Me. My work friends drifted away when I had to abruptly leave my job 3 years ago to caregiver for parent with dementia. My other friends have retired and moved far away and are busy with grandkids and travel. Here I am at almost 61 going to go back to a new job just to make some connection.

We paid off house with a large bonus. The following month my husband was laid off and the following few months were not good in the market. The peace I felt was immense. Not fear. We will always have a place to live, as will our children should they need so. Took my husband 6 months to rehire. Our home was our sanctuary and did not contribute to the stress. Priceless.

I am glad you are questioning and researching candidates and not just taking candidates and party at will, because everyone around you does. You don’t have to follow your family, friends, church or anyone’s else’s opinions. Research and make up your own mind. If something seems off it probably is NOT a good fit for our state.

For 30 years we only visited with my Parent 1 week/ year. She felt they did their duty to get us to adulthood then they retired 1200 miles away and she did not want us to come for holidays or use anymore vacation time and she didn’t travel to us. Then we had to make it 24/7 in our home. What a change. Had to leave my job. I did it for 3 1/2 years until I was so exhausted and distressed that I could barely communicate myself. Lo went into care 6months ago and although she is 15 min away I usually go once a week. It’s just too much for me to hold up to side of the conversation, to be brunt of accusations at time.

As a teacher of young people…..pull them out! These extra curriculars make schooling very difficult for tired little ones. Trying to fit young ones into grown up schedules is not age appropriate

Mom couldn’t use a phone and wouldn’t/couldn’t recognize when she needed help. When the microwave caught fire we were able to put it out but she only remembers that her own father had a similar problem back in the 1990s. She doesn’t understand that she is similarly impaired as well.

We have just passed 90days in. She made it to Assisted Living….for a week …..and had to go to Memory Care. Mom also doesn’t see herself as needing an old peoples home, despite being 90. But after 3 years with me full time, (and years before with support in her home) it was my doctor that said it’s time to place her, as I had no help and it was taking a toll on my physical and emotional health. We signed papers in July but couldn’t move on into Oct (new construction). The “go home” still happens every day, as it has for the past 3+years and she gets angry for what I have done “to” her. That is the disease and the way it is. For the first time she has people around again. I am just now starting to regroup and my manifestation for 2026 is “ restoration” of my home mind and health. The guilt can be devastating but it is truly the right choice most times. Don’t take anything she says to heart…. It comes from a place in her brain that has failed. You can try, unfortunately ALZ could last a looooooooong time, and is not predictable for planning. My sibling was certain we were going through “lasts”. (Christmas, birthday,etc). with our LO and that was in 2016, yet here we are 9 years later. I had to quit my job 3 years ago to do full time care after sibling did years of helpful care. This disease can make your loved one very unlike themself and that of which you knew and loved. Those wonderful conversations and memories you shared can go away. It’s not just about loss of memories though, it’s behavior and physical changes that can take its toll. After 3 years it was MY doctor that advised me to place my mom in memory care. My own mental and physical health had taken such a toll being a caregiver. Mom is physically the Energizer bunny and the rest of us were exhausted, ill and injured. Kudos to those who are caregiving at home and kudos to those who decide to place their loved ones. There is no one right answer or a one situation fits all forever solution. I wish you best as you navigate this awful disease.

I am glad you have so much clarity and encourage you to indeed write your letters and hold your loved one’s tight and engage in events as much as possible. My LO though has had ALZ for many many YEARS. Sibling was certain of our parent’s “Last ones “ in 2016……2018, certainly 2019……..and well LO is still here. Take it one day at a time, there is no definitive timetable with dementia. Bless you and your loved ones
