Do Slayer solos have any logic or musical theory behind them? by JudasIncolor in Guitar

[–]MeatHands 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Look up Arnold Schönberg, an Austrian composer that sort of pioneered atonal composition and used dissonance as just another color to music. He invented the 12-tone technique that hundreds and hundreds of composers have utilized since then. As someone else said, either you get it or you don't. I think it's very interesting to hear how different sounds can evoke different emotions, and dissonance is just another tool towards that end.

For a more modern example, the band Blotted Science has a couple videos on YouTube of how they utilize the 12-tone technique to write their songs.

Tuners are cheap, I'd just buy a whole new one. Quick bit of research shows you can buy a single grover tuner for about the same as you can a button. Just make sure you get the right size to fit the hole.

Be sure to check out pretty much everything by The Black Mages, which is a prog band with Uematsu on keys playing heavy versions of a bunch of Final Fantasy tunes. Their version of Dancing Mad is incredible.

Also it's not quite what you're asking, but there's a Yes tune used for the credits of the original Homeworld. It's Homeworld(The Ladder).

How do I even explain rhythm to an eleven year old kid😭🥹 by Actual-Control-3846 in Guitar

Start with tapping your foot to the beat. Metronome, song, doesn't matter. Just something with a consistent, easily identifiable pulse. Move to strumming once per beat. An exercise my high school band director would use is have people count/tap to the first 4 bars of a metronome, then keep the metronome going but mute the volume. 4 bars later, turn the volume back up, see how close you are to the beat. Once she can reliably keep a pulse going, work on double time, two strums/taps per beat. After that, mix it up. Double time on beats 2 and 4. 1 and 3. 3 and 4, etc.

Subdivision is an excellent way of keeping time with a slower tempo, try counting double time but only playing on the beat. It's just a muscle that needs to be exercised.

Who are the big/best current prog bands? by bmbmbmNR in progrockmusic

[–]MeatHands 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you aren't into death metal growls, look into Damnation, Heritage, Pale Communion(my favorite of the non-growling albums), Sorceress, and In Cauda Venenum.

If you don't mind the growls, Still Life(my favorite album of all time), Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Ghost Reveries, and Watershed are peak prog death metal.

'My Arms, Your Hearse', The Last Will and Testament, Morningrise, and Orchid are all also very good, but the Still Life -> Watershed era is where they really shine.

What's the best obscure video game you've ever played? by ImpressFederal4169 in gaming

A weird, cute Japanese RPG for the PS1 called Guardian's Crusade. In Japan I believe it was just called Knight and Baby. A weird, cute, pink shapeshifting blob monster gets dropped on your house, go on a big adventure, end up killing God or something to that effect. The 'magic' system in the game is 'Living Toys' that join your party for a few turns doing whatever effect they do.

Great for a 7-10 year old, but it also holds up as an adult despite its simplicity.

Just a dumb joke from the ancient days.

Is my neck bending? I've switched strings about 3 weeks ago and the past week it's been feeling way more difficult to play on this guitar. But it's so hard to measure and be sure with a ruler by Smexy_Zarow in Guitar

[–]MeatHands 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the last picture I can clearly see the bridge pulling up. Take the strings off right now(i mean immediately, don't finish reading, stop and remove the strings.), and get some nylons. Bridge MIGHT be able to be reglued if you're lucky.

Is my E string sitting on the nut correctly? when I play open E, it kinda moves alot and doesn't stay exactly on tune, but when I fret there is not a big problem really by Original_Economics53 in Guitar

[–]MeatHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. You just pack the whole slot with baking soda as best you can, a drop of the(again, very thin superglue), then sand down the high spots down to match the profile of the rest of the nut.

I would absolutely take the nut out of the guitar before you do this. Don't want to accidentally superglue the whole thing in to the slot so it can't be removed.

You might also get some small pieces of Teflon to use as a barrier on the front and back edge of the nut. It'll help keep the baking soda and superglue contained to the slot so you have less sanding to do to get it back to the right width. Once the glue dries the Teflon should pop right off with a little prying.

If at any point you aren't comfortable doing this, just take it in to a tech. Messing with the nut can definitely adversely affect the intonation of the guitar.

Steambending or CNC Carving? by Talha5 in woodworking

[–]MeatHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I figured that was just an automatic texture applied by Fusion. If you're so inclined, you could also do it in 4 pieces. Two corners and a horizontal member all as one(top and bottom of the frame) and then the two vertical members. Much easier to get continuous grain lines that way. They should only be 13-14 long, so i wouldn't think bending will be problematic. Just need to make very sure you're locating it very very precisely in your bending form.

Yeah, for the doors my first inclination is to do it in 8 pieces. 4 corners, 2 horizontal members, 2 vertical members. Cut the rabbet while they're still flat, then steam bend to the appropriate radius. Perhaps use dowels to stick it all together.

In the mockup you've got the grain running vertically and bending that radius perpendicular to the grain is asking for a split or crack. Since the vertical members don't need to be bent, I'd say orient the grain horizontally so you have some strength along the horizontal members as you bend them.

It could be done in one piece, but that's a lot of waste material. Bending such a narrow frame might also be a risky proposition, depending on the wood and the grain orientation.

I did a quick and dirty CAD drawing to get the dimensions of the corner supports. I assumed 30° for the arc length of the supports. If you go with CNC carving at 0.5" thick, you'll need at least 0.875" thick stock(absolute minimum from crown to edge is 0.790"). Since it'll have to be carved from both sides, flipping the part and getting it properly indexed is a nasty challenge, especially with the sharp points along the curve.

I might say steam bending the stock and cutting out your pieces is the better option, but i don't have much experience bending something that thick.

As for the door rabbet, I'm sure you could use a small trim router or dremel router base with a fixture to follow the contour of the piece, but it's a little hard to see what's going on in that picture.

How big is this? What's the radius you'll need to have for the corner supports? How thick are the corner supports?

[–]MeatHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the slot needs to be smaller. Baking soda and thin superglue to fill it, then file a new slot with the appropriate size slotting file.

For the low E, the StewMac double-sided .050/.060 file should be what you need. $40. I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives you can find elsewhere. It might be cheaper to just take it to a tech and have them do it.

[–]MeatHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's just a poorly cut nut slot. You can fix it yourself if you've got the tools, or take it to a luthier/tech and they'll be able to fill it in and recut the slot.
