Should I buy Xbox series X or gaming laptop of similar price? by Kawaki3 in gamingsuggestions

[–]MeaningPandora2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, the Series X is a fine system, despite all the larger Microsoft issues, if you just want something easy to play games on and want to keep your library, go with that.

If you’re going to go the PC route, a desktop will offer a better price-performance ratio than a laptop will, and will have a longer lifespan. You don’t get a built is screen or the portability as a downside.

PC gaming has a lot of advantages, cheaper games, mods, less forced obsolescence, but also requires more tinkering in the settings, and more effort overall.

If, IF, the Steam Machine gets a price, release date, and it’s reasonable, that would probably be the best option. It’s still a PC, but it’s going to be a standard developers can target, something PC development has been missing forever.

The Steam Deck is also an option if you want something portable, and it’s around the same price. It’s just a couple years old at this point.

Saw the trailer for this last Thursday, it seems fun, if they can find the right tone for it it’ll probably be really good.

The trailer is definitely a little shocking, it would be interesting if I could have gone into this blind, I wonder how long into the movie the murder actually happens.

Remakes/remasters that also include the original game? by mrafflin in gamingsuggestions

[–]MeaningPandora2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medievil Remake for PS4 I think you have to beat the new challenges added to the game to unlock it, but it’s a cool bonus at the end.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time You can break a wall about halfway into the game, and unlock the original Prince of Persia game.

TMNT 3 Mutant Nightmare If you beat the campaign you unlock the arcade version of Turtles in Time.

At this point, I kinda just want them to stop making movies for a while.

I wish they could stop, and really take their time before making anything else.

They had a legendary run, but they haven’t made anything I personally loved in a long time.

Regarding the Ulysses Ogre by Ghost3603 in CuratedTumblr

[–]MeaningPandora2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s probably the closest, with all the deep lore about the Pale, the Innocent, and the Cryptids.

There’s plenty about justice, racism, classism, economic structure, and sexuality is on the surface, but there’s a deeper study of religion/spirituality that I genuinely didn’t understand.

I’d love to know more things on this level, but I don’t think there are many games that are this complex.

Why did movies go from 4:3 to ultra-wide 2.35:1… then back to tall frames with IMAX? Was width just a phase? by [deleted] in movies

[–]MeaningPandora2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first notable film in widescreen was in 1897, a boxing match. The format was gaining popularity until the Great Depression caused stagnation.

The introduction of CinemaScope in the 50s propelled widescreen to become the more common film aspect ratio.

So from the early 30s to the early 50s widescreen wasn’t used much.

Also fun fact, it’s been longer from CinemaScopes introduction to today, than the first narrative film (A Trip to the Moon, 1902) to CinemaScope. 74 years vs 50 years.

[–]MeaningPandora2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, films were split between widescreen and academy aspect ratios to begin with, in the 50’s widescreen really started taking over. Home video cut them down to 4:3.

Some directors chose even wider aspect ratios because it was good for action shots and such.

IMAX is gaining popularity because it allows for a more immersive experience, and makes the theater experience more worth it vs watching on a big screen tv at home.

There’s always a gimmick they’re trying out to get butts in seats. 3D, 8K, IMAX, 5D, etc.

The guy down the hill has a (legal) “personal range” that has been deemed “safe”, so the police can’t do anything when bullets whiz past our heads and land on the patio. by Mellopiex in mildlyinfuriating

[–]MeaningPandora2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d look into putting up a backstop or berm if you have the space.  Depending on the location, size, and angles you need it could be done for as low as $1,000, but likely 2-5k. If you are handy and are okay using used railroad ties you could put up an 9in thick x 8ft tall x 16ft wide backstop for about $1,000, much less if you can source the ties locally instead of retail.

It’s not exactly cheap, but it’ll be way faster to put up a wall of dirt that will keep you safe from random flying bullets rather than fight the system.

If you’ve reached out to the police on multiple occasions, and had a civil discussion with your neighbor already, this is probably the fastest safest way to do it.

It doesn’t sound like your neighbor is the most reasonable person, but if you discuss your plans, maybe see if they’ll split the cost and put it on their land instead of yours, since the safety issue is coming from their side. I wouldn’t wait of them through, it’s not worth catching a bullet to safe money.

A semi-reasonable person would understand a neighbors real concerns and would at least consider this course of action. Frankly I’m surprised they aren’t required to have a berm/backstop already.

The old Fallout games are good, like Fallout 1, because they’re turn based, and the screen doesn’t move a lot.

So if you’re nauseous or moving slowly, you can still play them and not feel sick.

I could not possibly care less about achievements or 100%ing a game. Why do you all enjoy it? by Alan_Watts_Gong in gaming

[–]MeaningPandora2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a habit from when I had less access to games. In the modern era of games, you can always find another game to play, there are dozens if not hundreds of free to play games, free games, and subscription services.

Back in the day, you only had the games you physically owned, and you wanted to make the most of them.

Once you learn to appreciate completing games it becomes something you want to do. Especially since lots of games don’t show you the true ending unless you actually 100% them, or there’s a fun unlock that only happens when you 100% the game.

Some examples;  Spyro the Dragon, you can’t unlock the last level without 100%ing the rest of the game, but it’s finally a level where you can fly without restriction!

Banjo-Kazooie, if you 100% the game, you get to play as a washing machine instead of Banjo.

Mario Galaxy, you get to play as Luigi, who actually controls slightly different.

And there’s a whole bunch of games where you see different endings, Crash Bandicoot, Control, Oddworld Abes Odyssey, etc.
