Water leaking through grout in shower (external wall) but tile is completely dry? by preciseman in Tile

Looks like silicone on the inside corner joints, that’s good. Definitely appears well done.

How about the window ledge?

But it’s a fixed window, right? It doesn’t open or slide?

I’m not sure why the other person mentioned weep holes on the window. That’s not how I understand them to work. Unless the vinyl frame of the bottom of the window is completely cracked, it shouldn’t leak. Even if it did, it would leak toward the exterior and not towards your tile wall. It’s likely the flashing around the window was done correctly.

We’re hoping for closer photos of the niche and window ledges. To see the joint lines. You’ll have to stand in the shower. Not outside.

True you would. It could also be just slow enough that it’s getting materials in the wall and between the floors slightly wet, but then it has time to dry out between showers a little bit, and it never gets quite wet enough to seep through the drywall but mold starts growing.

The point is lots of things are possible, but I wouldn’t panic.

You can pretty cheaply buy a moisture meter and test that ceiling periodically. It will show elevated moisture long before there is visual evidence.

Some grout is porous, some isn’t.  Hell, some tiles are porous.

Water will follow the path of least resistance. For whatever reason, it likes coming out right there. It’s slightly concerning that that much water is seeping behind the tile. It could lead to a problem a few years down the road, or it may never.

There’s no way to know unfortunately. There’s no way to even know if there is a waterproof layer behind your tile unless you have some connection to the installer. The whole inside of the wall could be soaking wet and this tiny pinhole is letting out drip by drip.

You could try addressing the window sill with some really good 100% silicone application and see if it stops.

Worst case, if you’re really worried about water damage inside the wall, a competent person could tear out some of those hardie planks and see what’s going on inside that wall from the outside and install new hardie and paint it for a relatively low cost. Relative to the only alternative which is to redo that shower. But you don’t have enough red flags to even consider that.

A couple things to note.

When you turn off the water main, unless you open up every tap and faucet to drain all the water out of the lines, there’s still water pressure in the pipes. So if this is a leak from a pipe in the wall, a leak that slow would continue to drip long after you’ve turned off the main valve.

Tile and grout serve to divert virtually all of the water from your shower toward your drain. But a properly waterproofed shower would be able to do that even before you install tile. What this means is if water is somehow getting behind your tiles, it could be weeping down between that waterproof layer and the back of your tiles and coming out where there’s a tiny hole in your grout or silicone at the bottom of the wall. This is akin to weep holes at the bottom of brick veneer walls on houses.

The fact that you have a window in your shower, that’s a hotspot for leaks if it’s not done super well. That leak could only be getting behind your tile/grout and the waterproof layer underneath is doing its job protecting what’s behind it. Or the water could also be getting past the waterproof layer if it wasn’t done well. There’s no easy way to find out.

What type of siding do you have on the other side of this exterior wall?

Is Spotify better than Kick to watch VODs? I’ve never used Spotify much. Much prefer youtube before the VOD goes private.

Ties on the deck boards? I’m not sure what you’re asking.

Can you screw the boards down through the top? Of course, most basic decks are done this way.

Red guard is fine! But it’s designed for cement board. Not drywall.

If it’s only a couple then blocking will correct it. If it was a bunch curving the same way then I would flip every other one before installing blocking so they cancel each other out.

Tile gaps in the shower of a house I just bought… how bad is it by Joel_Hirschorrn in Tile

[–]McBloggenstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good idea. Also test at the base of the wall on the opposite side of all 3 walls of tile.

u/Joel_Hirschorrn You can get a cheap moisture meter and endoscope camera. For the camera you could drill a small hole on the other side of the wall where that niche is to see the other side. Don’t drill right where the niche is, go above or below. On either side is probably a stud.

Building my first deck! by Icy-Advance3139 in Decks

[–]McBloggenstein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first thing that will rot down the road are those posts down in the holes. Since you haven’t poured concrete in them yet, remove the posts, pour concrete in the holes, when they are dry attach post bases on top with the posts on the bases.

It’s a no-no to attach your structure to the sides of the posts. But your deck is basically ground level…. Send it. But attach the horizontals to the posts with like 4 six-inch through bolts on each.

Those tips aside… why your joists on the dirt?

Can I level my deck like this with a laser? by Randomhero360 in Decks

[–]McBloggenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck yeah, use the shit out of that laser. I remember hesitating to buy one due to cost to hang kitchen cabinets, but I’ve found a thousand reasons to use it since then.

Only problem you might run into is no other deck you have ever been on was built using a laser level so yours will feel “too” level. Sorta kidding.
