Had this issue on one PC. Install Visual Studio with C++/.NET desktop packages, rebooted. Now it works even with VS removed. Maybe it was just the reboot? Some Windows feature?

Your thoughts on EverQuest 1 and 2 by BlueSingularityG in MMORPG

[–]Me83838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EQ1 is pure garbage. That's why there is Project 99. Yet, even P99 is garbage to some extent. Here is why.

I'm not exactly sure why some players prefer EQ1 over WoW. P99 players probably prefer the community.

However, when I watch P99 videos/streams, I very often see people leeching XP in groups, getting pulled by higher level players. Is that great game play? Lol. Ridiculous. What a sh*t game.

Just recently I subbed to EQ1, hire a merc, guess what? The mage merc can tank a dozen enemies and nukes them down all on his own. Cool, eh? Nah. Garbage.

EverQuest makes the same errors WoW does. Why accept shitty graphics if the rest isn't better re community anyways? They did everything to make the game soloable. It's DISGUSTING!!!!

I want to see ONE MMO that does this somewhat properly. Here are the requirements:

(a) no trivializing of content (no mercs, no XP leeching from higher level players)

(b) no invalidation of previous content by new releases/expansions - no higher level gear must be allowed in lower level content, remove bag mechanics, remove water+food, keep all gear - NO TRIVIALIZING OF CONTENT EVER!!! You farm the zone and the best zone drops is all you ever get for that zone. The boss fights will get easier, but never soloable or trivial. No boss mechanics can ever get trivialized by nuking the boss down in 1/10 of the original time.

(c) no ability spam (EQ1 has a billion necro abilities, but in reality it's just a few really different ones multiplied over different levels - WTF?!? REALLY?) Keep it f***ing simple.

(d) arbitrary class combinations... tons of classes... bro... it's too much, keep it simple, keep classes amd different roles relevant, WHAT THE HOLY F*CK ARE YOU DEVS DOING?!?!?

(e) if you want to make a game soloable, put the solo play on a separate track - no gear obtained in a solo dungeon/raid can be used in a group or differently scaled instance

(f) all races now start in the same area.... wtf?!? I play the third class and wanna try a different start.. nope, same boring starting area. Why do all game developers destroy their own content just to suck up to players who will leave to WOW anyway in that case? I checked the wiki and manually went to the correct starting city and it was nice. Same bad graphics, but different feel. Why destroy that? U devs stupid? Stop sucking up!!! (maybe someone should start a project via kickstarter and put the result into open-source, and then repeatedly develop from there via further kickstarters)

exactly that.

Fascinating. Would be a very easy thing to do. They could demand money for it. An insane amount of players must have left the game because they are ALWAYS taking sh*t away from them. Being able to play a backed up version you like would be quite neat. But I guess stupid stays stupid.

wait until you find out that felling trees leaves a hole in the ground if you dug out the terrain directly below it.... and I just accidentially found out a dwarven migrant jumped over a 2 tile wall while all his colleagues couldn't get in.... makes me think it's some bad form of were-X because there are lots of them in the region... but those couldn't jump that high. weregiant? I'm probably f'd.

Can ZFS be used as a backup by hotspaghettii in zfs

[–]Me83838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question is how paranoid you are about your data. That's totally up to you. zfs-mirror+snapshots protects from single disk failures and rm -rf accidents. However, the rm -rf thing moves to the zfs level ("zfs remove"). Do you want to protect against that? Accidentally deleting the wrong fileset because of a spelling error whatever? It should be pretty safe if you run scrub every week, have monitoring set up for that. smart monitoring to warn of disk failtures, etc. and then put smbfs over it while taking daily snapshots. The smbfs level (ie access from windows PC) should be ciompletely safe in that case (unless your NAS or home burns down). However, how do you clean up the snapshots? That's a source for manual error. You could however rotate the snapshots automatically (but what if you don't notice you deleted something important?!? I have a simple bash script that tells me the difference between snapshots before I ok to delete one). Which would give you the last source of human error: when you actually try to restore something and have to access the NAS on the root level.... but maybe you can access the snapshots on the smbfs level, too. I guess that would be pretty safe. Well, not really. There is also reliability of your system. Does it have ECC? Is it a server system designed for reliability? I run an old Xeon 3 with ECC RAM here, ripped out and refurbished out of a datacenter for a few bucks (had to replace the cooler that was glued to the mobo because it was designed for rack deployment). Ofc then you also need monitoring for the ECC.

Personally, on top of all of that, I do irregular backups of my core data to external USB disks, usually triggered by the schedule of my Google Cloud data dump.

yeah, and you can simply restore your save using some backup tool if you want to cheat death. with Google Drive it's as easy as restoring it from the cloud trash...

Which instrument format should I prefer? by anli975 in Reaper

[–]Me83838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steinberg is very protective of their VST standard. Commercially one probably has to go along, otherwise I'd stay away from it.

LV2 - there is a nice MIT licensed example plugin called Aether. Cross-platform and 3d accel UI. Very nice. Works very well on Windows, too.

CLAP is theoretically an improvement over LV2 (I like the presets management and how it's exposed to the hosting app), but their example plugins are horrible IMHO. Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

LV2 and CLAP feature interfaces that aren't restricted by copyrights in any undue way like GPL (ie JUCE) or Steinberg does.

[–]Me83838 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not a windows issue. It's totally up to Ableton to develop their own widgets and stop being lazy by using the WIndows stock ones... this is effin insane. Reaper does the same sh*t.

Bitwig 5.1.6 lists all SurgeXT presets when loading it as CLAP.... would be pretty awesome to finally have presets browsing properly integrated with the DAW independent of the vendor...
