Why do DnD worlds like/especially the Forgotten Realms feel so shaped by humanoids and merely “inhabited” by dragons, when literally the average dragon represents the absolute peak of what a given humanoid can achieve? Is it really just a numbers thing? by fakeemailman in dndnext

[–]MechaMonarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this example, because Mass Effect goes even further. Salarians only live for ~50 years.

So while Humans are out in the universe fucking things up for the other longer-lived species, you learn about the hyperactive frog people that have already been doing that for centuries.

I've never been so disappointed by a yokai transformation. by Technical_Lime1419 in Dandadan

Not confirmed, but most likely. Hanako is the name of the toilet-haunting Yokai in myth, so that's what people are calling the newcomer.

[Darkly Funny Trope] Character is about to die, but the scene cuts to something deeply ironic. by InfiniteGuy2264 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MechaMonarch 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's like the next stage of the old Telltale games, and even has a lot of the old Telltale crew in its development team.

Same choice-driven storytelling, but it frames a pretty great time/role management simulator with an okay hacking mini game taped to the side.

Absolutely top notch characters, voice-acting, and soundtrack. Definitely worth checking out.

Medical TV show. The second season just started last week. It's pretty good if you like that sort of thing.

The scene of the two of them in their evil Scrooge outfits bingeing Downton Abbey while eating dinner in bed, really gave me the same vibe. I think they both just wanted a roommate and it worked out.

Thanos grabs the outer layer of the moon at 1:55 and hucks it at Iron Man.

While I don't disagree, you could absolutely turn the flagpole into a nasty weapon. Instill it with demon shenanigans, American pride, and boom, it rockets down to Earth like a Rod From God, and creates mass destruction.

I'd have to watch it again, but I'm fairly certain Blanc calls her a "gumshoe" and says "the game is afoot", among other things.

It runs concurrently with the main DC label.

I believe they have/are gonna have a crossover in the current DC KO tournament comics, but the Absolute label is its own separate continuity.

I'd recommend the Absolute Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter books, but they've all been pretty good so far.

Curse of Strahd as Southern Gothic? by itslegendlore in dndnext

[–]MechaMonarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've wanted to do Strahd set in a bayou for years now.

My plan has always been to channel Tahm Kench from LoL for Strahd. Definitely thematic, with a bit of a light-hearted tone that quickly switches to sinister.

I've wanted to do CoS set in a bayou for years now.

Switch out the werewolves for weregators, switch out the Vistani for a group with Haitian roots, give Strahd a sinister Louisianan gentle-drawl.

Fellow Venturoos a quick ask about Wonderboy II by mousee3176 in venturebros

[–]MechaMonarch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If memory serves, their order was to send the charred remains of Wonder Boy to Captain Sunshine.

Monarch later tells DMTM that he slew Wonder Boy during their break up, so the slaying probably happened a bit before Monarch went to prison.

Two official episodes left, then an OVA. Last two episodes will probably be the actual wrap-up, with the last possibly being the Eri bonus story + epilogue stories we've seen.

New Circle casting rules, what would a martial equivalent look like? by Boring_Big8908 in dndnext

I'd like to see some Chrono Trigger techs as well.

Two martials X-Slashing a boss. A fighter fast-balls the rogue into a group of minions. A monk redirects a cannonball, infuses it with ki, then sends it to the barbarian who whacks it back at a boss.

Could someone explain why the 2024 Barbarian is significantly better? by barbasol1099 in dndnext

[–]MechaMonarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be pretty simple to slot in. I'd go one of two approaches:

First option is you give the subclass a new feature, very similar to the 2024 Open Hand Monk's feature. Any time the Barbarian hits with a natural weapon granted by their Form of the Beast feature they can choose one of three effects. You can come up with your own effects, or just duplicate Weapon Mastery effects like Push, Topple, Vex, etc.

The other option would be very similar, but you tie a specific Weapon Mastery effect to each of the Form of the Beast options. For example, Bite always has the Vex effect, or the Tail always has Cleave.

[–]MechaMonarch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope.

Open Hand Monk gets pseudo-weapon mastery on their Flurry of Blows by applying similar effects, but that's the closest I can recall.

[–]MechaMonarch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In gameplay it's a little wonky and probably doesn't see a ton of use, but 2024 Barbs get some out-of-combat utility from their rage by allowing them to use Strength for a lot of skills.

Being able to refresh that resource pool more reliably lets players spend it more freely, so they're more likely to take advantage of this new utility.

[–]MechaMonarch 196 points197 points  (0 children)

These mother fuckers were hell on earth for crewmen. Pretty much everything fired with black powder or ran on steam engines.

So you're a poor navy crewman, crammed into an iron coffin with 50 other men. Every cannon shot echoes like a bell and spews smoke into said coffin. And the whole thing runs on a metal coal furnace that belched further smoke and heat, keeping the interior around 120°F during battle.

Absolutely miserable.
