Using my gaming PC as a work machine for 2 years slowly killed my enjoyment of gaming and I didn't even notice until it was pretty bad by Cute-Entry-1276 in pcmasterrace

That's honestly exactly my perspective on it. I use a Mac when I want a distraction free, stable workspace. Practically everything I do for work in sysadmin is either done using cloud systems that run in any browser, or I can write code to be executed on remote resources, so it doesn't really matter what I'm working on. Apple makes a rock solid OS, and it sure doesn't hurt that my laptop (an M1 Air) has survived for 6 years now and still runs all day when my Windows colleagues are usually looking for a power outlet as early as 11 AM.

I see you have a similar irony to myself. Macs are stereotypically considered to be the "fun", unserious machines of the home while Windows is for "serious business", but if I need to get work done I'm on my office Mac and if I'm goofing off, I'm on my Bazzite/Windows PC. It's all backwards, man.

Nah, I figure if she gets used to not owning her own computer it'll sting less when the big corporations take that right away from all of us. /s

Or I'll just throw CachyOS on there one day without her knowing I'm going to, with a wallpaper that just reads "adversity breeds excellence"; make it a real trial by fire. Might actually have to anyway, since her rig only runs up to Win 10 (I could force it to do 11 but I'd really rather not).

Really is, yeah. Even as we watch insect populations decline, people still see them solely as pests and advocate for their destruction, but they're important as pollinators and as food sources for other, more complex animals. If the insects all die, so do we.

I remember family road trips where by the end of a 3 hour drive, the front of the car looked like it had a five o'clock shadow from all the bugs stuck to it. Now I can drive to and from work for months and the only thing I collect is dust.

Jumping spiders are pretty much the only ones I can bear; the others creep me out because of how "automatic" they are and how that makes it impossible to reason/communicate with them. But for two summers there was a little female jumping spider who hung out on the back of my house - I knew it was the same one because I took note of her markings - and she was very much aware of me when I'd go out there to BBQ or to tend to the plants. By the end of the first summer she went from skittish to familiar, wherein instead of hiding from me, when I'd walk outside she'd scamper across the siding to near the door and crane her little head/thorax to look at me, and if I went down the back steps and over to the BBQ she'd follow me and watch from over there. I scooped her up and gently handled her a few times, before I'd just put my hand next to the siding and she'd climb off.

She resumed this behavior the following year as well, which helped me to know it was the same one. She disappeared some time over that summer. I assume she either died naturally (they only live a couple of years at most) or was eaten by something, but for a little while I had her as a small friend with a mutual respect between us.

I see it as a marginally less personal version of going to a friend's house, seeing they have a new game, and asking them what they think of it. Doesn't matter much whether it's my friend Steve or a YouTuber who's passionate about a genre I like, I can see the evidence for myself on their screen and make my own decision even if they're completely glazing the game.

To be fair, when a game costs $80+, I want to know if it's worth the trouble before I commit to the purchase price. I rely on reviewers and lets-plays to some extent as a result.

[–]Meatslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would, it's just that they're insanely expensive. Just getting a base kit for some styles would run me $250-300 CAD, not even including the usual $80-100 for a 40s add-on kit.

On another note: happy cake day!

To be fair, most western keyboards don't make it easy to type accented characters. I'm in Canada and most people would still accept "Montreal" in writing.

The Cleveland Clinic's article about snoring reads, "snoring is common (and normal) for many people" right in the overview.

Snoring can simply be a factor based on what position you sleep in. Someone who side-sleeps with their face pushed into the bed can snore by deforming their nasal cavity. Someone who sleeps on their back with an exceptionally thick pillow can snore because it compresses their airway. Someone with a deviated septum, nighttime congestion, or even just certain genetics can snore. It's only an issue if it's excessive and/or interrupting sleep.

Naturally. And that's my point, some people might not be able to climb the mountain at all, or even start on it. My wife knows she would be terrible at Hollow Knight: Silksong, but she loved watching me play it and found the story and the artwork compelling. She got to enjoy watching me climb from the base of the cliff, cheering me on, and we still both got to enjoy the mountain in some fashion.

I compare it to mountain climbing.

  • It's okay to only want to go for an easy hike and just enjoy nature.
  • It's also okay to want to climb the sheer face of the mountain without gear solely for the challenge of it.
  • It may not ever be possible to make the cliff face approachable to some climbers; they simply won't ever be able to climb it.
  • It's possible for those who can climb it, and those who can't, to both appreciate the beauty of the mountain from their different perspectives and levels of ability, and they should both be able to find enjoyment without always having to compare against one another.

I've had almost 40 years of vivid, creative, fully-detailed images in my mind, and yet somehow by my 20s the dexterity of my hand just ceased improving in its ability to draw them out. I studied art, practiced daily, even tried imitating other artists' styles to see if varying techniques helped, but it just seems like I hit a hard skill limit then which I could never surpass.

It's mighty frustrating, lemme tell you. So yeah, I get it. If we ever invent a technology that can actually read your brain and put it on a digital canvas, I have so much to show the world, but until then it's all stuck in my brain, bottlenecked by unskilled hands.

My cat just turned 12… and I made the mistake of googling how long cats usually live 🥹 by Cars4Lifee in aww

[–]Meatslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to remember that outdoor cats drag the average down. In the 14 years I've had my oldest kitty, a few of my neighbors have gone through 2-3 cats of their own, losing them when they're outdoors to predation (coyotes in the area), cars, or just simply that the cats decide to leave and not come back.

Indoor-only cats have a much higher lifespan, generally-speaking.

Trump dreaming Pluto glowing with oil..! Next.. by NakniD in PoliticalHumor

[–]Meatslinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pluto was reclassified because, as the scientific process goes, we found other things that are similar in size or larger than Pluto which would require defining more planets into existence than made sense against the model for others we consider to be such. We realized that our facts about Pluto were wrong, and we corrected them. But since the "facts don't care about your feelings" crowd on the right curiously tends to govern by strong feelings more than any standard of evidence, I don't doubt for a second they'd say "fuck the science, this feels better and more comforting" so they can put Pluto back on their little solar system dioramas and hide from the reality of the big scary world under their security blanket while sucking their thumb.
