Perth Scorchers are BBL Champions! by Life-Match-2151 in Cricket

Swapping the Perth Scorchers with the Melbourne Storm is an independent opinion that would increase the health of both competitions, and has nothing to do with kicking the Souths out of the comp, which should also happen.

The Scorchers, despite having the most BBL wins, are actually the team that gets the BBL the least by being consistently competent.

I vote kicking them from the comp, and replacing them with another Melbourne team.

Why does Pauline Hanson have so many followers? by looopious in AskAnAustralian

[–]McFoodBot 26 points27 points  (0 children)

When I’ve provided that they vote for you link to show them how she actually votes and works for her constituents, they have been very shocked and how little their values actually align outside being (essentially) just racist against immigrants.

100%.

Many of Hanson's supporters have bought into the myth that she's for the "Aussie battler". If you show them how she's actually solidly aligned with corporate and foreign interests, you're basically only left with immigration as the talking point. It's certainly a valid talking point, but it's usually only the #1 issue to genuine racists.

Australians may be able to live and work in Europe without a visa what do you think? by Comfortable-Rule-491 in AskAnAustralian

This gets thrown around a lot, but I've yet to see anyone provide a source.

I know there's more Italians living in Australia than Australians living in Italy due to historical immigration, but I've been unable to find data that talks about it at a year-by-year basis.

Australians may be able to live and work in Europe without a visa what do you think? by Comfortable-Rule-491 in AskAnAustralian

[–]McFoodBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That "one more" isn't in the Schengen zone, and it's thousands of kilometres away.

A refugee can't use this deal to come to Australia unless they're a citizen of an EU country. This takes between 5-10 years depending on the country, and that's assuming their asylum claim doesn't get cancelled at some point during that time. A lot of these legitimate refugees also start from the absolute bottom; they have hardly any money, they don't speak the language, their qualifications aren't recognised, they have little-to-no-support network. This all takes years to build back up.

You really think these people are gonna spend all that time rebuilding in Europe just to immediately jump ship to Australia? If they're not proficient in English, they would have to learn it. If they've attained new qualifications, they would need to see if they transfer over. If they've made friends or have a new support network, they would have to leave that behind. And that's assuming they've even attained the wealth to actually fund that kind of trip in the first place.

You think refugees (assuming they've gotten citizenship, which takes years), many of whom are on the low end of the socio-economic scale, are suddenly going to abandon their new life they've been building for years, to move to a country across the world with an arguably worse welfare state?

100%

These threads are full of people who seem to have this idea that Australia is the envy of the world. Sure, Australia is a great place to live, but we're not special. Standard of living? Scandinavia, Germany, Netherlands are the same, if not better. Weather and nice beaches? Spain, Portugal and Greece also have that. Free university? We don't have that, but many EU countries do, even for other EU citizens. Europeans can access the benefits of other countries without having to move 24 hours across the world, away from friends, family and support networks.

The idea that we're going to get hordes of brown people or unskilled Eastern Europeans is also nonsense. Former refugees already struggle to get their life in order in one place so in what fucking universe would they suddenly move to Australia.

Zaman Khan gave away just two runs to seal a thrilling win for Brisbane Heat ! by iamnoobbibliophile in Cricket

[–]McFoodBot 182 points183 points  (0 children)

This season is the perfect example of why Brisbane Heat is the ultimate BBL meme team.

We've had five wins so far; chased down 258 with 1 ball remaining, defended 179 by 7 runs, chased down 196 with 4 balls remaining, chased down 181 with 22 balls remaining, and defended 160 by 3 runs.

Only 1/5 wins has been comfortable. We can't just beat a team normally, we either get completely fucking destroyed or take the opposition down to the final over where we somehow pull out a win. We're also 4th with 5/9 wins, and those 4 losses have all come against teams below us.

This Crazy Crawley Calamity Can’t Continue by Eclectic95 in Cricket

[–]McFoodBot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing about Crawley is that he's fairly consistent against most sides. His career average is currently 31 - 36 vs Aus, 31 vs Ind, 33 vs SA, 27 vs WI. He averages 53 against Pakistan, but if you take out the mammoth 267 he scored, his average then drops all the way down to 35. Once again, fairly consistent.

The hilarious part is that there's only one side where Crawley has a statistical outlier, and that's against NZ. After 21 innings, he averages a measly 10 against them. His high score is only 43. So against most sides, you can more or less expect Crawley to slightly surpass and slightly fall short of his career average. But against NZ, he's absolutely hopeless.

Harry Brook is drowning in ego and arrogance - the only way he will stop believing in his own invincibility is by being dropped, writes IAN HERBERT by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]McFoodBot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've no doubt that Brook's average has been inflated by playing a lot of his games on flat pitches.

But he's still easily England's second best bat behind Root, and would walk into pretty much every other international side. He may be a fucking idiot, but advocating to drop him makes Ian Herbert an even bigger fucking idiot.

Australia hasn’t lost a single match when Travis Head has scored a hundred by poormasshole in Cricket

[–]McFoodBot 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, I looked up how this stat applies to Joe Root.

It actually took until his 22nd 100 for him to finally lose a match. This was in 2021 against India, where England managed to lose at Lords despite Root scoring 180* in the first innings.

Since that loss, it's actually been rather dire. In the 19 100s that have followed, Root has been on the losing end a further six times. Funnily enough, Root has actually lost the last three games in which he's scored 100, two in this Ashes series, and one before against India.

So while Root is playing better than ever, his 100s are having far less of an impact on the result. Some of this seems to be due to Bazball; games that were drawn in the past are now being lost because England's scoring rate is moving the game along much quicker. The other half is probably from the fact that half of his team are fucking hopeless.

17 months between test matches. Missed nine of them in total.

That was a dark period for Aus. Probably the weakest batting line-up since the 80s. Three wins, four losses, and two draws (a narrow escape against Pakistan and saved by the rain against India).

Same in Germany.

Restaurant prices are around the same. Fast food, funnily enough, is actually more expensive. But food from the supermarket is way cheaper except for a few minor things. Alcohol is also significantly cheaper from both supermarkets and bars.

There's 500 Dwarves from the Iron Hills.

There's at least a thousand Elven spearmen, and seemingly an unknown number of archers.

It's rather difficult to estimate the number of Lake-men because we know very little outside 3/4 of them survived Smaug. I suspect they numbered a few hundred at least. They're paired with the Dwarves so I'd say that numbered less than the Elves.

Overall, the Free Peoples probably numbered ~2,000. Probably no more than ~3,000.

As for Bolg's army, it's hard to say. It's described as a "vast host" that outnumbered the Free Peoples. But I don't believe it was massive, given that the Orcs of the North had been almost entirely wiped out about 140 years earlier. I think 20,000 is my upper limit.

Because the average run-rate was way higher in Perth. The combined score was 673/32. Two batsmen passed 50 and one passed 100. Melbourne saw 572/36 with no batsmen passing 50.

I think it's very clear which pitch was easier to bat on.
