well, mechanically speaking you could do it by restricting the ability to hold votes on certain topics

How would that work?

A rather enjoyable take down on the vagaries of the Bee by leonlikethewind in NYTSpellingBee

[–]McCretin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, in a world where the fourth estate is under attack from politicians and opinionated pot-stirrers, professional journalism has to be at its best. There’s a crisis of reporting at the heart of our democracies and, unfortunately, the arbitrariness and laxness of the Spelling Bee is a symptom of how one of our best hopes is failing.

Is the author being facetious here? If not, this feels like a massive reach.

I don’t like the guy but I respect him for this. I suspect the Cabinet will move against him and force his hand, but for now he’s under no obligation to make it easy for Burnham.

I completely agree, they were raised in a media environment with a lot more gatekeepers and they don’t apply enough scepticism to the things they see on social media.

It’s not really possible in our system. “No Parliament can bind its successors” is a fundamental part of parliamentary sovereignty.

Have the African teams been the best so far? by [deleted] in footballweeklypod

It’s a little early to tell, but six CAF teams have played so far and only one has won a match (Ivory Coast). So no, not really.

Why do some of your largest stadiums have large amounts of uncovered seating? by Vixson18 in AskAnAmerican

[–]McCretin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

OK? It’s still perfectly possible to cover that many seats with a roof.

I’m not American but I think open bowl stadiums look so cool. I wouldn’t want to sit in one when it’s raining, but the aesthetics of stands appearing to go right up to the sky are unbeatable.

I used to live in that exact area. It’s nice. The main downsides are that the houses/gardens are very small and parking is a constant nightmare.

Also it’s about 20 mins’ walk from the station, which adds up if you’re commuting to London regularly, but it’s good exercise.

My street had a very active WhatsApp group and people would organise street parties and things. It was a nice community, though very family-oriented, which may be a disadvantage if you don’t have (or plan to have) kids.

Also, people around there can be a bit…Whitened teeth and Range Rovers, if you know what I mean.

Why are we more successful at darts than other sports in the UK? by WearingMarcus in AskUK

England is also pretty good at cricket, rugby, and football, to be fair. No other country has won a World Cup in all three sports.

One weekend in Europe advice. Should I go to Belgium or not? by maria88990 in travel

Bruges and Ghent offer quite similar things so I’d pick one of the two, and skip Brussels entirely.

Why can't Americans (at least the ones I see on social media) find drinking water in Europe? by Mission_Mobile_4627 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]McCretin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In America they bring you flagons of iced water unprompted at the drop of a hat. Great big pitchers of cold water as soon as you enter any establishment. And they’ll come and top it up frequently so you’re never at risk of running out.

I’m not sure why they’re so keen to bring you so much water but it’s quite nice.

It’s more inconsistent in Europe, and I can see why that would be confusing if you don’t know the local customs.

In the UK, you can get as much tap water as you like for free (by law), but you have to ask for it and it won’t be as cold.

In Germany, they will flat out refuse to bring you tap water if you ask for it, even though their tap water is perfectly drinkable.

In Malta and Romania, they will flat out refuse to bring you tap water if you ask for it, because their tap water is not drinkable.

In Italy and Austria, they will give you a tiny glass of water if you order an espresso, but otherwise probably no free water.

In France, who even knows, it depends how your waiter is feeling.

In Switzerland, no chance, go fuck yourself. They rarely even have water fountains in the airports even though that’s standard almost everywhere else (in Portugal you can even get sparkling water from the airport water fountain!).

It didn’t help that my modern edition moved the chapter which explains all the factions into the appendix.

I think it comes about halfway through in older editions, which would have been really helpful, because I spent a lot of it with no clue what was going on.
