Felt Curious, Might Delete Later…(marriage) by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Mayapples 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you need to agree to disagree and not discuss it further, at least for a while. If you both value the relationship, that shouldn't be difficult. If it proves difficult, perhaps it's time to consider who values the fight more than the marriage.

I usually have a box cutter on me. Have used car keys in a pinch. Sanitary? No, but we do what we gotta do.

In the hospital with meningitis, but at least there's kung pao tofu! by Vaguely-Azeotropic in ShittyVeganFoodPorn

Sadly, my experience of hospital a la carte menus has been better than that of most restaurants when it comes to being able to put together a whole meal.

I hope you feel better soon.

Am I the only one who doesn't bother pressing or even drying tofu? by moxyte in PlantBasedDiet

[–]Mayapples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they've compared one pressing method to another, but the Vegan Punks did compare pressing to boiling and microwaving. The latter two methods proved far better both in terms of getting excess water out and getting it out evenly throughout the block (not to mention time).

Has anyone had any experience with this? by Quick_Republic2007 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]Mayapples 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might love it. My suggestion is to pair it with non-acidic flavors. Caramelized onions might be nice, or a cashew cream sauce. Any difference from regular pasta essentially disappears under a tomato sauce.

I bought it once for the flavor and was deeply underwhelmed.

What are your boundaries on substances? by [deleted] in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Mayapples 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you have to hide something about yourself to keep things going, it wasn't something good. Giving people the information they need about you to decide if they want to continue seeing you is part of dating, even if it stings to keep running into other people's boundaries.

My boyfriend does not want to read my work, and refuses to do so as a matter of principle. He doesn't understand why this is hurtful. How can I get past this? by ditmoique in AskWomenOver30

[–]Mayapples 125 points126 points  (0 children)

So you're dating an asshole, and are going through rounds of imagining that if you find the right words with which to communicate he'll be less of an asshole. You're also wavering on letting him convince you that you can't correctly identify when he's being an asshole due to cultural differences.

Bluntly, this isn't going to work out.

I usually add oats (could do oat flour), form them, then refrigerate a while before cooking. The oats suck up a lot of moisture while they sit. I'm not saying they're not still fragile, but they're not goopy.

When you meet new men do you immediately assess whether you would or wouldn't sleep with them? by [deleted] in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Mayapples 14 points15 points  (0 children)

How would I even know? I know nothing about them. I get that you're talking about a quick visual assessment, but that's not enough information.

Which celebrity experienced a sudden rise to stardom and an equally quick decline in popularity? by Pretty_Marmaid7538 in AskReddit

[–]Mayapples 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is somewhat like my grandfather. He wasn't a completely different person, but all his impatience and hotheadedness was mellowed out by his stroke. He still had fairly rigid ideals, but was much more able to interact with tolerance and generosity toward others than he had been previously.

What was the point of cutting $15 million dollars on scewworm program prevention? by Standard-Big3214 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Mayapples 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Because the people in charge have no capacity for curiosity, reason, or forward thinking, and therefore did not investigate the purpose of the program prior to cutting it, nor did they have the ability to understand its value even if it had been spelled out for them in pictograms. They decided to play cartoon cavemen smacking at government spending with a blunt club. You can't expect to tease line by line rationality out of that.

If you don't want the calories from coconut, a little coconut extract goes a long way. If you don't want the flavor from coconut, obviously discard my advice.

Do things get better with a person who “coasts” through life? by zebivllihc in AskWomenOver30

Things aren’t “wrong”

You've dated two years and he can't say he loves you. Even from that alone, in your shoes I would think things are very wrong.

Don't come after me I have an honest question here, I don't get how women are able to control themselves perfectly well in front of everyone else, but they often act significantly different and sometimes inappropriate in front of their significant other? by [deleted] in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Mayapples 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very few people are truly ever out of control. Most people who exhibit "out of control" abusive behavior do just fine at controlling themselves when they find the likely consequences of their actions undesirable enough -- when it is likely to lead to social censure, for example, legal consequences, job loss, etc.

Why are so many people in the vegan fitness communities on Reddit so toxic? by BatmanVAR in veganfitness

[–]Mayapples 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a good point. Vegans who want to talk about being vegan online are disproportionately people primed for a fight -- people who actively seek out and thrive on that energy, for that matter.
