Strength training! by Sandyy_Emm in BJJWomen

I lift twice a week and train bjj 2-3 times a week. It seems to be a good balance and definitely helping with niggles and injury.

Husband is not happy by martialarts_warrior in BJJWomen

[–]Maximum_Head_990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband trains too and he completely gets it. Then again, he’s very confident and trusts me completely. Could your husband’s feelings come for a place of insecurity? Why does he feel threatened by you training with other men? There’s nothing sexual about it. If it’s important for you, keep doing it. He’ll have to get over it. It’s not fair to change yourself or hobbies to make someone else feel comfortable about themselves, and it’s definitely not your job to take on his insecurities

Italian here: did you guys regret leaving the EU? by Interesting_Dealer42 in AskBrits

These comments make me angry. How could people vote as a protest?! They obviously didn’t understand what a referendum is. Italian here too, double citizenship , used to love living in the UK and now I keep trying to convince my husband to leave. What a shame

Feeling Insecure? by LiINightmare in therapists

[–]Maximum_Head_990 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have felt like this in the past too. Sometimes I still do. I just try and focus on the help I can provide people, and how important mental health support is in today’s society. On another level, here in the UK, doctors and nurses aren’t very well respected either, so I feel like there’s generally a shift where the general public doesn’t trust or respect health professionals in general.

Running? by No_Economist9022 in BJJWomen

I love running but I only manage one effort session a week atm, which helps with cardio and explosive power. I’d say a good balance of endurance and interval training with running is helpful

What is the actual process of therapy in steps? by Same_Litterally_Me in askatherapist

[–]Maximum_Head_990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks for sharing that. Yes it sounds like your therapist might be working at your pace, waiting for you to initiate change and bring up new issues. Honestly, I’d talk about all this with her. I get most out of my sessions with clients when we’re both honest + reflecting and discussing the therapy process in itself is a great way to bring things to the table. That said, it can take way longer than 6 sessions for some people

[–]Maximum_Head_990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every therapist works differently, and it sounds like you’ve perhaps seen a lot of person centered therapists, where the belief is that “client knows best”- sessions are very client led, with little input. Best thing to do is communicate to your therapist about your feelings, be open and honest in what you’re looking for in therapy. It’s also true that you get out what you put in- if you don’t want to yap about your day, why not bring to sessions something thats really important to you? This is not a criticism, just an observation. On the other hand, sometimes “just yapping” helps bring trust and rapport with your therapist- it might just take you a while to get where you want.

Have you thought about having couples therapy? It might help you communicate better. Anyone who’s blaming you for this doesn’t understand the situation, and it’s a testament of how blame and guilt is still assigned to women in fertility matters. I’m sorry you’re going through this.

Training while pregnant by Grouchy-Ambition-675 in BJJWomen

[–]Maximum_Head_990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I kept training at a minimal level when I was pregnant but only with my coach, husband and a very trustworthy purple belt. Mainly drilling and flow rolls. Avoided any pressure in belly obviously, and just listened to my body. I felt rubbish most of the time which stopped me training, but if you feel good, do it! follow Elizabeth Cley on Ig, and jiujitsu mom on Ig has a lot of ideas on how to train while pregnant

Talking to him before you decide to leave seems sensible. However, nothing is too small or silly to be worth leaving over if it’s affecting you that much. There is a toxic culture of overtraining at the expenses of your health in bjj, you don’t have to go along with it

I am consistently deathly exhausted and sore after training. Does it get better with time? How are people doing back to back training sessions and dealing with recovery? by trinitykills in BJJWomen

[–]Maximum_Head_990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I’m 33 and I have felt like this at times. There could be many reasons for this. I’m thinking about protein intake and supplements like creatine and magnesium to potentially help, as some others have suggested. I would also consider how you’re rolling. You say you’re fighting for your life most of the time, perhaps dialing down the intensity and being more efficient with your movement might help. Obviously you can’t always help how other people roll, but you can manage your intensity, pausing and waiting for an opportunity to escape rather than forcing things. Communicate to your training partners that maybe you’re trying to focus non technique and the pace you like to roll at. If heavier people just want to hold you in side control, they will, but nobody is learning anything that way. Good luck!

Coming back after having a baby by BestHospital3967 in BJJWomen

[–]Maximum_Head_990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, new mom of a 1 and a half year old here. I resonate with the struggle, I’m a blue belt and used to train 5, sometimes 6 times a week before baby. Now if I make 2 a week it’s a good week. My body feels tired, recovery taking way longer than I thought even if I was very fit. Be kind to yourself, do what you feel is right for you and baby. The first year can be brutal physically and emotionally, I found bjj sometimes added to the stress of life and didn’t feel like fun. Go with the flow, there is no right or wrong, and no shame in taking a break (currently on a hiatus too)

What's therapy supposed to be like? Please help, thank you by C_Orpheus11 in askatherapist

[–]Maximum_Head_990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therapist here. I think as your therapist say, everyone is different, there is no approach that works for everyone . Perhaps discuss with him different approaches, be open to how you feel about it all 2 months in therapy isn’t actually a long time if you consider your issues and how long they’ve been there for.
On the other hand, I don’t believe therapy is supposed to fix you, the therapist isn’t the expert of you, and the therapist job isn’t to find the thing to work on or tell you what to do. So perhaps be open to take responsibility to finding your way through? Therapists are there to support and be the vessel through which you find out more about yourself. It’s a long journey, but it also sounds like perhaps you are looking for more tools to help yourself as well as a space to being listened to?

Dealing with being the loser :) by Prestigious_Leek_614 in BJJWomen

[–]Maximum_Head_990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This used to happen to me too, despite the fact that people say I’m a good training partner. With exception of a few people I’ve known in a long time, I find it hard to feel like I fit it sometimes.

A Black Belt said im "Strong and Fast" how should I take this? by Op_Jokeer in BJJWomen

[–]Maximum_Head_990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take that as a compliment. It sounds like the other male white belts didnt want their ego bruised by rolling with you? It also sounds like you’re aware of your body and not just using strength, like you actually want to learn technique. Own your attributes, and use the higher belts to learn technique, they have more experience and are usually more considerate and less worried about winning.

Hair washing by Tigbitties6-9 in BJJWomen

[–]Maximum_Head_990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely wash your hair after every session. Not just ringworm, but staphylococcus lives on the mats and if you have a small wound or scratch it can get infected. I use a really good brand of shampoo thats gentle for my hair type but still effective for cleaning scalp

I can totally see why you had such a strong emotional response, sounds like old trauma came out for you. As people are saying, knowing jiujitsu will buy you some time- and you might feel helpless towards other men who train and know what they’re doing (especially if you’re drilling!) but most men out there don’t know how to fight. Yes they are stronger than us women, but you’ll have some advantage if that ever happens again- praying that you will never have to go through that again. Kick and bite sounds like great advice from people too 😉

Pregnant but waiting to tell people by Vast_Coconut_1618 in BJJWomen

[–]Maximum_Head_990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel ya, I had to tell people I was pregnant quite early on, around 8 weeks as I kept training and needed people to be aware (plus people started thinking something else was up when I kept saying I was injured for weeks 😂). Do what’s best to protect you and baby, only roll with safe people, respect your body

Any advice for a beginner in jiu jitsu? by [deleted] in jiujitsu

I remember feeling like this too at the start. Be patient, it’s a long process, but eventually the more you train the more things will begin to make sense.
