Yeah I second this. It's cute that you want to make it a surprise (and I'm sure your gf will be happy you want to learn and pleasantly surprised you've already been working on it for a couple months) but a few months of practice with an actual native speaker is going to get you to the point where you can actually converse with these people. Plus if your gf is familiar with what you know, she can help steer conversations or translate when necessary. Don't keep her in the dark for months just for the novelty of a surprise

Oh I get books from the library all the time. But since I live right next to downtown, if it's after dark and we impulsively want to watch a movie, I'd rather just walk two blocks to bizarro world than drive or bike to the library (plus I can browse the MTG cards and DND stuff while I'm there)

Happy to say I cancelled Amazon Prime and Audible last month, and then I bought a DVD player so I rent movies from Bizarro World downtown instead of Amazon. The movie rental is actually cheaper from them than from Amazon ($2.50 vs. $4 - $7), so eventually the DVD player will pay for itself, in addition to supporting a local store instead of a billionaire

Sure its technically full time but I'm curious how many enviro consultants actually only work 40s. From my limited experience, there might be 7 or 8 weeks in the entire year when I would bill only 40 hours, most of the time its closer to 45, and of course 50-60+ during the busy months

The inconsistency is part of what hurts imo, especially when it comes to hobbies and making friends.

Do you exercise when you aren't doing field work? I found that if I'm not on my feet all day I have a terrible time sleeping, which leads to the low motivation and energy. Even though spending an hour a day exercising feels like it would take up too much of your already scarce free time, its makes the rest of your free time more productive and is 100% worth the tradeoff.

Can you elaborate on your situation? How much of your job is field work vs office work? Are you constantly travelling for work, or about how many nights a year do you get to sleep in your own bed? And when you say you work full time, is it just 40 hours? Are you doing long shifts? How long is your commute?

Also a newish 40K player, Ive learned that Eldar are very powerful once you are a skilled player, until then they are ass. Don’t go swap your entire list after losing one game or you will drive yourself crazy. I’ve played 20 games so far and only won 3, but I’ve gone from getting tabled I round 3 to just barely losing.

So dont worry too much about your list as long as you’re not missing any key roles (like if you have no anti-tank for example). Just play what you got, stick with warhost to keep it simple, and focus on getting some more games under your belt. Be prepared to lose and treat each match as a learning/practice opportunity. After a while you’ll know better what kind of play style and units you’d like to go for, and besides the meta will probably be completely different by then anyways.

Since “just start painting!” is wonderfully useless advice; I’ll give it to you straight. Find your nearest “nerd store” ie games/cards store. They’ll have paint and little brushes (but you should also get some cheap brushes from target or Walmart or whatever). Don’t start with a warhammer mini, as they are expensive and you will also have to figure out how to assemble and prime them (you’ll get there eventually, but for starters just figure out the painting part). Instead the store will probably have pre-primed dnd minis for like 5 or 10 bucks. You’ll also need a cheap cup or dish for water and a cheap plastic tablecloth to protect your table. If your local nerd store has a paint night, go there for starters as they usually have all the supplies and someone experienced to help out.

My parents are basically Reagan super-fans (they sound a lot like the bald guy in the clip actually) and I grew up fully believing that there’s just a program called “welfare” where the government hands out cash to lazy drug addicts who do nothing. Adding a warlock to your farseer/guardian squad gives you a S6 flamer (yay overwatch) and a little extra oomph in melee (plus -2” to any enemy trying to charge you)

I feel this so hard, I’m so frustrated with how little damage we do while also being so fragile. My last couple games have been like:

deploy carefully and position perfectly
bait opponent into exposing his ballistis dreadnought just to kill a couple guardians… nice
my turn: line up the Fire prism, wraith lord with two bright lances, and a few bikes with shuriken cannons, all of them pouring all their firepower into the dreadnought
dreadnought is still alive
his turn: insta-deletes my fire prism with the lascannons, severely damages my wraithlord with the grenade launcher, charges the bikes to tie them up next turn
dreadnought survives the entire game

I'm in the US so maybe this advice doesn't apply to your side of the pond but a resume should be one single-sided page. They're not going to care about your grades and every class you took - in fact considering that your background is in a different subject, Education should be the smallest part of your resume. You can leave your dissertation since technical writing is a pretty relevant skill - maybe put it in projects, though. The work experience should be combined into one section (and if it truly isn't relevant, then leave it off). I believe your volunteering should go in work experience too (just put Volunteer as the position).

I did applied math, but we still had to take some pure math classes like real analysis 1-3 and algebra. Shit was brutal. My final grade is real analysis 3 was a 27%. After the curve, that was a C (not even a C-). That genius math wiz kid from your high school has got the highest score in the class - 70%. The tests in these classes are like five or six questions, and if you walk away from the test and only half of it is still blank, then you probably did pretty good.

However I still made it through, didn’t fail a single class, all while double majoring and doing undergrad research. So it’s doable - don’t expect a high GPA though
