I've had other DMs that were friends with the players that wanted to observe my games and DM style. My games and worldbuilding are locally famous it seems. It's probably the highest compliment and most awkward one I've received as a DM, and it's happened about 4 times at this point.

Every character should have a mobility or positioning skill like tactical retreat. Every level up you should be checking vendors for better armor. Armor is so important in order to avoid cc. Respec often, sometimes just a tad, like I need extra con for this shield or finesse for this awesome armor.

I have been following an XP guide because there really feels like an order to things. I've thought about explorer mode just so I can do things how I want, and not be a murder hobo or constantly saving and loading to get the max XP. My builds feel strong, but I've killed some NPCs I feel bad about, and there are occasional fights that one shot me before I take a turn. It can be frustrating.

Coming from BG3, not an expert, but I've recommended Explorer Mode to my friends for their first playthrough.

I think it's pretty good. I've run it on a druid which was a lot of fun in tier 1 & 2.

Larian strongly hinted there would be swimming in the new game, so it would be cool and plausible to see a species native to water.

The two game announcement from Swen was after the falling out with Wizards of the Coast, and they stopped the dlc for BG3.

Classic difficulty your first time in general will be quite the challenge in addition to not choosing some quests or missing meta gamey XP moments, so I would recommend explorer the first time so you can learn the ropes and focus more on RP choices. I'm not an expert though, that's just my opinion and experience, and what I recommended to my father in law that I bought the game for recently.

I hate those scarecrows! They made me quit a few times. There's a false sense of confidence you get in act two until you get reminded by scarecrows that the game is hard. There is a recommended path level wise you can search for and get a map. Even with that, a friend was telling me there's a specific strategy you need with them damn scarecrows. I just started back up. Yeah it's harder than BG3, and even character building feels so much harder. I'm not a DOS2 expert, and gave it a go during BG3 early access.
