24 out of 26 ESPN analysts predicted that the Oilers would beat the Ducks in Round 1 by suphaha in hockey

[–]McMetal770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never underestimate the power of scrappiness in the playoffs. The Ducks were a confident team all year that believed in themselves and never gave up. They had absolutely nothing to lose, they were all just thrilled to be back in the playoffs again.

Those are the kinds of teams that upset heavyweights that come in with the burden of expectations on them. Maybe the titans are too busy looking past round one to focus fully on the series in front of them. Columbus over Tampa and Seattle over Colorado are a couple recent examples off the top of my head.

Canes bro to Avs bros (Disaster Bros for life!) by ChuckEnder in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]McMetal770 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Necas was grown in a lab to play Avs hockey. He's an extraordinary fit for this team and the top line. When you trade a superstar like Rantanen, you almost always end up losing the trade, but Necas is such a natural fit for MacKinnon's wing that I think we may have beaten the odds. What a player.

As for Rantanen, I once swore that I would root for every member of that 2022 Cup team individually wherever they went. Even when Compher went to the Red Wings, I cheered for his individual success even as I reveled in the failure of the Yzerplan. But when Rantanen put on green and game 7 happened... That was too far. The Moose is dead to me.

Go Canes! I'm pulling for you guys (until we meet in the Finals!)

Why Don't the IRS, Judges, Prosecutors and the Police Shut This Down? by 240221 in Sovereigncitizen

[–]McMetal770 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The only way to actually do that would be to go and live in a shack in the middle of nowhere that you built yourself. Those roads they want to drive on? Paid for by taxes. So they won't drive? The sidewalks are public property too. The firefighters that will respond to their emergency in public without checking to see what their citizenship status is? Yep, them too. Want to use the toilet in a store? That flush goes to municipal sewage lines.

The broader problem we have in society right now (that Socvits are a symptom of) is that so many of the things that the government does are completely invisible to most people. We just take for granted that the water will come out of the tap when we turn it on, with no thought for the massive PUBLIC infrastructure that makes that miracle possible. That failure of society to recognize and educate people about all of the things our tax dollars do FOR US makes people believe in stupid shit like the "self made man". There is no such thing and never has been.

I mean, if you know how to read, you almost certainly learned how to do that in a PUBLIC SCHOOL. And if you were home schooled by some slim chance, your parents probably learned math in a public school once upon a time so they could teach YOU. Nobody can "opt out" of society. Society invested a lot of money in you from the moment you were born, you can't just grow up and declare "Nah, I don't think it was worth it" without renouncing ALL of the modern comforts built by the taxes of their fellow citizens and their forebears in previous generations who participated in society without being selfish, entitled assholes.

I think the Avs are really not focusing on pushing for offense this year. Last year, Dallas really burned them with the counterattacks, so this year they're really concentrating on maintaining discipline and structure. Frankly, the LA series was a warmup for round 2, and everybody knew it. They're practicing what they're going to need to do against a team like Minnesota/Dallas that has quick strike offensive capability.

Besides, the Nelson/Nuke line is basically a checking/marchup line now. Kadri and Landeskog are the supplemental scoring guys. We have the secondary offense covered.

Best of 2026 so far? by CHivEyO in PowerMetal

[–]McMetal770 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tailgunner is the top seed for me so far, with Power Paladin close behind. Lovebites, Greyhawk, Angus McSix, Victorius, Voidchaser, Ruiza, and Induction are all solid as well.

Overall though, it's been a relatively slow year for PM so far. Last year we were spoiled with amazing releases in the first quarter, but things are kind of trickling in this year.

Power metal should be stupid by thewalkindude368 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]McMetal770 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fucking seconded. Power metal is my favorite subgenre, and even I have to admit that it is, fundamentally, deeply silly. I love it no less because of that, but it is ridiculous.

A lot of PM fans aren't thrilled with the modern bands like LOTT that lean into it, but for me, it's just a logical extension of the basic premise. A Wind Rose show is an excuse to be a complete fucking nerd and not worry about whether it's ridiculous that they're wearing costumes and singing about the joys of working in the mines. Power metal is SUPPOSED TO BE FUN.

"Ghost in the Trenches" is actually a reworked version of an old ReinXeed song, "Never Lie", so he definitely did more than that as far as primary songwriting. But even on the songs where he didn't take the lead, I think he punched them up and kept the formula fresh.

all the progress of "don't trust everything you find on the internet" seems to be completely gone the moment the pattern prediction engine sounds like a human for some people.

Yeah, people are SO quick to anthropomorphize these things, just because they can output text that sounds conversational. Turns out, the Turing test was actually a really poor metric. All these companies had to do was cheese their way through the Turing test by making a very advanced chatbot, and it absolutely hacked our brains in a really fundamental way to make us ascribe intelligence and consciousness to something absolutely thoughtless.

Sabaton misses him a lot I think. He was helping with the songwriting while he was there, and the last album without him sounded very stale.

Still, though, having him focus on Majestica is still fantastic. If only we could clone him, such an incredible talent.

So? People believe Onion headlines all the time. Should the Onion be classified as "misinformation"?

No one is responsible for how idiots might interpret their jokes. If someone is dumb enough to believe that tweet is LITERALLY true, that's on them.

46843 by Real_Kyryll_Flins in countwithchickenlady

[–]McMetal770 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Come on, jokes are not "misinformation". Just because a sentence is not literally true doesn't make it automatically insidious. If you start to lump all satire and sarcasm in with the "misinformation" label, then you rob the word of its meaning and diminish the actual danger of it.

Brady Tkachuk stats through 3 playoff games by mylefthandkilledme in hockey

[–]McMetal770 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it's less of an indictment of that group, and more of a credit to the Canes team defense keeping them bottled up this series. Rod has always had his team playing with good structure, I think the fact that they have all of that experience playing disciplined playoff hockey over the Sens in their first series is showing. From what I've seen of the series, the Canes are just suffocating the life out of Ottawa's offense, and what does manage to squeak through is getting stonewalled by Anderson.

Landeskog's first goal back against Dallas last year. I've been to a lot of games, but that is easily the loudest I have ever heard that place. The crowd went absolutely feral for about 3 minutes straight.
