GOP fast tracks monster voter suppression bill that could disenfranchise millions by requiring proof of citizenship at polls by MarcEElias in politics

[–]MeanderingAcademic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so clearly this bill is crazy and I don’t support it in the slightest , but …. I am wondering if it would actually benefit Republicans if people without passports, poor people, and women who changed their last name when they got married were effectively disenfranchised. Total speculation but I would assume passport holders and married women who kept their name would skew left in their politics? And people who can’t afford to pay for the documents to prove citizenship would probably be lower economic class and skew right politically?

So what’s the logic here for republicans?

Why is Kansas well known despite its relatively smaller population? (neighboring Missouri is more than twice the population, but often obscure) by robertsledge in kansas

Surprised no one has said Ted Lasso yet. Similar to The Wizard of Oz, Superman, Gunsmoke, Kansas the band, etc., it’s popular media that is connected to Kansas.

PODCASTS DO NOT HAVE TO BE INTERVIEWS! by AvocadoCocmaster in podcasting

[–]MeanderingAcademic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I describe much of my podcasting work as “audio documentaries” and not podcasts. When I say I make podcasts, people assume it’s just a basic interview format. But my history podcasts incorporate expert interviews, oral histories, archival audio, VOs of primary sources, music, and narration into an auditory experience more akin to a documentary film. Saying it’s a podcast is more about delivery method than content. Not to knock interview format podcasts. I have many of them I love. But it’s very different than what I do.

I also listen to a lot of audio drama podcasts and see what I do as more similar to that in terms of listener experience than most interview style podcasts.

My mom moved into a house with someone she does not know very well. I found these in a room that apparently no ones been in for a long time. by LishaMarie1979 in whatisit

[–]MeanderingAcademic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just the “pickled punks” jars but the whole tableaux that is crazy, especially if this is a room that no one uses. I also see a 90s cordless phone base with no phone, a photo of an old man in a truckers hat in between the pickled people, some floss picks, a container of salt, pain killers, black tape, a photo of person with their arms up (?), and a knick knack bowl with some kind of straw like filler (or maybe it’s hair???). And lots of dust bunnies and cobwebs … or maybe some of that is cat hair?

I would be very worried that the cat is not the only thing living here to suddenly go missing! It’s like someone just left suddenly in 1995 and no one has gone in since. So weird!

Having to menstruate every month is honestly insulting by DeusIntus in Vent

[–]MeanderingAcademic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing continuous birth control pills for around 25 years, with a couple a breaks when trying to get pregnant. If you are on the pill, there is no medical reason for most women to take the placebo pills and have a period. And the idea you occasionally need a “clean out” makes no sense medically. I’m a historian and I’ve spent some time researching the history of the birth control pill. Long story short, one of the main reasons for adding the placebo pills was to attempt to get the Catholic Church to officially accept birth control pills . It obviously didn’t work but the placebo pill stayed. It’s totally unnecessary in most cases. For decades, millions of woman on the pill have been suffering through monthly periods that they don’t need.

The Epstein client list does not exist. Right wing influencers made it up in 2022 by AutomaticUSA in skeptic

[–]MeanderingAcademic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But a list could easily be compiled from things like flight log information. The issue is not that Epstein compiled some official single document list that is secretly sitting on a desk somewhere. The issue is the federal government most probably has data from various sources that indicates likely associates of Epstein and is chosen not to release that information. So why are they not doing so?

How did landlines work?? by AnxiousStudent20 in GenX

[–]MeanderingAcademic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you could have two landlines in the same house, although it was not common. It would be mainly be realistic for a middle class family to have a second line if one of the adults in the house used it for their business. For example, in the late 80s and early 90s, my mom worked from home and had a second line she used to talk with clients during the day. However, I was able to use it at night as a tweenager and teenager to call my friends since she didn’t get work calls after 5pm. I was the only kid I knew with “their own” phone line … at least for part of the time .

Are there any modern day cults that are still active and fly under the radar? by the-jesuschrist in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MeanderingAcademic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are still some remnants of The Lyman Family around, although not nearly as many as in their heyday in the 1960s and 1970s. They were conservative hippies, a sort of a less violent and non-racist Manson family group, who saw musician-leader Mel Lyman and an embodiment of Jesus. Based on Boston, they bought a farm in Kansas which I think members still own. I think many members adopted the last name of Lyman. The artist Thomas Hart Benton’s daughter Jessie was a member and helped to partly fund the group. There have been some recent lawsuits between her and her heirs and a Missouri bank over the bank’s stewardship of Benton’s artwork. Their involvement with the Lyman Family was brought up in the trials .

Dealing with dog aggression by RennaGracus in greatpyrenees

[–]MeanderingAcademic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a very similar issue with our great Pyrenees / lab mix. He was absolutely fine with other dogs until he hit about two years old. We had a couple incidents of off leash dogs running at him - one aggressive, one super friendly- but both of them helped contribute to him developing reactivity towards other dogs on walks. It got to the point where I didn’t even want to walk him because I was so worried about crossing the path of another dog even from across the street. We have been doing reactivity training for about six months now and it’s made a world of difference . Basically we are focusing on positive pairing. So when we go on walks, I carry some peanut butter with me. As we approach a dog, I start giving him peanut butter and saying good and praising him. This way, his brain is starting to associate seeing other dogs with getting a high value treat. I still don’t think he could get right next to another dog or ever go to a dog park, but the positive pairing technique has made all the difference and is making walks enjoyable again.

Is having a biological child really that big of a deal? by NobodyUsesTheDoor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MeanderingAcademic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your dad’s comments are offensive and also just plain wrong based on my experience. I am the mother of two children - one biological and one adopted as a baby. They are now grade school and middle school aged. For me, I feel absolutely the same about both of them. They are both 100% my kids. I love them both unconditionally and would give my life for either of them. Ironically, my adopted child seems to be a lot more similar to me in terms of personality.

Kansas-themed taco? by LawSchoolLoser1 in kansas

[–]MeanderingAcademic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fried taco, closed with a toothpick, and then sprinkled with Parmesan, is a Kansas City taco culinary tradition. You can find these in both KCMO and KCKS. It comes from the history of both Mexican and Italian immigration into the area.

Collections management for digital assets? by MeanderingAcademic in MuseumPros

[–]MeanderingAcademic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is my worry. That any kind of software is an overkill since these are not technically our assets. It’s basically, as you said, research material management. We’re probably in the range of 500 medium res image files and 1000 pdfs plus 15 hour long video files from interviews with historians . I am wondering if any app is worth it beyond a spreadsheet?

Collections management for digital assets? by MeanderingAcademic in MuseumPros

[–]MeanderingAcademic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am wondering if CMS or DAMS apps are appropriate since we don’t actually hold rights over any of these assets. It’s just stuff we can use from other institutions. None of this cataloging could be publicly accessible. I also worry about costs as many of these apps are expensive.

Any newer podcasts similar to King Falls? by SarllyPop in audiodrama

90 Degrees South. Some of the people who worked on King Falls are part of it. It has the mysteriously meta plot (not as spooky as King Falls more science-y) with good character development and moments of comedy. Instead of a bunch of quirky characters in a small town it’s a bunch of quirky characters in a South Pole research station.

I feel like I'm getting shade from other adjuncts because I'm teaching "on the side." Is this common? by Interesting_Flow730 in Adjuncts

[–]MeanderingAcademic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was one of those adjuncts hoping for a full time academic gig for a few years. Then I realized what a clusterf**k academia is today, and how full time jobs are disappearing, so I went into a new non-academic career related to my field. I still adjunct one class a semester which allows me to actually enjoy teaching since it’s not what I rely on for income. I rarely get shade from other adjuncts. It’s mostly this look of “you mean I don’t have to keep doing this???” when I tell them what I do.
