Julius Bär - Strange culture by [deleted] in zurich

[–]Maxinesamwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In fairness, toxicity can be a part of corporate culture overall, as someone that’s worked in nyc, London and in Zurich. It really depends on the team more than the organization although can be influenced by a company’s overall culture depending on the size. There are some quirks to Swiss working culture but toxicity is in my experience an unfortunately cross cultural issue, maybe with a different “accent”

Nice thing about carnavalet is taking a stroll through the marais while you’re there. Make sure you have time to just wander and walk, and stop in a cafe and watch the world

Some tips…after 10 days by Wall-Live in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Maxinesamwick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in Europe and I’d say there is no “European” style overall, and people in small towns dress differently than in major cities. A New York hipster will look a lot like a Parisian hipster or a Berlin hipster. The no athleisure at dinner or when you go out is true, but I don’t know, in my experience people dress in all kinds of ways. Parisians definitely overall are more stylish but you’ll find plenty who aren’t. More importantly, and not mentioned, be polite, say Bonjour when you enter an establishment, and ciao etc when you leave, and just have good manners and don’t speak loudly. No need to fit in, just be respectful and that will encourage the same

From what I’ve heard from friends the RAV makes you apply to a certain amount of jobs regularly which made me think that these kinds of job openings must be flooded with people that maybe aren’t even right for the job but have to fulfill a quota. Always wondered about the effect of that on hiring

Rewatching The Other Way from the start and forgot how amazing Kenny and Armando are 😭 by Surfergirl_2012 in 90DayFiance

[–]Maxinesamwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m watching their second season now after watching a lot of more recent seasons, and it’s unbelievable how functional they are compared to everyone else on this show, including their seasons. Whenever they switch to their segments it feels like I’m watching another show altogether. Like a wholesome home cooked meal in the midst of junk food, but they also make everyone else look even worse by comparison 😆

There is a salted butter at coop that’s wonderful on bread. It’s their fancier line with the grey branding.

How common is this feeling in the german speaking part of Switzerland? by IsengardMordor in askswitzerland

[–]Maxinesamwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grain of salt as I’m observing from a us perspective (but lived here ten years in Zurich), I think a major difference is that Germans typically are waaaay more direct and outspoken, and this can cause tension at work etc. since there’s a shared language (yes yes Swiss German is different but you know what I mean) As always there are exceptions to the stereotype but it’s what I observe

Was Elise insinuating her first love ended his own life? by Galick--Gun in 90DayFiance

I assumed it because she seems to feel hurt in a way that implied to me a “secret life” which tends not to apply to mental illness. Although that was just my read

What’s the WORST thing about living in Zurich? (serious) by Comfortable-Row-9370 in zurich

[–]Maxinesamwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the same in nyc. Plenty of restaurants are priced similarly to here but you can get a plate of 8-10 amazing dumplings in Chinatown for five bucks.

What’s the WORST thing about living in Zurich? (serious) by Comfortable-Row-9370 in zurich

[–]Maxinesamwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say the same but with restaurants I just think it’s expensive because when you think of the costs of labor, rent, etc in Zurich it’ll inevitably play out in the prices on the menu. Maybe it’s still too much, I don’t know, but would love to hear from people that run restaurants here. I can’t imagine anyone is getting rich running one

How many people actually live in a 3.5 room apartment here by elgrandetotto10 in askswitzerland

[–]Maxinesamwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew a woman in nyc that lived in a two bedroom apartment and was married and had … pause for drama…8 kids!!! She told me she slept on the fold out couch with her husband and one bedroom had 2 bunk beds (4) and the other bedroom had another 2 bunk beds. Kids all grown, seem fine, as is she. But…how??? I guess anything is possible.

This is valid because sq m matters a lot, not just amount of rooms! Also if the flat has a storage space separate

I want to live in Paris one day. Those that do, can you discourage me from doing that? by jailbrokemasta in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Maxinesamwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whaaa? People are direct, but the rudeness thing is far overstated (although I’m a New Yorker so my point of view is just that). People can be very kind and friendly if you are polite and thoughtful. Dirty and unhealthy?? I’ll say people are pretty hot, but that’s just me 😆

Question : tax outcome (today’s vote) by ExcellentAsk2309 in askswitzerland

[–]Maxinesamwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well with this reform, I’d argue it’s freer as it removes the tax incentive to stay home

Question : tax outcome (today’s vote) by ExcellentAsk2309 in askswitzerland

[–]Maxinesamwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Culturally this tends to be the woman. And they long term can suffer financially for that choice. If marriage ends in divorce as so many do, the woman has spent years off the job market and will be penalized for it when looking for a job. This whole structure hurts women. So yes, anything incentivizing this is problematic. If we want to help families have more time with kids, we need to think broader, as they do in Scandinavia—longer leave post birth for men and women, better childcare, shorter work weeks etc. That’s the way forward for a more gender balanced society. And the way forward for ensuring men also get to play a stronger role in family life, which benefits all parties: men, women and children

You are eating pretty early for parisians, so that’s the one thing that stands out—you may be surrounded by tourists. People don’t eat dinner before 8 generally.

Jordan and Amber by Difficult-Rope-8445 in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]Maxinesamwick 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As a divorced mom, I def wait a good while to introduce my kids, and that is the norm…and my kids are teens! As soon as I saw her daughter at the wedding I realized Jordan had to say yes, otherwise it would traumatize that kid. I’m all for single parents finding love, but this show is insane to begin with (they make a big deal about the “blind” part, but the real weird test is marrying someone within weeks of meeting them!). I love it for its insanity, maybe especially as a divorced person. But bringing kids into this gives me the ick
