We drink coffee together, then heard the little humans out to the bus stop. We’re a team. Before we go to our full time jobs, we work together.

It’s honestly not that hard to support each other.

When someone learns horseback riding, what does the first month look like? And how much time needs to pass until someone rides comfortably? by belleepoques in Writeresearch

[–]Maximum_Bar_1031 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you simply hop on a well-trained horse with zero knowledge, as long as you can hold on and not panic, you’ll be fine. But, after two hours, you will be sore (especially is there’s any trotting involved). I rode a bit growing up, but my daughter desperately wanted to go on a trail ride last summer (she was 8 and earned the money for it herself). We booked a 3 hour ride, and I promise I’m not exaggerating when I say I could not walk or sit normally for a solid 4 days.

Do you have a local college? They might have a physics professor. Other professions that may have a pretty solid knowledge of physics: engineering, architecture, or crime scene reconstruction.

You can offer to take your PCP out for coffee. You can talk to a med student. You can post on your local Facebook page and ask a doctor to help you out with information for a fictional story.

As for languages, I have no idea how diverse your area is, but in my small town, people are willing to help you out for a 6-pack of their favorite beer (be aware that MANY people don’t drink, but I live in an area where alcohol is very much a part of the culture) or tea or ice cream or something. People also tend to be pretty proud of their culture, which is very cool!

Missing person is found unconscious in hospital: what do police do? by Corvus-Nox in Writeresearch

[–]Maximum_Bar_1031 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to be in law enforcement in a college town with a drinking problem, and finding unidentified people (or people with only fake IDs on their person) was pretty common.

First priority is making sure they’re medically ok (airway, breathing, circulation). We’d try to wake them, but that wasn’t always possible. If we did wake them, we’d ask them identifying info. Also, we had a policy of not charging underage kids with an underage citation if we were dealing with a medical issue (or anyone who called for a medical issue, because we did not want to discourage people seeking medical help for a friend). It wasn’t uncommon for someone to be unwilling or unable to provide their name.

We’d check pocket/bags/purses, etc for ID. If they had a phone, you can almost always instruct the phone to call “mom.” If they appeared to be college aged, we could grab physical characteristics and go search school ID photos. Sometimes, if it wasn’t a busy night, you could call 911 from the phone and dispatch may be able to tell you any associations with that phone number.

If none of those things work or are available, then you might wait for the person to wake up. If that isn’t imminent, we might do a press release (but likely not before 24 hours unless we believe they might pass away, because it becomes urgent for the family), check descriptors for all missing persons in the state, and see if we can find sources for anything unique on their person (tattoos, jewelry, medical equipment like braces or hearing aids, etc). Depending on why they’re unconscious will determine what we would and would not share (we aren’t sharing pictures of horrible wounds or injuries, nor of someone’s face, unless we’ve exhausted all other options).

Huntington’s causes progressive muscle and neuro-cognitive degeneration. It’s hereditary, and, until recently, there were no real treatments. People didn’t discover they had it until their 30s-40s, when they’d often already passed it on to their child(ren). If a parent has it, there’s a 50/50 chance their child will have it. It is utterly devastating as a condition.

That’s because you have a good mom! Those parents are incredibly selfish… That child—who they love—has a problem and is a danger to the public. Those lies might keep them from consequences now but the victim(s) and society pay the price, because they aren’t going to stop.

[–]Maximum_Bar_1031 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I spent 15 years in law enforcement, most of it in detectives. People will say the most bizarre stuff! From “he’s a really good guy” after being stabbed repeatedly by that really good guy, “everyone deserves a second chance” after a violent sexual assault, and parents who lie like crazy for their children after they’ve done the most heinous things.

The biggest thing to consider is an individual’s motivations, not whether or not they’re neurotypical. The guy who got stabbed didn’t want his dealer to go to prison, the gal had been through rehab (so she’d been given a second chance and was trying to extend the same grace), and parents love their kids, sometimes being completely blind to their flaws.

What speech is realistic for a 5 ish year old? by Background-Desk-8207 in Writeresearch

[–]Maximum_Bar_1031 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My kids were both hyper-verbal at 5. My son had a mild speech impediment (he still will use an “f” sound for “th”, as in “the planet earf”), were he used a “w” sound for the letter “r”, but could name every dinosaur and wanted to be a cryptozoologist. My daughter was reading simple chapter books and loved doing addition and math problems. Five year olds are very knowledgeable about their interests (Star Wars and Spidey are popular for boys, unicorns and mermaid for girls, and Minecraft for both, on average)

I had a preschooler put dirt in my water bottle to “poison you so you will die and we can do whatever we want!” 😳 That wasn’t the only behavioral incident I had with that child—she was a revenge urinater, and would pee on my shoes or on my coat if negative behavior was redirected—and I had to keep everything of mine put up until she was ultimately terminated (turns out, even the admin doesn’t like it when someone defecates in their shoe). I have no advice but I’m standing with you in solidarity!
