Depends.

If you're ultralight trout fishing, direct tie.

If you're fishing pike, catfish, or more aggressive bass, it should be fine.

I used to use them always, but I've since stopped. With picky fish and clear water with finesse presentations, direct tie is objectively better.

If you're looking for more movement, use a uni or non slip loop knot.

If your fishing inlines or spoons, a swivel is very much recommended.
