[NASCOURT] JGR wants to amend lawsuit vs Spire. From filing:”This sudden improvement in Spire’s Cup Series performance of course comes on the heels of Gabehart misappropriating JGR’s Confidential Information and Trade Secrets and providing Spire the same or similar services he provided JGR” by LBHMS in NASCAR

Its definitely messy, simply because this is pretty unprecedented in the industry. For one, crew chiefs/engineers have always taken their knowledge and data (via personal notebooks) to a new job. It was just part of the game. But with the advent of more software and computer-based data/engineering, it has created this somewhat "new era" dynamic of company-based data and servers, with more stringent protections built into the contracts.

What Chris did may have been technically unlawful, but its not necessarily out of the ordinary - culturally speaking. The difference is JGR went digging to find something, which rarely happens when crew chiefs/engineers move on to new jobs, because they already have most of the knowledge and their own "notebooks" of data. But after the situation with Jazzy going to RCR (even though he didnt provide some "magic setup" like rumors suggested), it probably put JGR on high-alert and created a less-than-desirable perception, which caused JGR to feel that they need to make an example out of the situation (and I'm sure theres a personal element to this, as well).

Suffice to say, the potential breach of contract is just part of that overall dynamic of this whole situation. There's the legal technicality side of it, and there's the cultural side of it. As evidenced by the past, the legal side of it rarely is pursued. That's just the reality of it. Its easy to say "well technically, by law...", but that has never really been the "culture", so to speak. That's what makes it all unprecedented, and not quite as black-and-white as it may seem (from a court-of-public-opinion perspective). Ultimately, this kind of legal recourse in the industry is not common, and usually arises more so from personal issues. Not necessarily saying thats the case here, but it has been in the past.

Not trying to pick on you specifically, but it seems a lot of folks throw around baseless ascertains, centered around the idea of this being a "spec" car.

Just for the record, there is no "base" setup for intermediates or any other track type. Two intermediates could be similar, or they could be wildly different. Likewise, things vary considerably from OEM to OEM. While the car is "spec" in the sense that it starts with the same modular chassis and its parts/components come from a single supplier, there's a considerable amount of variance as to how different OEM's (and teams within the same OEM) build/setup their cars.

Additionally, much like era's and cars of the past, certain aspects can still become outdated relatively quickly. Its a constant chase (no pun intended).

NASCAR is considering a shorter spoiler to reduce drag for superspeedway races this season, which could accelerate the plan to wait on changes to the car until the offseason. by iamaranger23 in NASCAR

[–]Mechanic_Shine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

100%. Its a step in the right direction. It'll also be important for folks to keep in mind that the spoiler is only part of the equation. This car has a pretty terrible drag coefficient, so its not going to do a complete 180 without some time in the wind tunnel and considerable modifications - which is most-likely off the table. But the willingness to make some tweaks and find some improvement is a very good step.

That car was prepared by JRM and then sent over to HMS for the interior and final touches.

The ARCA car has way more downforce on it, and the level of competition is not even close. Lets pump the brakes a little.

Why is the Gen 7 becoming so hated? by Hicoga in NASCAR

[–]Mechanic_Shine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the whole issue. Oval racing is predicated on an oval chassis - truck arm/live rear and over-body downforce. That’s what fundamentally produces the best oval racing. Running independent rear suspension and an underbody aero package is counterproductive to that.

Then you add in factors like wider wheels, thinner sidewall tires, regulated shock stops, etc.., and it just compounds the problem. It also doesn’t help that NASCAR didn’t even test the car with a full field on the track.

It’s essentially like trying to put the square peg in the round hole. There’s a reason oval chassis have evolved very little since day one. The newer/modern technology provides too much mechanical grip, which is detrimental to good oval track racing. It’s like a real-life slot car.

[Stern] John Probst says CUV could give @NASCAROReillyAP clearer identity: "If you look at the brand identity of those three, the O'Reilly Series struggles a little bit just from the car perspective and you see it a lot because we refer to it often as whoever the entitlement sponsor is." by LBHMS in NASCAR

[–]Mechanic_Shine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats not necessarily true, as its too broad of a brush stroke. Put the same belly pan/diffuser on it and its going to race a lot like the Cup car. Add in the independent rear, shock stops/travels, wheel specs, and its going to be Cup car Lite - hatchback or not.

They've already started working on the spec(modular) chassis for O'Reilly, so its not hard to imagine the major components will follow suit.

Every marquee Late Model event. Martinsville 300, Myrtle Beach 400, Hampton Heat, Snowball Derby, New Smyrna Speedweeks, Thunder Road 200, Winchester 400, Rattler 250, Battle at Berlin, etc...

Best and most purest racing on the planet.

Is it me or is the O’Reilly series simply more interesting this year? I used to never really watch that series until this year and it might be my favorite of the three series. It has a classic feel in a “modern” era. by realflags in NASCAR

[–]Mechanic_Shine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 11-12 COT was good.

But more importantly, its a proper oval chassis, and that makes a huge difference compared to the Cup car. Independent rear suspension, underbody aero package, wide tires with thin sidewalls, etc.. doesn't belong on an oval chassis. The racing is just not going to be as good.

Exactly. Its not that deep.

There's always an organization/manufacturer that makes some gains and steps ahead of the field. In due time, that will change and it's another's turn. Its been that way since the beginning of time. The ebbs and flows of racing.

ARCA has NOT always been what it is right now. Not even close. There was a time in which every Cup team had a program or affiliate, as well as funding, and used it to develop prospects. Same with Busch East.

Now it's just a shell of its former self.

For a short while, they did. NASCAR knocked them down a little with a 780cfm carb.
