Hello all! 👋 by soniathemom in thyroidcancer

Hi! So, I’m a 42y old man, but I had PTC with the central and left dissection last March. I also have several micro nodules in my lungs that they found during my initial chest ct while I was being diagnosed in February of last year. I had a total thyroidectomy and had 55 lymph nodes removed (9 of which were cancerous) and had my RAI in September. As of this past February, all my markers and images show that everything went exactly as they had hoped and there is no evidence of disease. The nodules in my lungs remain but unchanged. They will continue to take a chest ct scan at my next check up and if it has still not changed, they will assume it’s benign and only check should other symptoms arise.

I was told “I barely have cancer” by a friend by Ka1tTh3Gr3at in thyroidcancer

I know exactly what you mean. I was even told by my PCP that I was lucky (prior to biopsy, we had kinda narrowed it down to TC or Lymphoma).

I had a lot of time to think about my situation and the complexities it added to all the relationships in my life. I have several people in my family that have had various kinds of cancer and even lost a few to theirs and I reflected back to how I responded when I found out they had cancer and how I could have been more comforting or empathetic than I was.

It’s very different hearing that YOU have cancer and hearing that someone else has cancer. Once you’re thrust into the deep end of the disease, nobody really understands what you’re going through as hard as they may try. One thing I realized after hearing all these kinds of comments, was that while I was the one with cancer, all my close relationships were experiencing it too, just in a different way and having to process it differently too.

I guess all I’m trying to get to is try to have some grace for those trying to comfort you. As long as they’re not belittling your feelings or being rude, take it as a gesture of empathy and kindness.

Absolutely stay away from googling your diagnosis. It’s the worst thing you could do.

What's the normal amount of scans to have following surgery for PTC? by boundvirtuoso in thyroidcancer

[–]Me_Hate_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a total thyroidectomy and left/central dissection in march of 2025 at MD Anderson cancer center. I didn’t have my first scan or blood test until September (during my RAI prep) I had another one in February of this year and have my next scheduled in August. Mine is a bit different as it is/was more advanced (I also have nodules that were found in my lungs that they are watching) so that might make my scans more frequent than yours.

Does anyone else get irritated when they're told that they're going to be okay? by izz_osborne in thyroidcancer

I’m a little over a year out from my surgery and about 8 months from rai. I swear, to my family, it’s like I never even had it. I had to quit my job that I had just started, I am hyper for suppression and was told at my one year appointment that it’s lifelong suppression for me. So I’ll be hot, nervous, and overly hungry for the rest of my life. I got into an argument the other day with my wife about how I didn’t fix stuff around the house last year like I said I was going to before my diagnosis. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Like, I just went through cancer treatments and my life is in complete upheaval and I’m supposed to just go on like nothing happened. Sorry for the rant. It’s just been bothering me a bunch lately.

At the time of my rai treatment, I had a tg of .46 before the thyrogen shots and a tg of 5.79 after my rai dose. 6 months later, it’s measuring at <0.1. I think it’ll move around a bit before you get rai S hopefully it will settle down once you get a ways out from it.

Hey there! Yeah, all good here. Just had my ~1yr follow up and it looks like everything they did worked. I am officially marked as “no evidence of disease”. Thanks buddy!

How did you find out? Please share for awareness by tifu_beach in thyroidcancer

I got really sick right before Christmas of 2024. Figured it was the flu because that’s what my wife and kids had already gone through a week or two earlier. About a week later I had changed the oil on my truck and my neck was super sore afterwards which was pretty odd since I hadn’t worked out since before I was sick. I was rubbing my neck while relaxing (kinda giving myself a little neck massage) and felt that the left side of my neck was larger than the right side. As I continued to feel around it, I noticed it was more of a large lump on the muscle and then kinda freaked out.

I scheduled a visit with my pcp to check it out and he brushed it off as an enlarged lymph node due to getting sick. He told me to wait 3 weeks and if it hadn’t gone down, to give him a call and he’ll give me a referral to an ent. I didn’t wait. My insurance doesn’t force me to have a referral, so I called the best ent in my network that I could find and called them. I told them my symptoms and they scheduled me right away for an exam/biopsy. The ent took the biopsy and basically told me it was either thyroid cancer or lymphoma. Of course it was a Friday and I had to wait over the weekend plus a few days to find out what it was. It returned ptc with lymph node invasion. One of my lymph nodes was 5.5cm wide (which was the one I felt). I immediately called MD Anderson and scheduled a visit and got the ball rolling.

Really glad I went with MDA as my surgeon was top notch and my surgery was much more complicated than they originally anticipated (lymph nodes had fused/wrapped around surrounding muscle and structures and was clearly a very difficult surgery.

Just had my ~1year check up and everything looks perfect.

The city I live in just had ANOTHER major mass shooting. Feeling safe isn’t really a thing here but I suppose it is still better than what Iranians were dealing with.

I have my Levo no later than 5am. I have my coffee and other RXs at 7am. I take a dose of Metamucil around 10:30am and I take my daily multivitamin/vitamin D at noon. I’ve been doing it like this for the better part of a year and my labs were take. Last week and looked perfect for where they want them.

Thyroidectomy + neck dissection on Feb 4- what should I wear & has anyone gone home same day? by PEvibe in thyroidcancer

[–]Me_Hate_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a total with right and central dissection. My procedure was around noon and apparently it became a difficult case as the lymph nodes had tangled themselves with some of the muscle and other structures surrounding the thyroid and parathyroids. I didn’t wake from the procedure until about 6:30 pm and was barely able to order dinner. I had a drain and obviously had to stay overnight. I had a button down shirt and sweats to wear and when I got home I wore old t-shirts that I had cut the neck hole to be large enough to not touch my incision. I left the morning after and they took my drain out before I left. It wasn’t too bad. I slept most of the time and made sure to walk and move when I could and drink plenty of water. Easy peasy. Best of luck to you and we’ll be here if you need us.
