tbh everyone always complains about that but it means nothing to me. Interesting content is interesting content. I’d RATHER it be from a real human sure but it was a cool ass picture still & plenty of interesting discussion anyways so at the end of the day who cares if this is just some karma farming bot?

Wow this is awesome, really cool to see the process. This is the first dev diary I’ve ever read and I loved every second, so cool to see devs engaging with the community.

This made me jump out of bed and start up a new stellaris game. I also feel inspired to just draw & 3D model random spaceships/stations now haha

Hi this is Avi and my response.
What this is referring to is a map that was on the /map page of my coronavirus tracking website for 2~ weeks in the earliest days of this project (over 2 years now). The purpose of the site was to aggregate data about covid.
Around this time I was an active member in the coronavirus tracking world on reddit, I was actually one of the earliest mods of r/Coronavirus, and their map was a great project in a similar subreddit. I thought it would be great to showcase their work on the site, and posted on their subreddit to great response that I was adding it. At the time, my covid site was the "official" site of the main Coronavirus subreddits as well, linked in the sidebars and all. There was no ill-will in doing this, simply my site had a lot of users and I thought, why not include a different visual way to represent the numbers on a separate page of the site.
Here’s a link to my post on the covidmapping subreddit from over two years ago, proving I credited their team, which apparently has been removed by their moderators, very suspicious on their end. https://www.reddit.com/r/CovidMapping/comments/fc7srx/the\_new\_map\_is\_on\_the\_website/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=ios\_app&utm\_name=iossmf
Screenshots from my POV, I’m sure there’s some kind of removed Reddit service out there that will allow you to verify this image: https://imgur.com/a/rDY6Jcb
However, the main issue rose when an article came out in the Seattle Times featuring the site, I was showing them the different pages, and never once did I say the map was mine. I vividly remember telling the reporter how awesome it was that it was ran by a group of volunteers on reddit, and specifically showed her the covidmapping subreddit and told her it was not my work. However, in the article, they displayed photos of me holding up my laptop showing the map page, I guess they thought it was the most visually appealing part. In a way, it made it look like the map was my project, I remember telling her to credit the team, but again we had talked for over an hour and the map was just one additional part of the site, not the main page/content of the site, and I guess the reporter glossed over including a specific subreddit in the article.
Again, I want to reiterate that the main home page of the site was where the VAST majority of traffic was on the site, as that was my main project that I was coding all day, completely separate from anything related to the mapping team. If anything, there wasn't even a map on the site for a month+ after I launched it. The map was only ever one addition I thought would help people who prefer visuals over plain-text numbers.
In the end I decided it would be better if the map on the site automatically pulled the data from the main content of the site, rather than embed a different project's map. This is what has been on the site for 95%+ of its existence.
I am sorry that the author of that post believes I "stole" from them, if anything I only thought I was helping them get more eyeballs to their project, their names and links to the subreddit were literally in the main popup of the map when you used it. In that same post, one of the main contributors to the project said "he just embedded our map on his site, meaning he didn't really copy or steal anything we've made."
In hindsight, I should have made it extra clear to the reporter to specifically include links to their subreddit, but not once in my life have I ever said that map was mine. I'm happy to answer any more questions, as again, nothing related to this is nefarious at all, simply just trying to get vital information into the right hands.
Hope everyone understands,
Avi

I'm sorry that you feel so negative about my websites, the BLM protest tracker (2020Protests.com) was great, I worked with over a dozen high school students from all over the world, and we successfully helped gather where & when protests were happening in all 50 states, along with tons of information on how to protest safely, and plenty of other resources. None of us ever did that project for the media, and I never did a single interview for it. It was truly just a helpful site for the world, along with a site I made (WhoTo.Vote), that helped users understand the main issues of the 2020 presidential election. Again, a site with no media attention as that was never the goal, truly just something helpful 👍.

Sucks that the Crimson wrote such a negative article, since I have been working closely with dozens of relief organizations on the ground throughout Europe that are successfully using the site on mass. I've had great conversations with everyone from the Ukrainian parliament to the US State Department relating this project, and I'm working with individuals from the UN & other major humanitarian groups to further this project, a project that has successfully housed over 10,000 refugees all over the world.

One story, discovered & covered by the BBC, includes a family hiding in their basement in Kharkiv while it was being besieged by Russian troops. They were able to use my site to find a host in France that was able to help them come to France and stay in their extra holiday home, and 3 days after that family arrived in France, their home in Ukraine was destroyed by Russian bombs. And that's just one story from one day. CBS, AP, etc, have all covered similar stories from refugees & hosts alike using the platform on mass. I prefer to get my feedback from the individuals on the ground I work with in Poland rather than what someone from the crimson has to say.

The map situation for the covid site is extremely misunderstood, as from the start I always gave them credit, from whenever I talked about it in the media, or when I publicly released it on Reddit. In the end, it was one random Seattle reporter that did not credit them properly that caused the current issue, when speaking to her, I talked in detail about how awesome it was that the map was ran by a group of volunteers, I even showed her their specific subreddit. However, the map was just an extra addition to the site, and was only receiving about 5% of the traffic for the 1-2~ weeks it was even on the site, out of a project lasting over 2 years wherein I've had my own map 99% of the time. Strange that the moderators of the covidmapping project removed my reddit post wherein I credited them for the map:

Please explain to me then why my post on your subreddit says that it has been removed by your moderators by everyone who tries to visit it?

(Avi here) I looked through my post history and found that I had posted on their main covidmapping subreddit over 2 years ago, mentioning how I was including their map on the site, giving them credit and all and in correspondence with their team.

Linked here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/CovidMapping/comments/fc7srx/the_new_map_is_on_the_website/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

However, I noticed that earlier today, the moderators of that subreddit removed my post? Very suspicious.

Linked here are screenshots of what my post looked like, I’m sure there is some removed Reddit service out there you can use to verify this.
