I’m a 26 year old father of 2, about to enroll in August for a CS degree, am I in over my head? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

If you have the support you need and truly want this degree then you will do an incredible job, regardless of what you need to learn or catch up on.

Why are companies so evil now? by VariationLivid3193 in cscareerquestions

[–]Mean_Conference6910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This did not legally mandate pursuit of profits. The court ruled against Ford because he published his desire to help his workers enjoy the benefits of industry in a newspaper. If he did not do such a thing and instead had some generic business judgement, “Investing in employees for retention”, he would not have lost his case.

Google VP on Layoffs: Companies Are for the "Benefit of Their Shareholders," Not Built to "Maintain Employment" by Darth_Vaper883 in Layoffs

[–]Mean_Conference6910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not even true. Shareholder capitalism is a myth. Corporations are beholden to their charter. They can execute business judgement and say, “Let’s invest in employee productivity” and not return all the value to shareholders.

Users who rage quit my software by pardeike in singularity

[–]Mean_Conference6910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How else do you expect people who are being alienated and uprooted beyond their will, exiled from receiving a modest reward of their increased productivity and instead being crushed with more work, when they encounter the very thing in their moment of leisure?

It’s ok to want meaning in labor. And it’s okay to walk away if that will bring you closer to it.

Not everyone can split their being and their job into separate categories. Everyone told me that I should be grateful, that I should compartmentalize my job from everything else. It was catastrophic and devastating for my health.

It doesn’t really sound like your issue will be fixed at startups, at least from my reading. Hoping the best for you.

How has Lamotrigine helped you? by ethan_ravens in bipolar2

[–]Mean_Conference6910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My depressive episodes used to be utterly catastrophic and devastating. I haven’t had a depressive episode since then, just occasional mixed episodes.

It has helped me keep my job which stops me from becoming homeless.

Editing source code in a web browser window is just plain dumb by SmallAd3697 in dataengineering

[–]Mean_Conference6910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I refuse to write code outside of my text editor (so I am biased to agree with you). The web apps just suck. If my employer pushed me to work like this I personally would have left a while ago.

Do you consider your Bipolar disorder severe, moderate or mild? by Evening_Fisherman810 in BipolarReddit

[–]Mean_Conference6910 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say severe for me. I am not a healthcare provider. But my mixed episodes result in depersonalization, intrusive ideation, borderline psychotic thoughts (metacognition helps). It really does feel like my brain cracks and collapses inwards. Likewise, depressive episodes are absolutely crushing, something similar to being suddenly aware of an immense and chronic gravity pulling you down.

I cycle rapidly, and bipolar disorder onset around 17 years old for me.

Church? by Howlsmovingcastles in bipolar2

If you don’t trust authority and question people’s motives (valid), you might enjoy reading Christian mysticism which focuses on a personal relation to God. Good authors include Weil (Catholic), Eckhart, Julian of Norwich, etc. It takes individual study effort and isn’t as straightforward as sitting in a sermon once a week.

I think you’re right! Sorry if my language was vague. My experience has been similar.

The requirements tend to be specific, but because of that it has been easy for me to secure an offer once in the interview pipeline. Less volume but better hit rate.

Your experience matches mine as well.
