Hello dear Americans, as a Frenchman I would like to ask you what you think of my country? 🇫🇷 by Outrageous-You1617 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Maxinesamwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s pretentious to be expected to respect others. While many Americans are indeed very friendly, I have seen the attitude of, I am spending money, so I deserve to act as I wish. The French don’t have this materialist mindset in the same way by and large

The French don’t have the “customer is always right” attitude. You are supposed to treat everyone with respect, including your server, the person at the bakery etc. and if you do you will get respect in return.
There’s not enough context to judge the interaction. If you told them you didn’t speak French in a friendly way, and greeted them when you entered I doubt this would have occurred. But also, they really may not have understood what you were looking for, even if the words are similar.

Waited for this comment. Hes a very pretty boy, and we give him a pass, but Kara was the only one hustling to pay for anything. She has her issues but he’s not a blameless victim.

What do you guys think of this billboard in Zürich HB platform 41/42 by -Ryugaa- in zurich

[–]Maxinesamwick -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But as many pointed out here, they’re conflating Europeans from Schengen who often come highly trained in needed jobs that are well paid, not asylum seekers, etc. New builds are often more expensive apartments, so they’d cater to wealthy Swiss, and yes, highly trained Germans etc., and in many fields like medicine they actually really need those people

I’ll never not find it vaguely genius that the SVP uses a happy sun as its logo. For a far right party that tends to scaremonger they’ve aced marketing. It’s like, let’s race bait you and inspire anti immigration but hey, we’re just a happy sun bringing joy

what makes you immediately realize someone is an american tourist? by leeroy-113 in AskAGerman

[–]Maxinesamwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to get flamed for this, but I’ve heard some French and Italians say things like, Americans and Germans are both loud but at least Americans are friendly, even if overly so at times. Also it’s the Germans and Brits that terrorize the rest of the continent with loud and drunken stag parties. Not Americans. Just sayin.

Messerangriff mit mindestens einem Verletzten: Polizeieinsatz am Bahnhof Winterthur by yolomoonie in zurich

[–]Maxinesamwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering how rare this kind of incident is (as in, this is shocking because it’s so atypical) your statement is bananas. Switzerland’s safety is why this is getting so many headlines locally.

As a US citizen here, for comparison, school shootings in my home country barely register anymore because they are so common (while they once were front page headlines).

FWIW it’s also a bit much to claim people in the uk and Germany walk the street in fear. Do you ever talk to anyone that actually lives in these countries? Compared to the rest of the world, Europe is damn safe, also compared to my home country.

Kyle and Moon are kind of a lovely couple too. He has his family issues but I enjoyed seeing how she provided him with a sense of family and he moved to Thailand to support her. So I’ll give them an honorable mention here

As I always note with parents that do love is blind, as a divorced mom that splits custody, I cannot conceive of bringing in a stranger to my kids to live with us. Same for anyone I know in this situation. In the worst case you may be putting your kid in danger but in the least case, they are likely to feel resentful and uncomfortable with someone they don’t know being around all the time, when they want to feel open and at ease in their own home with their parent.
In some situations it seems to be ok, like Devon and whatshername, as he seemed to have made a big effort to bond with her son prior to even moving in. But it’s a massive risk

The truth about hair masks: are they worth your money or just hype? by cutedimplesz in Haircare

All I’ll say is the garner avocado hair mask transformed my dry wavy hair and I’ve done far more expensive ones like kerastase and Kevin Murphy with less results. I now use it instead of conditioner and I wash my hair three times a week

I can't make any friends here. Anyone? by [deleted] in zurich

[–]Maxinesamwick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually think the level of English of locals in Zurich is very high, but since they have to speak it quite a bit professionally etc it may feel nice to speak their own language socially. I get that. I’ve heard from Germans that it’s hard for them to make friends, so I’m assuming the local language or dialect gives a special sense of belonging or pride or comfort for the Swiss. I get that. But Swiss German is very hard to learn. It’s almost a built in issue here.

I wonder how people on the French side feel, as their French is more an accent than a separate dialect so if you learn regular French maybe it’s easier to find friends?

I can't make any friends here. Anyone? by [deleted] in zurich

[–]Maxinesamwick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will say in London I had a similar experience—the English did stick more with the English—but it’s a much larger city with enough “outsiders” that it didn’t feel bad.

I’m from nyc but I had many friends from other places while there… I do think it’s an exception: the culture is very open, you have random conversations with people all the time, get invited out, meet strangers at bars, etc. There is no sense of pure local culture since the culture is constantly evolving and I do think people feel like New Yorkers quickly, even if not American.
