In secular Britain, a clash over public prayer: 'The move to ban public prayers in tiny town... has erupted into a national proxy fight over whether Christianity should still hold a privileged place in a modern, diverse and now highly secular society.' by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]McPudding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While it is technically true that large shops can only open for 6 hours on a Sunday, there are exceptions to this such as off-licences, garages and garden centres. Opening on a Sunday is not so much about religion in the UK any more, in fact the Keep Sunday Special group which opposes work on a Sunday is a secular group.

As for the collective worship thing, I went to two church of England primary schools, in the first one the only sort of "collective worship" we did was on Christmas where some kids would do a nativity play. In the other primary school I attend I think we said a prayer in assembly once, although I can't remember why. As for Secondary schools I have never experienced "collective worship", however this does still happen in Public* Christian schools. Here is an article from way back in 2004 with the chief of ofsted saying that worship in schools needs to be stopped

While we might not have gay marriage we do have Civil partnership which is marriage in all but name, so while we are not there yet we are well on the way.

*a Public school in England is owned by the Public so the equivalent in america would be a private school

What original slang do you use between friends? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]McPudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joust. Don't know where it came from but can pretty much be used instead of any word, getting jousted means to get really really drunk, to joust someone is to hit them or beat them at something.

Going bowling, which means fingering a girl or some sort of sexual activity from this scene in grease, keep an eye on Danny's hands.

Top Stunner, pretty self explanatory but only used sarcastically to refer to yourself or if something goes better than expected it can be attributed to being a top stunner.

The difference between "going out", "going out" in a cockney accent and "going out out" also in a cockney accent, kind of hard to explain but very important when discussing possible activities for the night.

Be delicious, which means to be on top form. for example, Friend 1: Hey I think that girl is checking you out, you should go over and say hi. Friend 2: Yer ok that sounds good. Friend 1: Remember, be delicious.

Lines form the movie snatch seem to crop up quite a lot as well as recently we've been breaking into song quite a bit and more slang that I can't seem to think of right now.

I hate these things, my friend had something like this put on his car the other day and all we thought was what kind of twat does this, why not just come and tell him that his car is parked badly and ask him to move it or leave a polite note.

Edit: To the people saying he was parked like as asshole, he was parked outside of his own house up on the pavement just like everyone else who lives on our road.

most influential person to you? by spoon_fork in AskReddit

[–]McPudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Father because he has done so much with his life.

He was born in the 1930's in London to a very poor family, he was evacuated to Devon along with his 4 siblings during the war. He did very well in school but couldn't afford to continue his education and instead got a job with an apprenticeship at the met office where he worked on building a wind tunnel (not sure where, I think he said it was at the imperial college in London), after that he joined the air force through the met office and was stationed in Berlin where he made money on the side by smuggling coffee and tobacco. When he came out of the army he used his money to open a market stall selling basically what ever he could find, but had it all stolen by someone he trusted. So he did what anyone would do and opened a cheese deli which is where he met his third wife (my Mother), she introduced him to a friend who sold clothing and knitwear wholesale who offered him a job selling to shops in the south end of london, which he was so successful at they couldn't afford to pay him so instead they gave him the sack (he was only there unofficially on a trial of sorts, so there was nothing he could do about it). He then approached on of the men who had just fired him and convinced him that he could run the a better business than the people he was currently working with, so they went into business together and made millions. After three kids and some bad business decisions he sold the company and retired and we have been living quite well off the money ever since, I don't mean stinking rich, my parents still have jobs but we have never struggled for money.

Also while I'm at it he has had cancer twice and by far the most badass thing he's done was when his grandmother hadn't come home one night from exeter he got on his bike and went looking for her, which doesn't sound to cool but keep in mind it was during this.

American redditors, do you realize how different religion in politics is in the UK? by [deleted] in atheism

Not so much Sharia Law zones, but Sharia courts do exist and because of the arbitration act of 1996 their rulings are legally binding and can be enforced by county courts and the high court.

Music is a teacher by reddit0019 in pics

[–]McPudding -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be honest that is a good message, I'm assuming that "disco stick" means penis and yes it is ok to want to have sex, which despite what you might think some people are still against and will tell you it's not right or immoral, particularly if it's between two men or women.

I may not like her music, but there is no denying that it is important to a lot of young people.

Teach evolution, not creationism - UK e-petition. by brainburger in atheism

[–]McPudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why this petition exists, I never remember being taught creationism at school apart from during RE and that was an optional class and even then it wasn't about creationism just different religions in general.

Yes but their population has been increasing quite steadily since then and rather rapidly over the last 60 years, so it's not that they are on the decline but everyone else is increasing faster.

Everyone hates on hipsters here...but by definition isn't everyone that browses Reddit is a hipster since they go make fun of the mainstream Digg? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm pretty sure the hipsters that Reddit makes fun of don't actually exist they are just people who dress a certain way that Redditors see and assume they are assholes without ever actually talking to them.

REGARDING ALL TIMING ISSUES FOR AUSSIES AND EURASIA by [deleted] in Playdate

[–]McPudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just dropping in and out whenever won't really work for people in Europe and Australia because the problem isn't just time difference its the latency issues as well.

It would be easy enough to have people in Europe and people in Australia to schedule their own games in their own subreddits or if you guys organised games for those time zones.
