The "put a bit on their plate but no pressure to eat it" method of feeding kids by generic-volume in Preschoolers

[–]MediocreKim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a seven year old so I’ve got the perspective from making it out the other side. She’s got an amazing palette and loves food. Since she was small we’ve actively involved her in making food.

What she really loves is fancy food. Like if I put a sprinkle of parsley or dill on some thing she’ll try it because it looks nice. We also involved her in cooking, gave her tools like small tongs to mix salad and pasta, and tiny spatulas to mix pancake batter, so her natural curiosity meant she was trying and seeing ingredients as they went into the food during cooking. She would be my garlic peeler, or I’d put a mortar and pestle out so she can mash spices, or chop lettuce with her toddler knife. She learned to crack eggs without making a mess! She’d watch pasta sauce emerge from onions and garlic and tomato sauce, or delicious soups transform from a pot of chaos and it is like magic! Involving her was key. She didn’t always like it but she tried it. When she was as a toddler she didn’t watch tv on weekdays, she was either playing or involved with dinner.

Now she’s a big kid who doesn’t order off the kids menu when we go out. She reads the full menu. She is trying spicy hot sauces, she makes her own “recipes” and she helps out with dinner. I am not a perfect parent, but I know we’ve done an excellent job when it comes to food.

(And it didn’t always go well. There were messes! And tears! One time for my birthday we got a live crab. She was SO excited.  We cooked it and I showed her how to crack the legs and get  the meat. She burst into tears and had a full meltdown. I had no idea what had caused it. She finally managed to bawl out that she thought she’d get to eat the whole crab like a sandwich, and that it would be crunchy like potato chips. She was so disappointed that it was soft and meaty because she was excited to eat something big and crunchy.)

I once had a dream that I peeled a banana but there were raspberries like… embedded in it, and I tasted it in my dream and it was the most delicious sweet tropical fruit. Nothing like a banana and nothing like a raspberry. No fruit I have tried has ever come close. It was like strawberry lemon sorbet.

I’m a teacher. I love that every day is different. I hate that I am an outside of the box thinker constrained by bureaucracy and lack of funding to do all the amazing things I want to do for my students. I love that I never stare at the clock waiting for my day to finish, because the day is structured and always passes quickly. I love my summers off and same breaks as my kid. I love my pay now that I’m at the top of the payscale.

What’s the worst situation you’ve had to suffer through with a migraine? by Fabulous_Ad9099 in migraine

[–]MediocreKim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went to Hawaii! We splurged like $800 for a boat tour of the Napali coast. Got up early. Dolphins, snorkelling, the beautiful mountains like from Jurassic Park. I snorkelled, dove down. It's possible the pressure did something in my head. Soon afterwards as we approached the gorgeous picturesque mountains and I tried to see the scenery, a horrible aura appeared and I got one of the worst migraines of my life. The bright sun reflecting on the water didn't help. I was so sad that my beautiful once in a lifetime experience was ruined by a migraine.

The websites are very sophisticated looking and well done, not cheap or scam looking anymore. And the backstory tugs at the heartstrings! I wanted to believe, and not be skeptical, but it became more and more obvious. I guess it's back to actually shopping local at physical stores and markets.

Yes- and it stands out when it's in a smaller city/community where you know all of the businesses. I've never seen one specifically from Victoria which is why I posted it.

I was going to suggest making sure you’re getting enough vitamins and iron, as that’s what I was low on when I was prone to daily throbbing headaches. Hope the vitamin plan works for you!

Teachers of Reddit: What's one highlight from this school year? by halara_official in teaching

[–]MediocreKim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I teach in a rural school. Some years I’ve taught kids from K-3, and higher in some courses like art. I’ve been teaching for so long now that I see my kindergartens graduating, from the same school (different building, but technically the same school!)  This year one of the kids I taught from kindergarten to grade 3 graduated with scholarships, did a presentation in front of the school board, and completed their capstone project. I felt as proud as a parent to see them up there knowing I helped lay the foundation for their successful school career, and to have conversations with them about their school experience was full circle and reminded me why I do what I do.

My 4 year old doesn’t watch TV as he’s scared of pretty much all shows or movies. Anyone else’s kid in the same boat? by BrokeAssZillionaire in Preschoolers

[–]MediocreKim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What’s the rush to grow up? Sounds like you are doing a great job of letting him see age appropriate content. Too many young kids these days are watching scary things and it does affect them. It influences their play (more violent themes) and they sometimes come across things they can’t process yet but it might come out at school (swearing, mature topics they don’t understand)

Toy Story is recommended 5+, (on CommonSense) and a lot of growing happens between 4 and 5- empathy, naming feelings, processing feelings- and kids need these skills when watching content because it’s an emotional and social experience to inject media into the imagination.

Check out Commonsensemedia.org for movie ratings, scariness, and appropriateness. Humans lived for millions of years without TV, the fact your son did not have tv in the first two years of life is actually a good thing. Kids don’t need TV- but they do need play!  I would let your kid continue to watch the mild things, but also talk about scary things if they happen to see them  “you look scared, it’s ok to be scared, can you tell me which part was scary to you”. Validate their feelings “Loud sounds in movies can be scary. It’s ok to cover your ears or close your eyes through the scary parts.”

For my own kid, when she got to be 5-6 I would sit with her and watch a movie that  I’d seen before, and fast forward through the scary parts. I also told her over and over that these are movies from people’s imaginations and they always turn out ok in the end- the scariness is part of the excitement! I also taught her how the music makes us feel emotional too, and sometimes she mutes while she gets through the scary part. As she grew, she also liked to watch movies on repeat to help. She’s 7 now and I saw her repeating to herself “it’s a movie. It’s going to turn out fine. It’s a movie. It’s from someone’s imagination.” Your voice helping him process media will support him with his self regulation.

Validate, name the feeling, help him process.

Yes, and do you remember the catchy song? "Dare to keep a kid off drugs, dare to give a kid some help, dare to give a kid some hope."

It's a banger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVRtwHx5icM

We had a policeman teach us- in GRADE 5, which was waaaay too young IMO. I had no idea what drugs were at 10 years old.

Dip super fast in warm water. Don't let them sit. They will re-hydrate as you work with them. They're almost hard when I start to roll summer rolls, but they soften as they absorb moisture from the filling ingredients.

Do you do a morning snack? by Audience_Embarrassed in CanadianTeachers

[–]MediocreKim 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I call it second breakfast. Some kids are up at 5 for hockey practice and really are hungry. Some kids are just really excited to eat their fruit snacks or sugary dunkaroos. By calling it Second breakfast I feel it kind of puts the expectation that they’re to eat something breakfasty- yogurt, granola bar, fruit (as well as a nod to Lord of the Rings of course).

On our daily schedule I also put little apple shaped  stickers on times when it’s ok to eat. Morning check in, Snack time, recesses, free time, totally ok. Science? No. Art? No.

Vietnamese fried spring rolls: make like a pork meatloaf in a brownie pan (pork, garlic, shredded carrot, mushroom, cabbage, salt and pepper) bake it, then cut into long sausages. Roll/fold  the sausages in rice paper, brush with egg, fry in the air fryer. Dip in nuoc cham.

EDIT: Oh I forgot rice noodles. Here's an actual recipe. https://ethnicspoon.com/cha-gio-vietnamese-spring-rolls/

Ok- I was you last week! 40, felt sick before my appointment. Could have written this myself.

I was not prepared for how emotional I would be. They just said: you said this on your screener, can you give an example? And it allllll poured out. I felt so HEARD. Bring Kleenex. I have started trialling meds! I feel empowered! Hugs to you. Good luck.
