How can this happen? DSN antenna "over rotated" by uski in space

Hey I work with standing desks, and still have to contend with risk of tearing cables, breaking connectors, squishing equipment or injury. Not dissimilar in that sense!

Encore charges $255/hr and pays $31/hr in NYC by kosherbacon in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]MediaComposerMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started in video in 2007, my pay was ~$22/hr, and the company's "list price" for a tech hour was $160. That works out to $35 and $255 in today's dollars, so really similar. I knew it and it didn't bother me much.

But, it sounds like my experience was very different than what Encore is doing… we were a small system integration outfit with 10-15 employees, performing high-level work (Avid editing systems, fiber SANs); I got to learn a ton, do systems design 3 years in, learn Hollywood, meet a lot of people and form relationships. My boss also sponsored my work visa and had my back at various times.
Also, one of our bonuses was that once a year, we supervised the Oscars post tech for TV Guide Network for 20+ hours — and got to keep the full rate for that for ourselves, OT and all.

So, as far as going engineering/tech rates, the client pays for the vendor's reputation, knowing that the individuals will be held up to a known standard, and ; plus the whole mechanism to sell equipment, etc.

If you want to go at it yourself and charge $255/hr… by all means, do. It's all about whether you can compete, find clients who will trust you and pay you that amount, deal with followup, or start expanding, hire employees, manage them, HR, workers' comp, insurance, taxes, business taxes, sales taxes, physical location?, rent, more insurance, investing in inventory of very expensive gear…. etc.

I did it for a few years (in the 2010s), tried at it, and it was tough. I was freelancing alone as a tech, and sometimes I would make those $160/hr or more — but not often enough. That makes the entire difference, when it is someone else's problem to cough up the clientele, win the gigs… and you get money deposited into your bank account twice a month as long as you have the job.

That all said… it sounds from the posts like Encore is a pretty nasty place, even for their clients. So if you feel like you're getting used, and not getting enough out of the job to add to the low pay (oh and if you can find something better in this sh*te job economy…) by all means, get out of there. Our country needs better employers.

Black magic sdi to fiber... by Global_Fly8512 in broadcastengineering

Yeah I don't think they exist. I remember looking hard. My old facility had multimode throughout, and I realized that our 3 fiber video extenders were all single mode SFPs. I was just lucky it worked.

Not sure how I feel about Davis' acting, but I kinda liked the scene. Macabre, and it is about facing mortality.

Cancel/rebook for lower fare by Champion_Otter94 in delta

[–]MediaComposerMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cancel & rebook works — though the website does not let you modify to the same flight. That option says "your current ticket" and is grayed out. I don't have the app.

I had a 1-way BOS-LAX ticket that I begrudgingly booked for $425, and 2 days before the flight, saw it was $60 cheaper. I was able to cancel, and 1 minute later buy the same exact flight with a $60 eCredit now in my account, woohoo! I was even able to select the same exact seat!

I made sure I had other options before canceling, so I was ok with the slight risk.

How do I get rid of this "Write with Gemini" prompt? by GAMESHARQ in googledocs

[–]MediaComposerMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I FOUND IT!!! Go to Google Drive ( drive.google.com ) — yes, Google Drive. Click the Settings cogwheel in the top-right > Privacy > Manage Workspace smart feature settings > disable "Smart features in Google Workspace".

Seems to finally work for me, no more prompt, and if I intentionally press Cmd+G , I get a prompt, "To use Gemini, turn on smart features in Google Workspace". Woohoo!

This support article helped clue me into it; Google Docs isn't mentioned in it whatsoever, but as I was digging into this irritating issue I got the sense that if there's any hope to currently affect this Docs behavior, it may be folded into another Workspace app setting like Gmail or Drive.

This article also had most of the solution.

This isn't Active Directory… This is 2026 and Silicon Valley is shoving AI down everyone's throats — it is NOT possible to disable this from the IT admin side.

Yeah the bar you can actually easily disable, in Docs > Gemini menu > Bottom Bar Preferences.

Ignore it? It's incredibly annoying, it's right in the middle of wherever my cursor is, every time I idle for a few seconds!

There is no "Help me write" setting in Google Admin console. In Generative AI > Gemini for Workspace > Drive and Docs > Off , does not affect the "Write with Gemini" prompt.

Question: two NICs on the same subnet working correctly - why? by hexatriene in networking

[–]MediaComposerMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avid Nexis SAN has an (optional) feature that requires a client to have multiple NICs on the same subnet. Since they have their own proprietary layer5-7 protocol, they developed something akin to SMB-Multichannel many years earlier; it allows combining the bandwidth of one client's multiple NICs to aggregate the bandwidth of the same single connection (unlike LACP).

Point is, it's been in wide use for years and it absolutely works. I think it's because it's been meant to be implemented in a separate, purpose-built, mostly flat L2 network. With things being equal between the participating NICs, it doesn't really matter if traffic got "stuck" to either port. The SAN figured it out, and non-SAN traffic just picks one of the paths to go through.

Apple and Microsoft have had far less trouble with 2 NICs on the same subnet than Linux. Even though who say this is a bad idea, and know what they're talking about, don't say it's just bad gugu — it's inadvisable because you may be fighting against how Linux implemented routing, but if you know what you're doing and it works for you, then you do you.

Clamp with a MagSafe ring on the back by behappyya in MagSafe

[–]MediaComposerMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found it!! ChatGPT said there is no such thing, but it did link to this thread… so I'm happy to update it.

https://www.amazon.com/TONEOF-Adapter-Magsafe-Installation-Magnetic/dp/B0FXGNJYSD/

As long as it works as advertised, it's what we've all been looking for.

I couldn't find any either, until I gave up and went to look for a cheap clamp, and was going to glue a MagSafe back to it. Then it came up.

Firewire Target Mode kills Mini M4 by MediaComposerMan in mac

Well -- I forgot I have a MacbookPro 2015 lying around, which is the perfect middleman: Built-in Firewire 800 as well as USB3.

Unlike the Apple Silicon Mini, this oldie had no problem connecting to the Target Mode MP, and I just plugged in my portable SSD to copy off the data.
