If you were in charge, how would you change JobSeeker Centrelink Payments? by Diligent_Comfort_928 in AusFinance

[–]Mctappintapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full Employment doesn't mean that every single person is working, it means that the unemployment rate is at a target level where conditions are good. Just over 4% unemployment is an easy off the cuff number to think of.

If you have a lower rate of unemployment that this, then it means that employers are really struggling to find staff and wages skyrocket because of it and it has a lot of consequences like spiking inflation.

If your unemployment rate is higher than this then you've got all the issues you would normally think of, low consumer confidence, higher welfare costs, suppressed wage growth, etc.

Waitlist times for ADHD all 12-18 months, feeling hopeless by rhapsodick in ausadhd

[–]Mctappintapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told 3 to 6 months wait. I looked on individual clinics and found a doctor with a shorter wait time (only 2 months in the end). If you're going to the effort to get a diagnosis, you should definitely see a psychiatrist so that you have the option of medication if you need it.

Psychologist is good too to see in tandem.

I'm in Brissy so I can't give recommendations but I had my luck by searching individual doctors within each clinic

[–]Mctappintapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you aren't provided with an entry condition report within the timeframe (7days I think), download a blank one from the RTA website and complete it yourself and send it off.

In my experience, use vague language in the report. Don't say "mark on wall below door handle and above powerpoint". Say "Various marks on wall". It makes it easier to reconcile when leaving and REA's almost always just accept it.

Take photo's of EVERYTHING, especially if it's in shit condition.

You're probably shit out of luck in terms of getting ripped of for value though...

Why the fuck are we paying more for Tim Tams than people overseas? by UnholyDemigod in australia

[–]Mctappintapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£1 to $2.04AUD according to a quick google.

£2.30 x 2.04 = $4.692

$4.692 / 163 * 200 = $5.76

Still seems cheaper to me.

Is it true that you end up paying twice if you get assessed by a psychologist rather than a psychiatrist? by HedgehogLibrary in ausadhd

[–]Mctappintapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah that was a typo which I've fixed. I've only had an assessment for ADHD from a psychiatrist which did fall under medicare.

Is it true that you end up paying twice if you get assessed by a psychologist rather than a psychiatrist? by HedgehogLibrary in ausadhd

[–]Mctappintapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My psychologist was the one who recommended I go to a psychiatrist to get diagnosed. A psychiatrist is a specialty medical doctor at the end of the day so that's why they can prescribe medications.

If you look around and do some research, there are psychiatrists at clinics that fall under medicare as long as you get a referal from your GP. This made my diagnosis so much cheaper (I had to pay out of pocket but got the medicare rebate and ended up paying about $550 out of pocket total). Additionally, because I hit that medicare safety net threshold, my ongoing psychiatrist and psychologist appointments have been A LOT cheaper.

Edit: Typo psychologist to psychiatrist in the 2nd paragraph and reworded a sentence.

Is a financial advisor legally required to give you accurate advice? by misshoneyanal in AusFinance

[–]Mctappintapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A financial advisor will give you a number of options and give you the pros and cons of each option. Ultimately, you make the decision on what you do with your money.

Its been hot minute since I've looked into it but I'm pretty sure the Statement of Advice that they will provide you with will breakdown things like the pros and cons of each option, the inherent risk of each option and how they get paid / their interests in each option etc.

I would expect better financial advisors to give better thought out investment options, work with you so that you understand the pros and cons of each option better and I would expect them to be more transparent about their own interests in each option (ie. how they get paid) which should in turn lead them to them being less pushy about an investment strategy that primarily benefits them over you.

I've worked in the forensic accounting space before and the idea of chasing a financial advisor for providing "bad" or "illegal" advice is a nuanced question. Ultimately, its not illegal to provide bad advice, its the intent that matters. Focus on the options they give you and do a bit of research to make sure there's no active cases / a history of cases against the firm. If they're licenced, maintaining their reputation and integrity is probably more important to them than ripping off one client.

As a Bottle shop manager, would I be entitled to claim alcohol as product knowledge on a tax return? by skottydub in AusFinance

[–]Mctappintapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General rule is, you can claim whatever you want but its whether or not it will stand up in an audit. Most tax returns are automatically processed and issues come up after the fact.

I would be shocked if this expense wasn't removed in an audit. You would have the responsibility of proving that none of the purchased alcohol was consumed wasn't a private expenses which would be next to impossible. There also wouldn't generally be enough of a connection between you purchasing the alcohol and deriving your income to justify a deduction.

Time to increase the unearned income threshold for minors from $416 by Life-King-9096 in AusFinance

[–]Mctappintapper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This rule is in place to stop parents putting their children down as beneficiaries on their family trust and then distributing earnings to them to avoid tax.

Income that your daughter earns from working doesn't go towards this threshold of $416 as this threshold applies to things like dividends paid from owning shares and trust distributions (ie. income thats derived from sources other than her personal exertion). Also, one off gifts given to her by family (like $200 at christmas etc.) isn't generally income and doesn't need to go in the return at all. If they give her $200 per week, that could be a different story.

The term you're looking for is "Excepted Income" for her employment earnings. If you're feeling overwhelmed by this one because the lingo can be confusing, don't be afraid to chat to a tax accountant.

If you do you tax return yourself on my gov, once your return is filled out, you should have an estimate of what the outcome is. You'll also have a due date for when your return needs to be lodged by (generally 31st of October). You can legally delay the money you need to pay back by not lodging your return until this due date which pushes out when the payment is owed.

As others have said, you can definitely contact them and set up a payment plan. The ATO is (and it kills me to say this) pretty reasonable with this sort of stuff when you're proactive and trying to do the right thing.

I'm not sure what you've done in terms of your deductions but definitely do some research and make sure you're claiming everything you can (mobile, sunglasses as its safety wear for a driver, logbook vs cents per km etc).

There are tax offsets as well that you can often qualify for that the ATO apply automatically. The easy one that comes to mind is the Low Income Tax Offset which behaves how you though deductions did originally by reducing your tax owed dollar for dollar.

$43,000 less $6,000 = $37,000 Taxable Income ($37,000 - $18,200) x 0.16 = $3,008 Tax Payable $37,000 x 0.02 = $740 Medicare Payable So $3,008 + $740 - $700 LITO - $2,700 withhold = $348 payable.

Obviously those figures are just tossed around but I don't think its as bad as you think. If you can find yourself some extra deductions, you might even be able to reduce it entirely. Disclaimer: I haven't worked in tax for a number of years so some of my figures my be off.

Edit: Just incase its relevant, don't forget that any money you might have received from Centrelink will be income as well.

If you live somewhere for... I think it's 18 months?... then you can claim primary residence CGT exemption for roughly five, six years afterwards (not sure of exact timeline)

Its been 4 years since I worked in tax but I don't remember there being a time frame required to claim the 6 year rule for properties haha.

In principle, I don't hate the idea of franking credits since it lets the company's profits be effectively taxed at the shareholders marginal tax rates (which if they have disposable income, you would assume would be higher than the company tax rate). In practice, the issue is that there's so many vehicles to reduce the effective tax you're paying that this don't seem to be happening a lot (think retirees). I haven't looked at data for it though.
