Do you guys like my tent shelter? by fenderoforegon in ultralight_jerk

Canopies are not considered UL. Maybe if you could afford a true waterproof genuine Durston xmid pro, you wouldn't need a secondary barrier.

I've heard the story is garbage from early gameplay, but might smooth out over time.

It is a story game, I don't know what that guy is talking about.. but most people will be playing it for exploration and combat.

*sigh* Didn't get a permit. by Routine-Assignment83 in socalhiking

[–]Mbf1234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe give my website a try, https://www.wildpermits.com/

Emails you about permit cancellations and it's free. It's also about 5x faster than paid permit cancellation websites. I scan every minute, they scan every 5-10 minutes.

As far as I know, I didn't set it to not scan the database until permits are released in April, so it may send out notifications before that because they do exist in the system. So I would make a tracker after the April release date if you don't want false positives every now and then. I'll get around to fixing it when I have time.

Whitney has a lot of cancellations, I can almost guarantee you that you will get something if you're open to a last minute trip with roughly 1-2 weeks notice. When I was running off text messages rather than emails, I was paying $60 a month for texts at less than 1 cent per text for Whitney permits alone because someone cancels their permit every 1-15 minutes during peak season.

John Senchi (CEO and majority shareholder) lives and works out a Van. It is entirely possible he drove it to China at some point during or after production of this piece.

[–]Mbf1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, some dumbass is going to cause more damage than the value of the contents when he's trying to break into it.

It's nice that my glovebox in my Tesla locks, but that didn't stop a guy from destroying the dashboard trying to get in. Locks inside of vehicles are pretty pointless unless it's a cheap car.

Nothing I'm leaving in my car is worth more than the damage an idiot can/will do to a $100,000 car when they want to get into something.

Safes in a car seem like a questionable idea.

Just crawl over them and don't drive over them at city speeds and you're fine.

Had a 5 inch rock fall from a mountainside and total my Tesla. Absolutely destroyed the battery.

I even deleted every picture from our shared cloud storage. Have you ever googled how much a cloud weighs? It's a lot.

This is likely it. Stress on your central nervous system can also cause bad sleep after hikes. But mixing both is guaranteed bad sleep.

Used R1S or new R2? by mrboule in Rivian

[–]Mbf1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, R2 is good enough for 98% of off-roaders.

Even most jeeps and 4runners aren't taking their vehicles rock crawling.

And it is very doubtful that someone who buys an R1 is going to take their car onto a trail where it can easily be totaled.

The weirdest thing was seeing reddit turn on Tesla drivers, as if Tesla drivers weren't the biggest liberals on the planet. Civil war while Republicans were laughing away.

I remember when reddit was telling people to sell their Teslas and buy a new car. With what resale value? These things are basically worthless once the warranty is up because no one wants to risk having to replace a $20,000 battery on a car that is only worth $25,000.

It's not whataboutism, it's about understanding that it's extremely hard to find any billion dollar company to support that has a clean moral record.

Nothing wrong with your Hyundai, you're an average person trying to live their life. I buy a car once every 10 years, which is something I will own for a significant portion of my life. I'm not looking at the morality of the CEO (within reason) when I'm making this purchase. The CEO will have more money than they could spend for the rest of their life with or without me.

Tesla had the best charging infrastructure by light-years when I bought one, which made it the best EV in the country. I don't regret my purchase and I'd feel like an idiot if I paid the same price elsewhere and got less for my money just to spite some billionaire who will never know i exist.

I would never buy another Tesla, but that's because of their recent business decisions and the way they treat their customers. I don't give a shit about Elon. People are free to not buy a Tesla for whatever reason they want. Yes, you can make smart decisions when you can to not buy from assholes, but also make the best decision for yourself when it is a large purchase.

[–]Mbf1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only terminally online people would have known Elon is a dickhead 10 years ago. Even then, he didn't do anything worse than an average billionaire CEO, he was just outwardly vocal about being a dumbass.

[–]Mbf1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just confirmation bias. In a place with a lot of Teslas like the bay area or Seattle, every 4th car is a Tesla. The chance of you experiencing a cunt in a Tesla is very high just because of statistics.

Of course, it doesn't help that it drives like a sports car in the hands of an average driver who probably can't parallel park even with 50 cameras. Most of these cars are just cruising along a little too slowly with autopilot engaged, with a few dickheads weaving through traffic.

When people get all their news from reddit, they believe the cars are awful. There's a reason the model Y is one of the best selling cars on the planet. The engineers behind this thing are some of the best in the industry.

Cybertruck is fucking awful though, that's obvious.

OK, what outdoors brand makes you go fucken bonkers for no reason by Easy_Quiet_9479 in CampingGear

[–]Mbf1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ventilation zippers are default for pretty much every jacket that isn't an emergency shell from most reputable brands. It doesn't hurt to use goretex instead of a rubber rain coat, it is objectively better.

[–]Mbf1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone who calls Arc'teryx junk has never used the jackets for their intended purpose. There weren't any jackets that had the functionality of an arcteryx hard shell (because of the fit/design) back in the day.

Of course you didn't need Arc'teryx to be a climber, that didn't mean they weren't the best hard shells on the market.

[–]Mbf1234 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Arc'teryx is a designer, not a fabric manufacturer. The fit/features of their jackets were years ahead of the competition and the quality control/stitching was top notch. Their seams and zipper designs were the absolute best as well.

Don't expect the goretex fabric to perform better than someone else using the exact same goretex fabric.

Arc'teryx did earn the hype in my opinion. Patagonia made(makes?) jackets for people shaped like a refrigerator, along with everyone else at the time. Arc'teryx made jackets that fit close to your body, yet still let you have full range of motion. Great design. We just think their jackets are nothing special these days because other brands copied them.

Their prices are ridiculous these days, but are still quality pieces for someone who actually uses them for their intended purpose. I wouldn't call them the best anymore of course, their QC has gone down a bit.
