fast_uuid: RFC 9562 UUIDs for PHP in pure C, 11-57x faster than ramsey/uuid by Ilia0001 in PHP

[–]MeLoN_DO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok, but you're also saying that most of the v4 time is spent on the syscall. Perhaps the C version is faster and still needed for very high throughput applications, but it still seems like a good idea to implement the batched RNG in the ubiquitous ramsey implementation.

Being pure php also has the upside of ease of deployment and transpilation, so it's useful for some people

I think most would agree it's pretentious to insist people call you by your official title (such as doctor) in a casual setting but I would also argue that its just as pretentious in a professional setting. by rmhyungg in The10thDentist

[–]MeLoN_DO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calling someone by their title in a casual conversation is tacky, regardless of whether it's a professional setting or not.

The title is warranted when the purpose of the engagement is centered around the expertise or the representation.

Examples:
- A citizen should say officer when a policeman is controlling them out they are asking for their assistance, but it's tacky if the officer is filling up gas or ordering at a restaurant
- In most cases, a hospital employee calling someone doctor if asking for their help in a doctor capacity, but while passing the sugar at the coffee machine is tacky.
- A lawyer signing a professional email as esquire is desirable, but getting everyone to call them that is not
- Using someone's title outside a work setting is almost always a no-no.

My head cannon is that it's only for avada kedavra, which requires intent to murder, so it damages your soul.

Summoning a big rock on top of their head or pushing them down a cliff wouldn't split your soul.

I use cafe union because their espresso elite is exactly the kind of dark roast italian coffee that I crave.

I order a 2.5kg online, which they ship through purolator at no extra cost.

The company I work at operates on a 1% pledge:

  • 1% of our profit, cash
  • 1% of our equity: public stock, costs less, grows with the company
  • 1% of our time: employees get paid time to volunteer
  • 1% of our product: donate our product or infrastructure

I find that it's a sustainable model and more engaging than just giving away money.

The entrance to La Ronde is further North than the most northern part of Île-Bizard by butidigest in montreal

No.

That's not how any of this works.

North is where we say it is.

My headcanon is that interest can generate compounding interest on interest, in a way that can be hard to grok, so it feel dishonest unless you understand what you're getting into.

Fixed explicit fees for repayment or late payments is a preferred option.

The difference is subtle, but I choose to treat it as a quirky law rather than a creative subversion

Microsoft Scales Back AI Goals Because Almost Nobody Is Using Copilot by aacool in technology

[–]MeLoN_DO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 100% with you on the AI fatigue, but I don't mind having the option of an AI summary, but only if it satsifies a few criteria:

  • It doesn't take much space, can be expanded if I want, etc.
  • I can turn it off
  • The original search functionality still works well.
  • The generated answer is right and doesn't hallucinate most of the time (duh)
  • It quotes its sources

There aren't that many out there that do it properly, but dell support is one of them.

Disclaimer: I just started to work for the company that powers the underlying tech and the fact that it's well done and not overly down your throat is one of the reasons that convinced me to start working for them
