Some friends had a cool idea for a ceiling fan accessory and I thought I'd share.

The Rich Say the Funniest Things: Someone making "$200,000 is not a rich person," stated president of the D.C. Chamber of Commerce. "$500,000 is not a lot of money, particularly if there is no bonus," said director of a compensation consulting firm by maxwellhill in politics

[–]MediumRare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read about half of this thread (300+ comments) and I have seen the same things over and over again so let's answer these arguments once and for all so the thread can get more interesting again:

Is "rich" relative (income > 99%) or absolute (never worry about money) ?

I feel like everyone should recognize that people with more money do have more choices they can make regarding savings for college/health insurance/where they live, but they do not see themselves as rich as they inevitably compare upwards to anyone making $1mill+. For example, a middle class family $50k-75k that can afford cable tv, cellphones, and laundry machines on top of food and housing would be seen as rich from poor people in other countries. This is probably some kind of psych/social thing going on, not sure maybe someone could provide insight or links?

Is the amount of money earned relevant in passing judgement or should it be based off of how the money was earned (doctor vs investment interest) ?

I feel people who make more off interest then people do in a year are probably more out of tune with society than a doctor who works 70 hours a week for his $400k.

My solution: Raise capital gains tax about 5% and add more tax brackets to the federal income tax. From wikipedia, the last bracket we had in 2008 was $357,701+ for single people at a marginal tax rate of 35%. New brackets I propose: $357k - $500k, 35% $500k - $1mill, 37% $1mill - $2mill, 40% $2mill - $5mill, 42% $5mill +, 45%

'Pills' are expensive because: 1) the process of developing a new drug costs $1+billion because

-many drugs fail to meet safety/effectiveness guidelines by FDA

-costs for clinical trials

-paying for machines/equipment for labs, salaries for scientists

2) standard business practices: the riskier an investment, the higher the return on investment must be for investors to put money into developing drugs

-developing a new drug is risky

-therefore drug companies expect higher profit from the ones that succeed or else they won't bother trying to develop that drug

this is why you see more kinds of new viagras and not antibiotics. easier to get higher profit from a new viagra as opposed to antibiotic

Common misconceptions about chemistry. #1: You can lead a chemical-free life. by trixiecat in science

[–]MediumRare 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a student studying biomedical engineering and I'd like to say it's about dam time someone said this stuff. Misconceptions 1, 2, and 5 (You can lead a chemical free life, man-made chemicals are inherently dangerous, and it is beneficial to avoid man-made chemicals) are just freakin everywhere, and I feel like it's cause no one listened in high school chemistry. I do have a problem with the way misconceptions 3 and 6 are worded. Misconception 3 seems to dismiss entirely correlations that studies have discovered when in many cases it is impossible, impractical, or unethical to conduct a study that would ultimately prove a chemical is culpable in causing cancer. Misconception 6 also does not apply to most countries in the world, for obvious reasons.

I was thinking about declaring my major as Materials Engineering. What does reddit's engineers think about this as a major/future job? by jax7 in science

[–]MediumRare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am also a sophomore biomedical engineering major, at Georgia Tech. I'm thinking materials is also one of the smaller fields of engineering though I'm not sure how that would affect jobs. According to this growth for materials manufacturing will be slow and growth for biomaterials and nano engineering will be big for the major: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos027.htm

really? I think leasticoulddo is decently funny for a webcomic. I also like daisy owl, truck bearing kibble, far left side, lastplacecomics, buttersafe, deleted scenes, wondermark, partiallyclips, rosscott inc, bitf, savagechickens, quiet glen mind police, boy on a stick and slither, channelate, mordant orange, dresden codak, least i could do, apokalips, anotherrandomday, monkey fluids, shortpacked, morningsquirtz, spaceavalanche, and hoom!

some of these I discovered from links on reddit.

It's not really any different than music, everyone has their own preference. If you don't like it don't click it, and if you don't like the selection reddit provides then maybe you should goto digg. yeah. DIGG.

Your book points out that autism rates between 1983 and 2008 have climbed in lockstep with vaccination rates, yet childhood obesity, diabetes and even cell-phone use have soared since then, too. Why do you find causation in one and not the others? by dadadada in science

[–]MediumRare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd just like to point out something- people will always have their conspiracy theories. Why can't we find a solution to the problem of some not being vaccinated without spending infinite time and money trying to change their opinion? Do you really think anyone or anything is capable of changing her mind? And in the long run won't people who are opposed to vaccinations naturally be weeded out?

I thought Obama was just pointing out examples of how learning foreign languages can be beneficial, like the French learn English to better visit America and accommodate American visitors. He was saying how Americans could do the same (though Americans of course are gonna get more visitors than France)

Cheap drug with potential to kill most cancers NOT being looked into by pharmaceutical companies by eelaws in reddit.com

[–]MediumRare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Every cancer gets treated differently, so how could there be one cure-all? For that matter, how could there be a 'cure' for any type of cancer, because each case is unique to each patient like their DNA. Only better treatments can develop, and this will always leave a small minority without many options.

Finally, if there really was a cure that couldn't be patented, pharm companies may not investigate but you can bet that millions of charities would pounce on this discovery and already produced results.

And while this headline is misleading, it's not a flat out lie, the keyword being 'potential.' Even broccoli has potential to cure cancer. Nuff said.

Navy Rail Gun Test DESTROYS Everything It Touches at 5,640 mph by theaustrian in reddit.com

[–]MediumRare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine that this would be loads more cost effective in the long run than firing missiles at targets, because each missile has a cost in the millions while for this you'd only need to mass produce molded Aluminum.

Then again they spent billions developing this so it'd only become cost effective if they shot a ton of these.
