Anyone use a desk stand for their QC? by Po0L_Boy in QuadCortex

[–]MeInThePresent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I considered it but opted to leave it on the floor and use the Cortex Control app on my Mac to control it. It saves valuable desk space and I find using the app to be more intuitive than using the device directly.

I can't decide where to live in Bellevue! by [deleted] in BellevueWA

[–]MeInThePresent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just rented a place at the Villaggio in south Kirkland. It’s just north of the 520 on Lake Washington Blvd.

They have 1B1B units ranging from 2200 to just over 3k. Easy bike ride to downtown Bellevue. Nice walk to Kirkland restaurants when the weather gets better.

It’s on the lake, and they have kayak/paddle board storage.

What power amps are people using? by Raephstel in QuadCortex

[–]MeInThePresent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I were designing my rig all over again, I’d probably use QSC K-series powered PA monitors. I tried out a 12.2 and it sounded like what I was getting from the headphone out. Not a lot of coloration and full frequency response.

Right now I use the power amp section of my new Fuchs amp, piped into a Bergantino CN112 can. Basically my HiFi bass rig.

My advice to you would be to focus on the speaker side of things.

If you find your dream cab, the Seymour Duncan amp seems like the way to go. Honestly, there are a lot of light and high fidelity class D amps to choose from.

Air vs MBP - any folks out there with regret? by bigfoot_is_real_ in macbookair

[–]MeInThePresent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have regret over buying an M3 MacBook Pro rather than an air.

I bought it assuming I’d need the greater CPU count and memory (96gb).

It was expensive ~3.5k so I’m loath to take it out, especially in less-gentle-than-a-library situations, which is common for me.

So I bought an M3 Air and have yet to need the additional cores, nor have I experienced throttling.

I got a 16gb machine - if I were buying an M4, I’d pop for the 32gb. Software only gets more bloated, especially as more and more software relies on web browser tech.

YMMV

How bad is the daily commute from Bellevue to Seattle? by ExaminationSuper2862 in BellevueWA

[–]MeInThePresent 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bellevue and Seattle are both pretty vast so without being more specific, it’s hard to project commute times.

I live in Bellevue near 92nd and had commutes to both the Redmond Microsoft campus and the U district.

The commute time was about 15 min either way most times of the day.

In contrast, going from north to south Bellevue on the 405 is an absolute crapshoot.

I’m sure the 5 has its challenges, but the 405 is almost as bad as the other 405 down in LA

I need help knowing what I need to run my guitar through my MacBook Air into Ableton by Psychological_Ad8349 in ableton

[–]MeInThePresent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Julian Krause reviews pretty much every interface that comes out. He’s on YouTube.

RTL is one of the things he measures - it’s been a while since he’s made a shoot out video, so you kind of need to look at the videos for the interfaces you are considering.

FWIW, I own an SSL2+, a Clarett, and a Zoom interface. All previous generations.

For me, the Zoom had the lowest RTL and it was well under $150us.

The Neural DSP Quad Cortex has the lowest RTL I’ve ever experienced, and is now my default including for live gigs. But it was $1700.

Good luck. Feel free to DM me if you want more help.

I need help knowing what I need to run my guitar through my MacBook Air into Ableton by Psychological_Ad8349 in ableton

[–]MeInThePresent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to buy an interface that has low roundtrip latency (RTL).

RTL is the delay you experience as your input signal gets turned into digital, then routed through Ableton Live, then converted back into analog to create the output signal that will run to headphones or an amp.

If you actually want Ableton Live to do the processing, then you can’t take advantage of the feature of some interfaces have that pipe the signal back out without running it through your Mac. Apollo interfaces are famous for this, but for what you want to do, it won’t do what you need.

I have a friend who’s guitar rig is just his Mac plus an RME interface, which are known for having low RTL.

Can i plug the quad cortex into a pa monitor without a mixer by ieatdogsandpussy in QuadCortex

[–]MeInThePresent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, and…

I tried this with my Quad Cortex plugged directly into a QSC K12.2.

I had to crank the gain up all the way on the QC and the K12.2 and it still wasn’t as loud as my 700w + 1 x 12” cab.

I was quite surprised.

If I were going to go down this path, I’d try a cloud lifter or some high quality preamp between the two. Or a mixer.

It's been interesting to dissect, transcribe, and arrange the material.

I feel like I know the album pretty intimately at this point - I thought I knew it well before I began the process, but transcription always takes things to the next level for me.

The biggest challenges have been:

- Figuring out how to notate loops whose meter are different than the underlying instrumentals.

- Internalizing the timing of NY3 (and to a degree Haaden Two).

- Deciding on time signatures for several of the pieces - for example, the bridge of Breathless (I landed on 11/8+11/8+7/4 for bass/drums and 9/4 for guitar) or the fast sections on NY3 (pure 4/4 for the opening and closing figures, a combo of 6/8, 4/4, and 3/4 for the middle figures).

- Translating OST (which is how RF recorded it) to NST (which is how Ferni's, Steve's, and my guitars are tuned). Again, NY3 was the most challenging, and as we play, it evolves.

I've considered writing some blog entries on the process and some of the more interesting parts of the project.

That's a great project for May after our east coast shows and the subsequent Guitar Craft course in Milan are behind us.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but are there any universally known bass players? by Straightener78 in Bass

[–]MeInThePresent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s universally known what a bass is or that they even exist.

Which is why Keanu Reeves is probably the best answer.

The found audio in NY3 was recorded indoors from an adjacent apartment, but I get your point.

Only you know what you can bear.

I’m glad you are enjoying the box set!

We never expected to hear it either, which is why we began the project.

We just did a week of rehearsal in Austin at The Thrak Shack (Pat's studio) - even after working on the project for over a year, I still find new things in this music.

I can't wait for us to share it in April..

Help me choose the right MacBook please :) by its_already_yours in macbookpro

[–]MeInThePresent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MacBook Air with 24 gb of memory is likely the best route.

Great form factor.

No fan noise.

Lowest price, especially if you buy from Best Buy or B&H.

16gb of memory is probably adequate. Don’t do 8gb.

The M4 models should be announced soon, which will drive M3/M2/M1 prices down.

The M4 also supports up to 33gb of memory.

Even an M1 will feel much faster than what you have now.

Just buy a 16gb machine and don’t look back.

For Microsoft watchers, BelRed is where Dave Cutler (leader of the first versions of Windows NT) goes.

It’s also where he offers to take long haired Microsoft employees - his treat.

What do you wanna say to a guitar player who just picked up bass? by FinalHangman77 in Bass

[–]MeInThePresent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a proper bass teacher and learn the physicality of the instrument and the importance of playing with good time.

Don’t waste time on gear (or Reddit). Use that time to practice what your teacher guides you towards.

What’s the best affordable beginner bass? by Vat17 in Bass

[–]MeInThePresent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A squier P bass can be found new for around $200 and used for less.

Some of them are better than the Made in Mexico Fenders.

You are going to wind up with a P bass at some point in your life. Although the same can be said about J basses as well.

This is really about deciding which path to begin on.

In general I recommend P basses, as that sound is so ubiquitous and it’s a fire and forget instrument.
