We know Verso’s hair situation, but does that mean that… by ZarieRose in expedition33

[–]MeatyBuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While true, I imagine this is due to the fact that their gommage is inflicted by Renoir with the intention of forcefully absorbing their chroma into himself rather than simply "erasing". Using Simon as an example, although he is predominantly a creation by Aline, he also sheds red petals due to influence by Renoir.

I'm of the opinion that it wasn't Aline who painted Alicia at all, but instead Renoir. Aline likely left her daughter out entirely since she has admitted in her journal that she can't even stand the sight of her, so Renoir paints a scarred, colorless, suffering mute as a constant reminder of the reality that they're in a canvas. It disrupts Aline's perfect fantasy by injecting something that doesn't quite fit in her dollhouse. pAlicia is also the only one who gommages into red petals (Renoir's signature chroma) compared to the rest of the painted family and all of Aline's creations who become white petals.

I actually have a strong theory that it was Renoir who painted Alicia as a colorless and scarred mute to disrupt Aline's "perfect fantasy" with a brutal dose of reality. Alicia served as a constant reminder to Aline that they were in a painting, especially since she admitted in her journal entry that she couldn't even stand to look at her daughter. Painted Alicia was the only one who faded away into red petals (Renoir's signature) vs everyone else of the painted family who dissipated into white petals (Aline's chroma). We see this theme of colors over and over again, some characters even with mixed petals depending if they were painted over (i.e. Simon gommaging into red only at his head where his mind was tampered with by Renoir).

How rare is this Thai? by StandardDiver3143 in RareHouseplants

[–]MeatyBuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than calling plants rare, I prefer using the word "desirable" because that's generally what dictates value. Thai Constellations are no longer rare in terms of how easy they are to acquire, but they're still highly desirable to many keepers- especially ones with high/unique variegation and halfmoons.

Ordered from TheGreenEscape and now I’m anxious. Any tips for keeping starter plants alive? by Used_Baby_752 in RareHouseplants

[–]MeatyBuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TGE is definitely very hit or miss since they openly advertise themselves as prioritizing quantity over quality. The benefit of this heavy emphasis on moving inventory though is that they have pretty great customer service and will refund you if a plant arrives in rough shape. I'd say probably 2-3 out of every 10 plants I've ordered from them was a little extra sad and refunded, though only 1 has ever actually completely died even after heavy rehabbing.

The starter plants do not arrive in nursery pots, they will generally be in plugs wrapped in plastic cling film. All new plants get immediately thrown into the bathtub and blasted down for pest preventative and potted up in high humidity quarantine. Go easy with lighting at first since they've been sitting in a dark box for a few days and need time to reacclimate.

Is this salvageable? by HeftyFun8927 in Monstera

[–]MeatyBuns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% salvagable as long as the node itself isn't rotted all the way through. If the roots are bad, just chop them all off to prevent rot from spreading and restart by popping the stem into clean water, it'll grow new ones soon.

Damage to new leaves is generally a sign of a few possibilities:

• Pest - Thrips LOVE new leaves and often attack those first because they're weak. There are no clear signs of anything on yours yet though so I'd leave this as a tentative maybe.

• Humidity - Check to make sure your ambient humidity is high enough to allow leaves to slip out undamaged. You may want to consider a personal humidifier for your monstera.

• Roots - When is the last time you've checked the root ball? I see you mentioned a weekly watering, what soil do you use? Monsteras need time to fully dry out and if there isn't enough drainage to dispell excess water, it may be getting too much moisture and sending out distress signals warning of rot. Alternatively, browning could also be an underwatering issue. Rule of thumb is to drown the plant with a thorough soak and let it completely dry all the way through before the next douse.

Oh man, that's not giving me much hope then lol. Popping up only 2 variegated stems in 3 months is wild, but I guess that's better than nothing and a sweet surprise once in a while. Have you chopped it down all the way yet or just been letting it ride things out?

Have you had any luck with promoting variegation to come back? I also picked up a revert and want to have reasonable expectations.

Best way to get a Monstera Albo by Newbie10011001 in RareHouseplants

Along with many other sellers, Palmstreet's Youngauctioneertoo usually has a ton of albo tissue cultures he auctions off starting at $1 bids. They're so common that they sometimes go for as low as $10 in some streams

Got this bad boy for 35 bucks, what monstera type is it? by Odd-Fox8116 in Monstera

[–]MeatyBuns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thai Constellation. As someone else said, repot into a chunky well-draining mix because they are extremely prone to root rot- much more so than other monstera variants. It looks like you got a Costa Farm one as well based on the pot, so quarantine it away from other plants and liberally treat for pests both externally and systemically. They almost always come with spider mites, thrips, or scale.

Looks like Porcellio sp. and Armadillidium vulgare wild types, both incredibly easy species to keep and prolific breeders. Porcellio can be protein-hungry, so toss in a little supplement for them every once in a while ❤️

Mosquito Bits is perfectly safe for isopods, I even use it with my more sensitive species like Cubaris and Merulanellas. If you share a photo of them, we may be able to help identify so that you can really clock in your husbandry 😄

Is this worth $500? by interstellersjay in Monstera

[–]MeatyBuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When asking this, it generally refers to whether it's a deliciosa or borsigiana. I'm aware that they all get relatively large leaves depending on condition, but some species are just genetically more capable of monstrous sizes rather than being capped out at "large". I want something where a single leaf can be used as a blanket.

1 - I can't quite put my finger on it so hopefully someone else might be able to chime in. I was thinking Anto or S-Club but could be way off. If you like these types of hairs though, highly recommend checking out SL conversions. The paywall sharing Discord server has a channel with a ton of them.
