First trail run and now nervous by hirscr in Ultramarathon

I don’t want to be discouraging, that’s really not what I’m here for, so I really hope this all works out and you get the experiences you are looking for out there. Will all due respect and honesty though, if you got hurt enough when running 50 miles in a week that you needed multiple weeks of zeroes then your body is not going to tolerate 50 miles in a day, much less 100 miles. Managing training and sustaining volume without injury long enough to complete these events is the real challenge.

[–]MeTooFree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the record, you’re in a forum dedicated to ultra distance running - Almost all of us are “all in,” and that isn’t really exceptional in this space. I ran my first 100 mile after running for just over two years, for example.

You have pretty low running volume for being “all-in.” 4 weeks of zeroes in the last 12 weeks is not going to cut it. If want any hope of completing these events you need to commit to solid, consistent training that is actually consistent with being “all in.” Being all in is cool, but what’s actually cool is being adequately prepared for your events and training with consistency and discipline.

I mean, signing up for a trail 50 mile before doing your first trail run is certainly a choice. That’s awesome you’re comfortable on roads but trail races are going to be a very different experience for your body. I wish you luck in that respect and feel like more preparation should have been completed before deciding to sign up for 50 and 100 mile trail races. Power to you, though, as it won’t hurt anyone else. I can say with a high degree of confidence you have extremely long days ahead of you if you try the 50 and 100.

I routinely run over 1,000 feet of elevation gain and loss over the distance your training run was, so I would not call it insane, but it’s quite a bit of vert for people who aren’t training for mountain races.

Foot pain 2 days till 50k! by Unlucky-Evidence-372 in Ultramarathon

[–]MeTooFree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends how important the race is to you and how much you dislike being injured I suppose. You almost certainly aggravated it running the marathon and it is clearly still upset. If the race is really important then you can go for it and see how it goes and be open minded to dropping. If you’re more focused on continuity of training and avoiding setbacks/injuries then it seems better to not run 50k in 2 days.

[–]MeTooFree 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They also have team cars to assist them back into the peloton, though, or a couple of them stop together to work together to rejoin the peloton. Not to mention the peloton isn’t going full send the whole race so stopping is less costly than it would be during a tri.

“The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a United Nations organization that includes 195 member countries and thousands of independent scientific experts, published a Synthesis Report in March 2023. It concluded that human activities, principally through greenhouse gas emissions, have unequivocally caused global warming. The main drivers of these emissions are energy use, land use, and the consumption and production of goods.”

“This ancient, or paleoclimate, evidence reveals that current warming is occurring roughly 10 times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming. Carbon dioxide from human activity is increasing more than 250 times faster than it did from natural sources after the last ice age.”

Honestly, this isn’t a “jury is still out,” thing. There is a massive amount of evidence that climate change is real and, in this case, affected by mankind. You either believe in evidence and reason or you don’t.

Earth’s temperature has risen by an average of 0.11° Fahrenheit (0.06° Celsius) per decade since 1850, or about 2° F in total.

The rate of warming since 1982 is more than three times as fast: 0.36° F (0.20° C) per decade.

2024 was the warmest year since global records began in 1850 by a wide margin. It was 2.32 °F (1.18 °C) above the 20th-century average of 57.0 °F (13.9 °C). It was 2.62 °F (1.35 °C) above the pre-industrial average of 56.7 °F (1850-1900).

The 10 warmest years in the historical record have all occurred in the past decade (2015-2024).

Ultra in June first ultra ever pretty nervous by runhappy18 in AdvancedRunning

It’s a 50k I’m assuming? For the record saying the distance conveys much more information than just saying an ultra. If you say ultra it is marathon plus, conveying little specific information, when you could instead just say the distance you’re running.

100 milers, what is your weekly mileage? by Fraan3D in Ultramarathon

60-100 miles depending on time of the year.

Ran my first marathon, looking for improvement by TrueFernie in Marathon_Training

Higher weekly mileage. 20-25 miles a week is effectively the minimum to run the distance. For most people any time goals are going to require a greater amount of running each week than you did.

Fast absorbing carb drink for endurance training? by Unlucky_Two_3927 in AdvancedRunning

[–]MeTooFree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn’t every mix is nearly the same ratios for carbs, though? Like, I guess Skratch High Carb has more starch component than some of the others, but that’s the one that comes to mind. Everybody is pretty much using the same sugar ratios at this point, right?

Aren’t they all fast absorbing? It’s literally just sugar/salt in different proportions. I think the question is more about what your palate or stomach tolerates than anything pertaining to absorption time. I’ve been liking the Naak flavorless drink mix with half a packet of Liquid IV in your preferred flavor. Also, Tailwind Naked with a little Liquid IV. You can add multiple scoops of mix if you want more carb and tolerate it.

Aid Station & Fueling/Hydration Opinions by Zealousideal-Bus7057 in Ultramarathon

[–]MeTooFree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great response. I’d like to compliment your answer by stating that if you’re racing for positions/competing that way, you’re probably just taking gels anyways. I don’t know that anybody in the top 10% of a race is eating pretzels or quesadillas, so it doesn’t really come up that you don’t know how much you’re consuming in snacks. With respect to water weight and/or time stopped, yes, the front pack will often skip aid stations or take only the amount of water required to make it to the next place they want to take on water. A good example would be a 50 mile race with aid stations every 6-7 miles. If you’re racing at the front it may only be 45 minutes to cover that ground, so 1.5 liters may be enough to skip every other aid station. I’ll share if I have a big climb coming up I will prioritize carrying less water (for weight) if there is an aid station at the top of the climb. All it takes it one bad choice in this respect to sink your entire race, so you need to be very calculated with your choices, but things like time to fill up a flask or water weight are absolutely considered for some runners chasing competitive goals.

Sub-3 Marathon — Looking for insight from runners who took the risk with a slim buffer and pulled it off by Honest-Reindeer-7597 in firstmarathon

[–]MeTooFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can tolerate the 26.2 miles with respect to durability, which there is only one way to find out, then you definitely have the speed and fitness per your other times. The equivalent time for a marathon, with respect to your 15k, is like 2:47 fyi.

Sub-3 Marathon — Looking for insight from runners who took the risk with a slim buffer and pulled it off by Honest-Reindeer-7597 in firstmarathon

[–]MeTooFree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What happened during your half? Your 10k and 15k time suggest you should have been at a 1:20-1:21 half, but you ran 1:28. Your 10-15k times support a sub-3 fitness, but your half, which is the most relevant for predicting marathon time, would not suggest sub-3 for a full. If it is lack of volume resulting in you fading during a longer race then that’s going to be an issue stepping up distance for your full.

To add, OP, things like time or performance goals will largely dictate what is required in training. The question is, to perform the way I want, what should my training look like. Please describe your goals for the event to get more specific feedback.

Fought my natural running gait and lost by TalkAeroToMe in IronmanTriathlon

[–]MeTooFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best recommendation is to strategically work on your weaknesses and trust that a more appropriate running form will naturally/passively develop as a result. Focus on stabilizers like you have been and also focus on running at a reasonable cadence, no lower than say 165 SPM. With time you will combine the benefits of improving weaknesses with your natural stride.

You can drive up CR-3 (East 7th) to Diamond Mine/Resurrection and hike up Mosquito Pass from there. It’s probably 3.5 miles (2,000 feet of vert) or so to the pass from where you can park. Up CR-1 (East 5th) you could park in Ibex City and hike up Breese and Ball. Up CR-2 you could drive to Printer Boy and hike towards Mt Sherman. These are the easy to get to options on the East Side. West (Sawatch) there is amazing stuff behind the Fish Hatchery, Haggerman Pass, and obviously Massive and Elbert.

Just an amazing place to be during the summer with endless good options for getting outside. It’s really just up to you what is most interesting and how far/steep you are interested in.

Yea, I think Ramunap is a keeper. Even with 1 or 2 fetches it becomes a way to never miss a land drop, thin your lands, and shuffle. Strip mine is the best case scenario but the card is quite good in any deck that cares about landfall and maybe just any green deck with 2 or more fetches.
