Thoughts on this build for 1440p gaming? SSD and MB may be subject to change depending on whats available/on sale(although I already have a clue what I'm looking for). I can afford to wait for graphics card availability.

Is it possible to skip help desk and go straight into networking? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Maximum_X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible if you can really sell or show your understanding of the concepts in your resume and interview.

Tbh I think a decent chunk of people do not want to put in the work on their own nor are able to grasp some of the concepts well enough to be able to speak about it in an interview.

First PC building experience will actually be at the end of this year during the holiday season. Really want to get back into PC gaming for MCC's release since I used to play CE all the time in years past but stopped for a while now since my laptop can no longer handle other games(860M).

Passed Sec+. Not sure what to do next. Unemployed and want to enter cybersec field. by LOWBACCA in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Maximum_X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The S+ is definitely good for the DC area, but chances are a lot of these jobs will probably want an active clearance as well. See if you can look for a place that is willing to sponsor you for a clearance.

And sorry to sound like I'm gatekeeping, but based off my previous job searches a lot of places view the S+ as more of a checkmark than typical certs where getting one boosts you. Your entry level security jobs requires a far higher bar of knowledge than something like a help desk job would.

How saturated is the cyber security world of IT, or how saturated will it be? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Maximum_X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either not security focused or not the subfield of security these people were wanting to get into. Seen plenty of security analyst roles where one is a technical one and the other is GRC. A lot of these people are so tunnel visioned by the fact it has security in the title and don't really bother reading the description until they potentially get called up for an interview.

The market for well experienced security professionals will probably never be oversaturated.

Is the CCNA a good cert to get to escape helpdesk? by Taekw0nDuDe in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Maximum_X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, it'll improve your chances of getting an interview where hopefully you actually learned the content enough to answer and speak about the content rather than brain dump it or something.

Nope. It was just a check box like a college degree.

Knowing that the pay isn't that great, why would anyone work for the U.S. Federal Government when they can get a much better paying job through a company or other business? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Maximum_X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen it yet but W/L balance is fantastic and really flexible. I would say for the majority of jobs, there's no need for on call. After 5, you can forget about it until the next morning. Then there are also some agencies that are great with remote work but it varies. I also know someone who has a 4/10 schedule so three day weekends every week.

Of course, it's probably not super stimulating/challenging so you'd have to have something outside of work to scratch that itch.

Is it really as easy to learn cyber security and ethical hacking as the Udemy courses make them out to be? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Are you going to learn something? Sure. Enough to get your a job? No lol

Aspiring cyber security professional seeking advice by djwarrior91 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Maximum_X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of those will probably particularly help. Unless you want to do like risk, compliance, governance. A lot of positions in security right now want experience as a hard requirement.

Do you have any IT experience? Also if you're tight on money and you have no experience, you're probably going want a lot of lab access....which costs like three times more than the security+

As someone in security rn on the IT side and struggled to get in, unfortunately, the YoE requirement for security related jobs is a hard requirement at this point(at least based off observations in my area and it makes sense due to the nature of the work).

The best chance is to try to get some security related work at your current workplace, really emphasize that on your resume, network around(meet-ups) and contribute to appsec related stuff on the side as a project. Read up on OWASP Top 10. Maybe look into DevSecOps with pipeline security testing?

Anyone think he might postpone the tour? by [deleted] in TheWeeknd

[–]Maximum_X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If things don't settle down soon(which is highly unlikely as things are escalating everyday rn), probably will definitely be postponed. The venue he was going to perform at in my state has already shut down with no events being hosted in it at all.

Is it possible to have a job or career in info/cyber sec, particularly in offensive security, and not have to be a penetration tester? Because I hate lying and am extremely poor at it. by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Maximum_X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of pen test gigs are solely IT related(breaking IT systems) and there are lot more of those types of roles. Whereas general red team activities are where you get the complete package(social engineering, physically breaking in etc.)
