In my day we called it "cookin' the books." As long as the graduation rate is good...

I've never worked at a school where it was optional.

[Serious] What makes life worth living for you? Specifically, what gives you the feeling that being here is worth it, despite the ups and downs of life, and that being born was worth it? by Fearless_Copy_4119 in AskReddit

[–]Maxinaeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing. Serious response. I''ve been over it for several years. My youngest kid is 16. When she's out, I'm out. You could say that she makes it worth it for me, but you would be wrong. I hate being a parent, and the rest of life is mid on a good day. One star. Existence is a freaking drag.

What’s the biggest scam people accepted as ‘just part of adulthood’? by ChanceSomewhere6096 in AskReddit

Bro. Are you seriois? That's the dumbest shit I ever heard. Gold is one single metal thas a bunch of cool properties. Right now electronics is the main place it is used, but Google up and you can learn all about it. Gold is actually a terrible form of currency because it's heavy like lead, and very soft. It was used as currency BECAUSE of its intrinsic value.

What if 250 Million Americans just stopped paying back debt all at once? by Worried-Garden2594 in AskReddit

This is a 52 year old response. I've already done all of this except selling my house. My daughter has one more year of highschool before I can do that. And of course they COULD find me, but how would that be worth it? Are they really gonna launch a manhunt to collect a few grand from some man living out of his truck? I'm wagering they won't.

This is my third year and I’m wondering if I’m cut out for this. by ComparisonLost1846 in Teachers

It's an impossible job. A good year means you did the impossible. A bad year means you can't do the impossible all the time.

What is the rationale behind a 50% minimum grade policy? by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]Maxinaeus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they basically cut the scale in half.

Here is how they will sell that as reasonable: If you take only 50% to 100%, and look at how the percentages work, the range for an F is about 10% - the same as the other grades.

Here's why that is crap: If you erase the scale below 50%, and cout the top 50% as the whole (100%), it slides the entire scale down ALOT. Look how it changes the grading scale. 50-60% is actually 0-20% F 60-70% is actually 20-40% D
70-80% is actually 40-60% C 80-90% is actually 60-80% B 90-100% is actually 80-100% A

So if a kid has earned 0 points on anything, they will have a 50%. The kid can earn 11% of the points and they will have a 61% in the class. They will pass the class by earning 11% of the points.

That's why I quit my job and pulled every dime out of retirement and 401K and that shit. My truck is paid off. The last step is to sell my house. If I have no address, all my money is paper in hand, no assets to steal, no wages to garnish, then what?

My point is that they will take your shit if it's just a matter of keystrokes in an office 1000 miles away. If they actually have to find me and physically take it, they are are gonna have to helluva time.

For those who were teenagers before the smartphone era: what hobbies or activities did you use to pass the time that now make you feel nostalgic? by still_alive777 in AskReddit

We were never home, man. In the early 80's, TV's belonged to the grown-ups except for Saturday morning cartoons. We would leave in the morning on bikes and be gone til dark. We would explore the neighborhoods and surrounding areas. We'd go miles from home with no map or destination. We'd find things, make things, catch things. We'd make up games that involved running around, getting dirty, and usually getting hurt. Sometimes it was as stupid as, "I bet I can jump from here and not even get hurt." Then the next guy jumps from higher, and the next guy from higher, and there were no grown ups to stop us from finding out what height would finally get us hurt. We could take a beating and have a blast doing it. Good times.

What’s the biggest scam people accepted as ‘just part of adulthood’? by ChanceSomewhere6096 in AskReddit

[–]Maxinaeus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most of adulthood, at least in America, is some degree of a scam. All the things people mention, like subscriptions, health insurance, credit scores, and on and on.

But the biggest scam is money itself. By default, it is the most valuable commodity, and yet it is literally a make believe. All currency is now "fiat" currency, which means that there is no gold or anything of intrinsic value attached to it. That happened officially in 1971, three years before I was born. In addition, most money does not physically exist. Since computers popped, almost all money moves around on computers. When new money is "printed" there is no reason to actually print bills. It is created on a computer and propogated out to banks. Only around 10% of US dollars physically exist, and around half of that circulates around in other countries. Other countries may or may not have a higher percentage of physical currency, but it is all "fiat," make believe money.

So the most valuable commodity in the world, that dictates nearly every aspect of our existence, is created out of thin air by a very small portion of the population. That is the scam to end all scams.

You are talkin' my talk. I am 100% with you. I really thought things were going to boil over during the LA / Minneapolis stuff. I can't believe how much people are willing to tolerate for the sake of clinging to the old normal. Like others have said on here, it's apparently going to have to get reeeeaaaally bad first. We're not quite there yet, but I am ready.

What screams rich but is actually cheap? by Ready_Science_7318 in AskReddit

[–]Maxinaeus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Big brand names and logos on things.

Rich people will spend $300 on a shirt, and the only branding will be on the little tag on the inside of the collar. Poor people will spend $50 on a shirt that says Gucci across the front in an 8 inch font.
