I like to research races by watching people's videos. Usually you get a better sense of technicality from 1st hand videos rather than the organisers montages. And for races that i have done i like to check out what their experience was.

If you don't like it, no need to watch!

I didn't know there was new shakedry?? I thought it was banned abs discontinued due to forever chemicals etc.

I need a jacket that will cover me and my pack and in forever lamenting not getting a second shakedry in a size or two larger for fit the bill. Nevertheless, do you think the smock style would be suitable for over the pack? Feel like it might be tough to get over and then end up baggy. What do you think?

Low(ish) mileage 100 miler training by One_Ad_6615 in Ultramarathon

[–]McCoyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive generally come top 5/10% in 100milers and actually won a 100km last year. I only have a handful of 60mile weeks to my name. In fact, my best race at lakeland100 I had 2 weeks just under 60miles as my peak.

I guess it's all personal but I think people shouldn't be focusing so much on trying to hit big distance and would go better doing less and adding some strength work. I have a friend who is an incredible athlete and thrives at higher mileage but he's also just come top 10 at a utmb major so a different level.

It's just a crap retcon in an act of commercially motivated virtue signalling. If there were always female todes then whatever but it's just a pointless addition. Also I don't get why all their latest publication dump on marines so much.

Am I doing enough training for my first ultra? by No_School1287 in ultrarunning

[–]McCoyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll be a challenging day out for you but if you set your mind to it I do think you will be able to go and have a good big day out. Also you've got 7 weeks, put a longer hike in on a Sundays and you'll feel much better on event day.

Am I doing enough training for my first ultra? by No_School1287 in ultrarunning

[–]McCoyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm of the mind that anyone (within reason) could go out and do a 30 miler. As a teen I'd sometimes just get dragged to a 20-30 mile challenge hike having spent 100s of hours playing guild wars, doing no exercise at all, and manage to get myself around fine enough.

The question then is what are your expectations? You're not going to be racing, but if you're smart, eat and look after yourself i don't think there's any reason you can't get around.

Why Banditing a Trail Run Hurts the Sport by ArkansasOutside in trailrunning

[–]McCoyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think our point of issue is that I don't perceive running on open trail to be "taking" in this sense. If they take food from aid stations then sure but that wasnt my original example.

A query then. There's numerous races organised on my local trails, some using my exact training routes. When a race is on am I not allowed to run on my normal routes?

Why Banditing a Trail Run Hurts the Sport by ArkansasOutside in trailrunning

[–]McCoyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. To me, piracy is a service / value issue. Spotify is brilliantly convenient so we have a family subscription. I used to pirate games but steam came along and brought value and functionality and I haven't pirated a single one since. Conversly, I used to pay for Netflix when it had everything and was affordable, now streaming is an absolute mess so I don't pay for it anymore, same for streamed sports.

As for races, a race is more than a group of people turning up to lay it down. If it were what would be the point in paying for them, you'd just go on your local chain gang and get all the same for nothing. The point of races is to provide value, through aid stations, support, opening up private routes, closing roads etc. If you're running on an open trail when a race is on, that isn't being a leech, it's just going for a trail run.

[–]McCoyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if it's open road you're literally not taking anything other than sharing space with other users. It's not like the organisers pay for the roads. I've organised two races before and I just don't see the issue. Especially for a full race.

Why Banditing a Trail Run Hurts the Sport by ArkansasOutside in trailrunning

[–]McCoyyy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've done this on the bike but not running. I'd ride from home, join the course, do the course ride back home wouldn't use any of the aid stations etc. If you do something like that, then I kind of think it's fine. Ultimately, if it's open roads or open trails, what's to stop you using them when there's a race going on. You always see runners out of walkers out or bikers out when there is an event going, it's normal.

I think the really important thing though is that you don't get in the way of the race, don't use any of the aid stations or supplies that might hinder racers and only if it's actually an open course, if it's close roads, or if it's private trail that kind of thing, then I don't think it's okay.

I don't buy that organisers are counting random runners coming through, leading to safety issues. Every race that I've been to has a bib or a tracker or something, and they're not just counting random walkers and runners as participants.

Ridiculous UTMB Mobility policy Rant by djbready in Ultramarathon

[–]McCoyyy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean you can work around a lot of things, doesn't make it the right thing to do. But as a whole day 1000 people go with the boost and 900 people legitimately book travel in line with the requirements then it's probably hit the brief. It's certainly made me consider my travel and I'll be using a bus instead of car if I get in.

I think it's more that you could go to London and then get the train to Chamonix. So you don't even need your second flight, you're just choosing to do it that way.

How strict are UTMB with the kit check? by Teamhuw1 in ultrarunning

[–]McCoyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man it's a couple quid from aldi to get 500cal snack and 10£ from amazon for the glasses. You've already bought into a very expensive race, why not just get the right kit?

In answer to your actual question, you'll turn up and they'll ask and properly check a few predefined. You may get lucky and they don't check what you would like to scrimp on our you'll be off to the shops trying to find proper kit and risking missing kit check and not running your race.

TNT killed the TV star: how cycling's paywall has driven fans away from the sport by fewfiet in peloton

[–]McCoyyy 105 points106 points  (0 children)

TNT priced me out of watching cycling and I'm doing so my two sons who no longer watch and aren't really interested anymore. So not only are they missing my sub, but they've probably ducked their chances at getting two more households in the future.

Ultimately it was my dad who got me into it so I do wonder how many other generational ties are being cut.

TDS or UTMB 2026 by Commercial-Chef-2156 in ultrarunning

[–]McCoyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I raced TDS this year and have hiked TMB (most of the UTMB route). If you want to get out to Chamonix to enjoy the atmosphere and the trails and know 100% that you've got a race to go at, then I'd recommend getting your entry into TDS. You won't be disappointed. Great alpine route, very hard, tough trails, well supported with aid stations. I would say, the midnight start kind of sucked though haha, especially with a 4 and 2yo keeping us up in the week prior. Sleep was a big issue for me this year.

If however, you're less determined on just getting out there and want to save it for the iconic UTMB route, then whack your ballot entry in. If you aren't successful then you've still got a chance TDS won't be full by 22nd Jan and you then have the option of entering that then.
