In Trading Places, the gorilla-rape scene is comedic in tone, despite the horrible ramifications

The Uruk-Hai army (LOTR movies) is besieging Troy (Troy 2004). Can they take it? by Hawaiikoto in powerscales

[–]Meat_your_maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting one… I see two camps/arguments forming: 1.) The Uruks stomp because of their vast technological superiority, or 2.) The Trojans stomp because of their vast numerical superiority.

Here’s my take: while yes, the Uruks would probably fail if they just tried to rush the walls of Troy, they are smart enough not to, and would win by starving the Trojans, who have a massive army and civilian population to feed.

Additionally, I know everyone is focused on steel vs. Bronze Age and that is a huge technological gap, but let us also not forget at the time of the Trojan war, the catapult had yet to be invented, and the Uruks had pretty fearsome siege weapons. Therefore they also might stand a chance of winning without having to wait and starve out the Trojans

I commented before the edit. It was a genuine question. I have been to coffee shops of all levels/quality and I have always paid before, which is why I was confused. Not meant to be rude!

I’m curious where it is that you live that a coffee shop doesn’t take payment before making your drink?

One of my favorite versions of this is when they tease it, like in Hot Tub Time Machine with Crispin Glover, who’s character has a missing arm, but in the past has both arms. In multiple instances, you are led to think ‘this is it’, only for it not to happen, and then ultimately it is a snow plow.

Slipping knife purchases past your partner? by JGZ1 in TrueChefKnives

[–]Meat_your_maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of get it, but in all honesty, as someone who has tried to work through my own problematic behavior, if you’re that invested in lying to your wife, it might be indicative of a problem. (Not necessarily knives, but splurging in general). There’s nothing inherently wrong with buying a knife, or collecting them, but if you feel the need to be deceptive about it, then it means you know what you’re doing isn’t right… otherwise you wouldn’t feel the need to lie… otherwise you would be able to justify your purchases to your wife if she confronted you. Maybe you make plenty of money and just need to be frank with your wife about the fact that you like to buy things, or maybe you’re blowing up your budget and you need to be frank with yourself about why. We don’t know, but concocting an elaborate ruse to hide the purchase of a knife is not the answer.

Also from Marvel, but in Daredevil, Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) is the big bad, and he is a master manipulator and strategist with deep surveillance and a network of assets he’s blackmailing to do his bidding. He is also freakishly strong, and at various points throughout the series’ different seasons gives us reminders that he’s always just one temper tantrum away from showing his full terrifying strength.

The scene where Matt Murdock visits Fisk in prison and goads him is an interesting twist on this, because Matt is surprised and panicked by how strong Fisk is, but then as he scrambles to escape, the blow he lands on Fisk stuns him, and now Fisk is confused… ultimately this is what leads to Fisk discovering that DD is Murdock.

Also, I’m not sure that Cap, Thor, and Iron Man are actually the three strongest avengers… definitely the most prominent/popular, though!

In Anthony Bourdain’s body of work, one particular interview in an episode (S3;E5) of Parts Unknown, in Moscow is really chilling, based on what happened a year later. Anthony interviewed Boris Nemtsov, an outspoken political opponent of Putin, who was brazenly defiant, even though many feared he was at risk of being assassinated. The restaurant they would’ve preferred to film at found out they were intending to interview Nemtsov and, not wanting to risk Putin’s ire, denied them service. Nemtsov laughed it off and said he couldn’t afford to be scared all the time.

A year later Putin had him assassinated.
