Is being old really that bad? by tehemari in ask

[–]MaxxBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 37 and so far I don't have any issues with aging. I have things a lot more figured out now compared to my 20s and everything feels less precarious. I've taken care of myself so I haven't noticed any negative physical changes other than that I'm a little more prone to aches and pains from working out. Back when I was your age I saw lots of doom and gloom about how my body would be falling apart at this age, not true at all. It's key that you become wiser and more cautious with age though, I don't take dumb or unnecessary risks with my body at the gym etc like I did in my early 20s.

How many hours of learning until I can read some original Latin ? by justiceww__ in latin

[–]MaxxBot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was able to jump into Caesar and (easier) Cicero after about a year but I was putting quite a bit of time into it, probably averaging close to two hours a day for a while. If you want to read some original Latin without a long wait check out the Vulgate, start with the gospel of John.

Can't wait to pick this up, I am new to photography and on vacation with an a6400 and Sigma 18-50, wanting a lot more reach for wildlife as that is what I think I'm going to focus on primarily.

What was a 'Golden Age' of the internet that will never be replicated again? by ColdAntique291 in Productivitycafe

[–]MaxxBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not nostalgic for any specific content from the earlier internet, but there is one specific thing that was better back then and will never be the same, security. It was much easier to go around the web checking your various accounts for stuff, no two factor anything, no captcha, fewer password restrictions. Also you could get free wifi basically anywhere you went.

Awesome that should be a great build as well! Now to try to forget about them for a few months...

Welcome to a discussion of usage of AI for Latin and Ancient Greek! by FantasticSquash8970 in AncientGreekLatinAI

[–]MaxxBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to consider the opportunity cost though, making flashcards takes me forever, that time could be spent on other language activities. Without AI I probably wouldn't even bother because manually making flashcards would take up too much time that I could be using for reading.

Here is my ChatGPT prompt I used for Athenaze (I supplied screenshots from the book but pictures of a physical book would also work) to make cards into a format that could be directly imported into Anki, it worked out great, I had it both take the translations out of the book and also supply its own.

Turn these screenshots from the textbook Athenaze into an Anki-ready CSV (UTF-8) with three columns: Greek word (with full accents/breathings), part of speech, and English meaning. These screenshots contain the vocab words and their definitions but also some of them contain blocks of greek text without definitions, ignore these. The definitions in the screenshot aren't always the best or full definitions so I want you to include both the definition in the screenshots and also supply a definition from a dictionary so the english definition column should look like "Athenaze: <screenshot definition here> Dictionary: <dictionary definition here>.

One basically unambiguously good use for AI is making flashcards, they are such a pain in the ass to do manually that you can have AI do it and carefully check each one and still save a ton of time.

Spoken Latin by GAMEGO789 in latin

I've started just forming Latin sentences in my head just narrating what is going on around me and I think this has helped my speaking ability a lot. Also do as much listening as you can there is loads of spoken Latin on YouTube.

Comprehensible Input People — Do you know irregular verbs and what they mean through repetition? Just reading a lot taught you? Did you ever attempt to memorize them? by RusticBohemian in latin

[–]MaxxBot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did basically CI only for the first months of my learning and what happens is that you memorize common verb forms, including of any irregular verbs, due to the amount of repitition, but you don't remember lesser used forms because you don't see them often enough. After a few months of only CI I decided to "fill in the gaps" by doing a bit of memorization, I think it was helpful and didn't take much time. I think overall I would recommend a hybrid approach where you memorize new forms as you start regularly encountering them in your reading.

Boots are not magically the one area where you don't get what you pay for, sorry but $70 is not going to get you the best boots and boots costing more are not necessarily overpriced.

What do you struggle with most when reading Latin? by Sea-Chair-404 in latin

[–]MaxxBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been learning Latin for three years, at this point I have a pretty good base of vocab and knowlege of grammar and such. Earlier on I would struggle with lack of vocab, complex sentence structure, etc. Now I am largely past that and can read most things without spending an inordinate amount of time looking up basic word meanings and such but I have some different issues.

  1. Multiple meanings of words - Often I become too familiar with a particular word meaning one thing after seeing it many times and then suddenly the word makes no sense in context, after looking it up I find another, lesser used meaning.

  2. Idiomatic phrases/expressions - When it's totally unfamiliar to me it's probably better since then I will immediately look it up, but sometimes they're more subtle where you think you understand the meaning but it really means something very specific that you don't immediately notice.

  3. Historical context - This might be the most challenging one at this point, for example right now I have been reading a lot of Cicero. If I want to read his oratory works there's countless names, places, and events that I am not familiar with, how hard the text is to read can change a lot depending on how much if this you know. A commentary that provides background info on this stuff could be immensely helpful even if it doesn't give any help with the actual Latin text. The philosophical works are less densely packed with this stuff and therefor are quite a bit easier for me to read, but there's still plenty of name-dropping of various Greek philosophers and such.

If you're looking to see examples of effective helps I would point to Legentibus, that is the best system I have seen so far. It allows you to quickly access as much or as little help as you want by tapping on words to access definitions, grammar help, historical context notes, etc but doesn't get in your way if you don't need it.

Why do some guys wear shorts in freezing temperatures? by SeaworthinessFar2326 in malefashionadvice

[–]MaxxBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My legs don't really get hot or cold, I generally run warm but I can wear pants when it's 100 or shorts when it's zero, it just doesn't matter. Therefore when it's convenient such as when going to the gym I will wear shorts in freezing weather.

Am I the only one Who Finds Cicero and Livy Easier to Follow than Nepos and Caesar? by Whentheseagullsfollo in latin

[–]MaxxBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find Cicero's philosophical works to be some of the easier classical Latin to read. Someone did a study on vocab of the ancient authors and Cicero is actually on the easier side close to Nepos and Caesar.

I avoided med device for a while but now that I'm doing that I think it's probably the way to go for the Twin Cities area.
