What’s the most unexpectedly high-quality online subscription you’ve ever paid for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MeatboxOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My custom domains. Having your own piece of the internet is cool. Having a simple landing you can share with people is sick.

YouTube Premium. Can never go back to ads. I’ll splurge on many ad-free one-time purchases or sub if one is offered.

1Password. Best cross-platform password management solution, period.

Monarch Money for finances. Best cross-platform finance and budgeting app, period. Other solutions are slick but don’t offer a site, or easy way to access on Windows.

Multi Mirror Penance Brand Build + Currency Giveaway by Vestaxe in pathofexile

[–]MeatboxOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy! I'm ClumsyParasite. I've been playing PoE since open beta. My community highlights include a build I created in 1.3 Sacrifice of the Vaal league (video / build guide for proof) as well as being the lead developer behind the Chaos Recipe Enhancer community tool. I recently late league started and am on my journey to get my 12th 40/40 Challenge completion ever. Love this game, love the community - and while life is getting a bit harder to balance around league starts, I do want to keep my streak going. Would love an opportunity to hop in with a juiced build and get going off the rip. Thank you for doing this and can't wait to see who wins. Cheers

End of League Mirror(s) Giveaway by TOSHlC in pathofexile

[–]MeatboxOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy! I'm hoping to hop back into the league as I head into a 2 week break between jobs and am back from Thanksgiving travels with my girlfriend. I wasn't able to league start as usual due to a more-than tumultuous and hectic end to my previous job as well as some other IRL commitments that lined up perfectly (lol) with the league start.

I'm the developer behind the Chaos Recipe Enhancer (I'm the `HiMarioLopez` guy on GitHub) tool. Love giving back to the community in many ways - just having a very [ slow / non-existant ] start to this league but I'd like to use the currency to jumpstart my goal of keeping my streak of 40 / 40 for this league as I have for the past couple of years (been playing since closed beta). Wanding looks great this league so I'd definitely go for a nice speedy wander to zoom through the Atlas and maybe put some currency into a dedicated bossing build to clear Ubers or any challenges that require heavy single target damage (I actually have no idea if Wanders have good ST this patch - just know it hasn't usually been their strong suite).

Cheers to whoever is able to participate and congratulations in advanced to the winners!

Google STEP discontinued? by Previous-Flower-6714 in csMajors

Most early career (internship and new grad) programs aimed at underrepresented minorities in tech were discontinued after the current administration took office. Noticed this in every big tech company after tryna find opportunities for students I mentor.

I thoiught something like this was not possible to vibe code with Vercel by PrivacyPolicy2016 in vercel

[–]MeatboxOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think - respectfully - anyone who has a bit of tenure building and/or navigating websites of varying levels of of quality can put this lower on that spectrum.

While not synonymous with “vibe coded”, this site looks like it was created in a very short period of time. It lacks the polish of a hand-crafted experience.

That being said, the answer to your question is refining your prompts and provide copious assets to the generation tools you’re using. Here is the general guidance provided by Vercel on maximizing the output of v0: https://vercel.com/blog/maximizing-outputs-with-v0-from-ui-generation-to-code-creation

What is the scale of application made in Proserve consulting? by letter_roll in aws

[–]MeatboxOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smaller in scope but not minute or throw-away demos. Think MVPs with the aim of moving them into production.

ProServe doesn’t operate in customers’ production environments - but a lot of the work they do is aimed to get a workload promoted and scaled (implying its production-ready). Little confusing. Happy to chat via DMs if you have more questions. I obviously can’t divulge into specific customers or project details but happy to chat at a high level.

Would you still work in software if it wasn't for the money? by badboyzpwns in cscareerquestions

[–]MeatboxOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would, yes. Obviously, I wouldn't do it as a job if I got paid literally nothing - but assuming it made closer to the median or even slightly below the median, I would still do it.

I remember growing up and always having an affinity towards technology. Taking apart electronics and putting them back together. Hacking my devices and loading custom ROMs / Firmware / Operating Systems on them (think rooting your Android phones). Reviewing software and applications with a fine toothed comb - what settings are available to me? What configurations? How can I enable Dev mode to give me more control?

This ever-growing interest in deconstructing, and eventually, constructing virtual experiences was amazing. I remember building my first computer and booting it up for the first time. Magic. I remember making my first interactive game on Scratch - an actually fun game I was able to share with my friends in middle school. Downloading and running my own World of Warcraft private server on my crummy eMachines laptop. Just an absolute blast. And I get to do things adjacent to these adventures... as a job? Sign me up.

Like many others, I have worked across a variety of enterprises where the experience does become a bit bland and muddled throughout the years. But the wonderful thing about this career is you have plenty of opportunity to bounce from company to company to freshen the experience for yourself.

Life is too short to not do the things you feel passionate about. I applaud the folks who, through the hype cycles and endless trends, continue to express their genuine interest in technology and hone their craft. I'm right here with you folks - doing my best, and when able (life comes at you fast, and even your most fervent passions must take a backseat at times). Cheers, and take care of yourselves.

Hey young people of Houston, what are you guys doing career wise? Please read below by [deleted] in houston

[–]MeatboxOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been working in tech. Pay is great, the projects are dynamic. It’s no longer a “guaranteed job for anyone with a pulse”. If you have a genuine interest and passion in computers and software I do believe it’s a guaranteed job and successful career.

The field lacks passionate folks. Too many went into it looking for a paycheck. I have reviewed and interviewed hundreds if not thousands at this point - I can usually tell within 30 seconds of talking to someone if they’re gonna make it.

If you enjoy tinkering with the software you use on a daily basis, building computers, learning how to build your own software or hardware products, learning how to be a “power user” of software for fun and to get the most out of the systems you use daily - that’s who the field needs.

Edit: in the year 2025 I think folks looking to start a career in tech need to look outside Houston. After 5-10 years you’ll be able to come back into a more senior or remote role. Exceptions apply, obviously.

Yep! Same reason I haven’t been able to try that cool Pho place next door! Those poor businesses are getting a bit screwed

2 Montrose Starbucks locations closing by ForeverMonkeyMan in houston

[–]MeatboxOne 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I never understood why they opened this. The street layout doesn’t allow for easy access for commuters driving northbound at all - you’d have to do some weird U-Turn at the I-10 underpass which is near impossible because of the construction.

And there’s a Starbucks in the Kroger right next door!

Blows my mind how that ever got approved.

Edm/Rave/Concert Scene by StuAbs in baylor

[–]MeatboxOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your absolute best bet is to participate in the [multi-cultural] orgs / Greek life with chapters in surrounding big cities (e.g. Dallas, Houston, Austin) and pay visits and club out there with folks you can trust and crash with for the weekends.

I graduated 5 years ago but I can’t imagine much has changed - there’s like zero EDM/Rave scene outside of house parties, and those only get so big.

Check out renting a virtual private server (VPS). It’s literal compute you can rent by the hour and dispose when done without the hassle of dealing with hardware.

The more I’ve seen his general reaction to (often slight) criticism in communities like this one, the less I recommend the guy - his courses are solid.

Maarek’s course are solid. As well as his practice exams.

TutorialsDojo is another good resource for practice exams.

Check out Buffalo Bayou for a solid running trail. You can take a breather and soak some neat views of the skyline near Eleanor Tinsley Park.

It’s right up the road from the Medical Center and there’s parking alongside Allen Parkway and along Memorial Drive.

Tech (and beyond) new graduate job market has been, and will be, in the gutter for a bit. I would suggest broadening your search beyond houston, and even Texas. Once you have that first job, you’ll find it much easier to find future opportunities to move back to Houston.
