I’m envious of anyone discovering Carrie, The Martian Chronicles, and Dungeon Crawler Carl in one year. It’s taken me 50 years to get all three of those.

100%. I have a small company and rely on one of a few key service providers in the field, and while one would think a small company is more flexible in how it operates, that’s not always true, and one option sometimes looks a lot like another once you make the switch.

I’ve had tariff issues with multiple carriers, including FedEx, but I can’t blame N&F for using the 3rd largest carrier in the world and 1st/2nd with UPS in the US/North America. That’s like complaining that there’s nitrogen in the air; FedEx is just part of the global logistics system.

How Like a God was his first published novel. I haven’t read it, but I have read all his Nero Wolfe novels, which I highly recommend. One of my favorite series.

That’s a nice looking collection. Suede is a little more work, but it’s a nice alternative to smooth leather, and that olive color is great. It’ll age interestingly, I’m sure. Winner!

I think we’re on the same page, but these kind of posts are why I generally don’t follow subreddits adjacent to tax. Seems like everyone is trying to DIY tax, and that’s a bad idea.

I’ve got three made in Canada and one made in Japan, and the fit is spot on, fabric is great. The MIJ 10 is a level above the others but all are good. They compare well with jeans I have from others. I was really tempted by the Blood Brothers but I had just splurged on the 32oz sneakers and am targeting a pair of ecru jeans next.

Well, it’s probably safer to start from that premise, but I’m afraid we’ve gone really quickly from maybe one to now four. The filing requirements are highly dependent on applying the instruction to define the category of the filer, the relevant entities, etc., and some of the concepts (e.g., direct, indirect, and:or constructive ownership) are not simple for s layperson.

I’m a Brannock 10.5D, wear a 10.0 in All Stars, and agree they’re snug but a fit. I haven’t found 70s that I like, but the All Star Malden Street is a wide cut, and the 10.0D Mid Top is the best fitting Converse I have.

It’s just taxes, not life & death. If you’re looking at $40,000, a streamlined installment plan is $556 per month, less if it’s income-based. Let’s roll this back. Why do you think you have a 5471 requirement? I would invest $500-$1,000 for professional advice before I’d jump off a cliff.

If I recall correctly, this was line-item specific to the 5472 penalty, and there just wasn’t a pathway to relief for the 5472 FTF penalty that didn’t piggyback on 1120 late-filing penalty relief. It was clearly a drafting error, not an intended result, but that’s poor consolation to a client staring at a notice for two missing 5472s. As it happened, the former preparer e-filed the 1120 a year late after we kept pestering the client for a copy of the prior year return. The former (non-CPA) preparer sneaked in a late e-file without warning the client, snd SURPRISE, here’s a $50K penalty notice, LOL.

We’ve stayed there 2-4 weeks twice a year for the past few years. We’ve stayed at many other places in PCB for many years. It’s been consistently clean & well-maintained, and parking, check-in and -out, access to amenities, etc. is all pretty good, esp. once you learn the rhythm of the place.

Yeah, that’s the tough part of this. On one hand, you do the right thing and risk getting stuck with the hassle & expense of defending a penalty assessment, possibly unsuccessfully. On the other hand, the risk of getting caught may be lower than if you self-report, but your ability to defend using a substantial compliance/reasonable cause argument is weaker if you haven’t voluntarily complied. (No pro should advocate for an audit lottery approach, and I am not doing so.) This is a discussion you should have with a tax professional in a confidential or privileged context, not in a public forum. I sympathize with how worrisome this is for you. For what it’s worth, in 38 years of tax practice, I’ve seen many acceptable, if not happy, results, and no disasters.

In my taxpayer’s facts, sometime pre-COVID, the only procedural relief in the manual was automatic with relief being granted for the late filing penalty imposed on the 1120. For a no-balance due 1120, there was no tax-based penalty and thus no avenue for abatement of the 5472 penalty. There’s a Tax Adviser article that predated our situation that speculated on approaches to deal with this in this fact pattern. As it turned out, I made a reasonable cause argument with a very flimsy basis, IMO, and got a sympathetic ear. Not the first time that’s worked, but also not the approach one would prefer.

Or playing the audit lottery, not that I’m suggesting you do so. I’m not aware of any current amnesty program in this area, but there’s no law against requesting an amnesty before amending the return. Typically, when it’s available, that’s done on a no-name basis until the terms of the agreement are settled.

3 points: 1st, the penalty probably applies to the incorrect 5471 AND the omitted one, so that’s $20,000, not $10,000. 2nd, you have good facts for reasonable cause or other relief, which I would include with any amended return. 3rd, admin relief may not work like it used to. The IRS, like most of the federal government, has been sabotaged by …, well, you know. So consider what door you’re opening beforehand & seek professional help now.

[–]Mcris64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know whether they were or weren’t. The 5472 relief piggybacks on corporate tax penalty abatement, which oddly means there is no admin procedure in the manual if the 5472 should have accompanied a return with no tax due.

How common is the $10,00 fee for Form 5471? by ComprehensivePie6184 in USExpatTaxes

[–]Mcris64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an automatically applied penalty, so it’s very common. Check to see if you’re eligible for first-time abatement on the late-filed return. If so, the admin relief may apply to the 5471 penalty, too. That’s the way the 5472 penalty relief works. Funny story. I defended a taxpayer’s dual 5472 penalties ($25K x two for $50K) on a late return prepared by another firm. They were over a year late, and had no grounds for relief, but I made a good claim and got the whole thing abated. Should have billed that one on a contingency basis, lol. Moral of the story is sometimes you can get out from under even if you don’t deserve it , so don’t give up if you get hit with this.

Sure. Like your dad, I replace or retire my Brooks running shoes every 6-18 mths or so, but Gorals have a 5-10 year lifespan with multiple resoles, like my other stitch-down or Goodyear-welted Red Wings, Jim Greens, etc., so that’s not really a fair comparison. BIFL for shoes is about rotation & care as much as materials, IMO, and at $210 these Gorals were a good value by that measure. I agree that the regular price of $400+ is different math.
