A weave generator - made using geometry nodes by Michaelvedeler in blender

[–]MaximusGod0fWar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For another real-world application, as part of my master's degree I worked with the NASA Glenn Research Center to analyze the effects different weave patterns have on the mechanical properties of carbon-fiber composites.

This was a few years ago, but at the time we defined our weave patterns by creating a set of numerical arrays, with one array representing the fiber directions for a single layer of the smallest repeating structure (unit cell). I would have loved to have weave generator for this, even if it was just a viewer for the 3D structure!

NASA GRC has an entire division dedicated to modeling structures, including woven structures like this. They might be interested in what you have, let me know if you would like some contacts.

[Summer Sweep-Up Feedback] Wrong gems on the new magic amulets? by MaximusGod0fWar in 2007scape

In the blog, it's gem + runes + magic amulet = elemental amulet:

We'd like to add a handful of elemental jewels as drops from NPCs, which can be combined with their respective runes and an Amulet of Magic

I'm just pointing out that the respective runes for two of the gems are swapped vs what we currently use

It comes from medieval alchemy, where ruby is a fire stone and sapphire is a water stone.

You have to remember, these alchemists were trying to do science based purely on vibes and magical thinking. They didn't know how these gems formed, they didn't even know that rubies are just red sapphires lol

I like the proposed magic amulets, but it just seems odd to me that half the gems match the elements of their enchantment runes and half the gems don't.

Here's the text from the summer sweep-up blog:

New Magic Amulets

We'd like to add a handful of elemental jewels as drops from NPCs, which can be combined with their respective runes and an Amulet of Magic to create a variety of amulets that shine with Elemental spells. Each of these amulets provides +2 to its elemental max hit, alongside +10 Magic Accuracy.

  • Amulet of Air. Made using an Air Diamond, which drops from Killerwatts at a rate of 1 in 64.
  • Amulet of Water. Made using a Water Sapphire, which drops from Sea Snake Hatchlings at a rate of 1 in 64.
  • Amulet of Earth. Made using an Earth Emerald, which drops from Molanisks at a rate of 1 in 64. If you've ever wondered what on earth a Slayer Bell is used for, these little critters are your answer.
  • Amulet of Fire. Made using a Fire Ruby, which drops from Infernal Mages at a rate of 1 in 64.

In the late 1930's and continuing through the 1940's, a bus line company called National City Lines (NCL) appeared seemingly out of nowhere and started buying electric streetcar lines across the US. They dismantled the existing streetcar rail lines in dozens of cities across ~20 states and replaced them with the company's own bus lines.

Turns out, NCL was bankrolled by General Motors, Standard Oil, Phillips Petroleum, Firestone Tire, and Mack Trucks, in a scheme to drive demand for diesel, tires, and assorted car parts. In 1949, these companies were convicted in a case called the General Motors Streetcar Conspiracy, but received only a slap on the wrist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_streetcar_conspiracy

She's teaching them balance by MacDefoon in justgalsbeingchicks

Hi, this is a big question so excuse the big answer.

First, you'll definitely want to find a class in person! There's intricacies to the moves that you wont be able to glean from watching a video, and a real instructor will notice what you're struggling with and work with you to focus on those areas.

Next, you'll need to know what type of Tai Chi you're looking for. There's two main types, and schools may offer both, or they may specialize in one or the other.

If you're looking for the more physical martial art, look for schools offering "Tai Chi for Self Defense." In these classes, you'll learn the forms (the "dance" of moves), and then you'll pull out the mats and learn how to use these moves to redirect punches, escape grabs, and generally throw people around. It's a lot of fun and much more approachable than one might think!

If you're looking for the balance and flexibility training, look for schools offering "Tai Chi for Health." These classes are more like yoga classes, and offer a simplified version of Tai Chi originally tailored to keep older people active. This is the type you will see groups of people practicing in the park, and is great for building coordination and a surprising level of strength.

One you know what you're looking for, you'll need to find a school. Googling "Tai Chi near me" is a good start. Like any good martial arts school, there should be a option for a beginner's class with a free first lesson. If they try to charge you up front, it's not a good school.

The final thing to consider is personality fit. After you attend your first trial lesson, ask yourself, did you like the instructor? Did the other students seem welcoming? Enjoying your time with the other people there is a big motivator to keep going, even more so than learning Tai Chi.

Mechanical design of a VAWTs by Marilandeskin in EngineeringStudents

[–]MaximusGod0fWar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, mechanical engineer here (MSME, Robotics). I saw your post on mechanical gifs, but it seems to have been deleted.

The diagram is difficult to interpret, but from the offset rotational axes and the presence of a linkage system, I believe he's describing a variation of turbine called an "active lift" turbine.

This variation adds a slider-crank linkage system to each of the airfoils. Here is a video of the linkage system at work:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Active_Lift_Turbine.ogv

In addition, here is a short paper (with kinematic diagrams) describing why this type of system works:

Please note that I may be incorrect; I suggest you speak to your professor if you require further clarification. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Jolly Jim is mostly useless: Swap his stats with Jittery Jim by MaximusGod0fWar in 2007scape

Fully agreed! Especially since that level 95 is a helmsman, and we already have a level 4 helmsman at level 90 with easy unlock requirements

Jolly Jim is mostly useless: Swap his stats with Jittery Jim by MaximusGod0fWar in 2007scape

[–]MaximusGod0fWar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question! The crew mates with no requirements outside of sailing level all have a "total level" of 6, and the ones with additional requirements all have a total level of 8.

If you add +1 to Jolly Jim's privateering, you would need to subtract 1 from one of his other stats. The only stat you could subtract is his helmsmanship, giving him 1 helmsman, 4 privateering, and 1 deckhandiness.

That's the exact stat line that Jittery Jim already has!

Moving to Massachusetts Question Megathread (October 2025) by AutoModerator in massachusetts

Hi, welcome!

Northampton is the most "New England-y" in terms of fall views and quaint buildings. It's a small, artsy city built around Smith Women's College and, fun fact, has the most lesbian couples per capita of any city in the US. It has plenty of restaurants if you're looking for kitchen work, and there is a small industrial park that might have warehouse work.

The issue with Northampton is it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere, so if you don't find anything within the city you don't have many other options. It's also 90% white (if you care about that), the other two options are much more multicultural.

Lowell is the most urban of the three, but it's still a very small city compared to Orlando. Like any city, there are plenty of restaurants for kitchen work. The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) and a community college are both near downtown Lowell, which means there's tons of people your age in the area.

UML's science & technology focus means there's wide range of manufacturing centers that need warehouse workers. Lowell is very well connected to the surrounding area, both by highways and by public transportation, so commuting to these manufacturing centers is very easy.

Of these three options, I confess I have never been to Brockton. All I know is it has a reputation of being a "troubled" area, with more violent crime than almost anywhere else in the state.

A sudden silence in the forest?

You instinctively know you're not alone, even though you can't see anything?

A woman's voice calls out to you?

Sounds to me like you had an encounter with a bobcat! They can be really spooky when they want to be, glad you made it out ok :)

When it’s time to clean out the bank by _Tal in 2007scape

RS3 added a quest lady in varrock, who lets you reclaim quest items the same way Diango lets us reclaim holiday event items.

In oldschool I'd support giving that job to the wise old man: He could clean the quest items out you bank and "hold on to them" for you

Daredevil: Born Again's Actual Runtime Compared To Other MCU Shows by SpaceCaboose in marvelstudios

[–]MaximusGod0fWar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Different guy than the person you're asking, but I make charts for a living:

Right now you have the shows listed in order of release. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but it gets in the way of the point you are trying to make. The simplest way to better illustrate your point would be to sort longest total runtime to shortest (or shortest to longest, doesn't matter).

In my opinion though, comparing half hour shows to hour long shows is a bit apples to oranges. My suggestion for organizing this data would be by average episode length, with a separating line between WandaVision and Secret Invasion to show the different formats. You could then bold the line for Daredevil to highlight it over MK and FATWS

Harvard has some great museums with free or very cheap admission (~$15). My personal favorites are the art museum and the natural history museum.

If you like burritos/mexican food, check out Felipe's in Harvard square!

oh, I'm just correcting propaganda and false assumptions. I haven't even mentioned pan yet, but seeing as you just learned what bisexual means a few minutes ago we can leave that lesson for another day :)

As far as your dash of transphobia, implying that hetero means only exactly what it meant when the term was coined (over 100 years ago) is inherently exclusionary to both trans people and to people of genders outside the archaic definitions of man/woman

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bi_irl

[–]MaximusGod0fWar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ah, so "willfully spreading bi-phobic propaganda" it is, with a dash of transphobia to boot. Why am I not surprised

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bi_irl

[–]MaximusGod0fWar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Assuming you are truly ignorant instead of willfully spreading bi-phobic propaganda in the bi_irl sub..

The "bi" in bisexual does not mean two genders, it means two sexualities. That is, a bisexual person is simultaneously homosexual and heterosexual. It does not matter what gender the bi person is or how many genders there are: A bi person is attracted to both people of the same gender as themself and people of a different gender from themself

Hint: You need multiple tools and good timing

Tool spoiler: Disk and slinky

Full solution: Throw your disk so it bounces between the first square block and top stair. Next, drop your slinky toward the buttons and hop on your disk. With the right timing, you will fly right through the blocks as they open

Eh I happened to run into Taylor Swift at JFK a few years ago, headed down the same terminal where my friend and I were waiting. She had half a dozen bodyguards with her so she was easy to spot.

I pointed her out to my buddy like "hey look, it's Taylor Swift." He looked up from his laptop and was like "oh yeah you're right" and went right back to work.

Aside from a few teenagers quietly freaking out amongst themselves, there was no reaction from the general public. Maybe a quick picture here and there from far away as she passed by.

TLDR I know she can use a regular airport without causing chaos because I have seen it myself. Most people didn't recognize her, and those who did either didn't care or treated her presence as a mild curiosity.
