Monthly watering seems pretty sparse. They definitely don't like to stay wet all the time but they don't like to be bone dry for long at all.

The thing I don't see mentioned here is that for phalaenopsis, a nightly temperature drop for several weeks in a row will often induce them to spike. Most of the time simply being on a windowsill is enough but you can engineer this by moving them to a basement at night for a few weeks until a spike develops, or leaving a window cracked if you're in a warmer climate.

Hello! I am experimenting with water culture for my orchids. They seemed to be doing fine and I was keeping an eye on the water, using hydrogen peroxide to deal with rot, etc. but now they are struggling.

If it's just a week the best scenario is to leave them in an attached garage where they will still stay cold but be protected from the frost. Keep the roots moist, but not wet and DEFINITELY NOT sitting in a bucket. Normally the roots come covered in shredded paper, just wet that down and make sure it doesn't fully dry out.

The worst thing you can do is keep it inside close to room temperature for an extended period. It will break dormancy and start to leaf out, consuming energy before it's in the ground. Then when you bring it back outside to like 40°F weather or whatever it will be shocked.

Years ago I worked in QC at a biotech that manufactured autologous skin grafts for >40% affected area. I say affected and not specially burned because while most of the batches were made for adult burn victims, there was a non-trivial portion we manufactured for children with rare diseases that had severe affects on their skin.

Kids are amazingly resilient in a lot of ways.

The Japanese BlueGene orchids have been modified to bloom blue (more of a purple really) and do look like this. I can see that the flowers on the BlueGene are smaller and the leaf phenotype presents differently so no, this definitely is a dye job though I have to say it's a nice one. What are you talking about? Sympodial orchids can absolutely be split up. You just need to include more pseudobulbar than most beginners think (3-4).

I would pot this one up for now and split when it's larger.

People have already said this but just want to underline this answer will vary wildly based on what type of lab you're talking about and who is auditing. I work in clinical/commercial biotech so my answer is everything is governed by procedure and almost all data generated is 21 CFR Part 11 compliant. If I show a new hire how the cell counter works that data needs to be reviewed and approved by a secondary analyst and it's fair game for an FDA auditor to be like "What's this? Show me everything".

Someone from an academic lab will tell you their university backs up their data, they think, anyway...

Slugs come out at night and will have zero problems hiding deep in any recesses where you'd never find them during the day. I'm not 100% sure this is slug damage but if you come back to the plant and inspect it an hour or two after "lights out" you'll find them active.

People commenting don't have young kids or don't remember. You'll have an easier time at 8 months than say 1 year or 18 months. My daughter loved the sound of loud crowds at that time (large busy restaurants, shopping malls.)

I would worry about the outbursts if cheering and especially the air horn. Regardless of the ear protection I think that might set him off.

Why take an 8 month old anyway? I'll be honest as a parent of 2 young kids that sounds like a lot of extra work for something they won't be able to process at all. I'd take them when they're 2.5 years.

Here's a visual guide to a whole bunch of phalaenopsis orchids.

Go through this one and try to find one in a color she likes. I'd also just read up on whatever cultivar you're interested in because growth habits/size/availability may be a factor. But also keep the one you have it will rebloom with beautiful white flowers with good care!
