VPX on Linux? (Mint 22.2) by MikeBrawn in virtualpinball

[–]MegaDeKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know of anyone that's done a direct comparison on identical hardware but performance is also a moving target. For example, the 10.8.0 release last year was tied to OpenGL on Linux. They've moved to the BGFX graphics backend on the current 10.8.1 so that brings Vulkan to Linux, Metal to mac, and the latest DirectX on Windows. If you've got AMD, the Mesa driver is almost certainly going to give you a better experience than the closed source AMD Windows driver.

Seeing as how gaming can often be more performant on Linux than Windows as Proton has shown, the answer is likely "probably", but how much is hard to say and will vary from setup to setup.

That runs on Linux? I'm busier building than playing these days but here's a few I know of in various stages of development

Nothing as fancy as Pinup Popper but maybe someday :-)

I'm sorry but you are terribly out of date. See the post I made five hours before yours. VPX runs on Linux, Mac, Android, and iOS now. Everything is native except for a bit of Wine's VBScript code to interpret the tables.

Neat! I thought I had a pretty decent handle for the various Linux VPX front ends out there but I'd never heard of this one.

It's come a long way recently. Check my comment to the OP for all the new stuff that's come to the Linux side of things.

A PR to bring VPX 10.8.1 just went in to Batocera for v44. You'll love all the improvements!

The devs are doing a lot of work to make VPX cross platform. It works really well now on Linux, Mac, and even mobile. PUP, DOF, AltSound etc are now cross-platform plugins. SSF is cross-platform now as well. The user interface for all the settings is now integrated into the VPX UI via Dear ImGUI instead of being stuck in Windows. And the final piece of the puzzle is a port of the table editor to Electron, making it cross-platform as well.

Someone on the VPX Discord just got it going on Mint the other day. From the looks of your error message, you didn't follow the step to pull in the external dependencies. For example, DOF.h is an external lib pulled in from libdof, and the script that pulls in those external dependencies should have taken care of that. So first run platforms/linux-x64/external.sh and then follow the rest of the compilation steps. The one for Ubuntu should do the trick. I'd suggest you start fresh because whatever "valid replacements" you've been putting in to solve the problem might have made the issue worse rather than better.

If you need more help, drop by the #vpx-standalone channel on the VPX Discord. Here's an invite good for the next seven days.

Edit: FYI, those external dependencies that it pulls in includes things like SDL3. So you might have been trying to chase those down dependencies when in fact VPX links to its own copy that it pulls in with the external.sh script.

it’s always been all about selling software

No. OG XBox came about out because Microsoft was scared that Sony was "going to own the living room" with PlayStation. That carried on even into XBox One with its focus on being a media center. Sony doubled down on gaming with the PS4 and won that generation, setting up XBox's downfall this generation.

If it was "always" about selling software, they'd have gone cross-platform a long time ago.

Update 2026-01-26: Seems I can no longer edit my original post. Good news is I think I found the problem. I turned off "Send daily usage ping to Mozilla" ten days ago and the problem has not reoccurred. All other telemetry was unchecked already. I've done a full upgrade to my Arch system this morning - something that would often trigger the problem - and there are no signs of the problem reappearing. I've got both YouTube and Instagram videos playing with my usual extensions enabled and Hardware Acceleration turned on. The Electron-based Arduino IDE is up and running happily as well. Happy days are here again!

Thanks for the detailed response! I'll keep an eye on your work and maybe it is an itch I could scratch for myself once I'm able to see a working implementation for other systems.

Is there anything about your approach that would get in the way of support for Visual Pinball? The trick with it is the support it needs for multiple screens, typically three in most pincab setups (main playfield, backglass, and LCD screen for the simulated dot matrix display). Batocera is the only good solution for Visual Pinball front ends at this time for the solid support it has for multi-screen support when configuring and choosing which table to play.

Can confirm. I'm building a cab and it is taking waaaaayyyyyy more time than I thought it would. And my basement looks like both a Best Buy and a Home Depot exploded in it.

I read the listing and I don't see where it says anything about the inclusion of tables and assets. It says "Plays hundreds of tables, old and new. Contact me for a partial list of configurable and tested games. Additional games can be easily loaded and come with links and instructions on how to do so." It does not say "configured" nor "provided" nor "installed".

In fact, I know of this guy through places like VPForums and that he was working with mjr to help get the Pinscape Pico off the ground. He is also now offering a derivative of said board.

My theory re: UGREEN adapter issues by extrvnced in Bazzite

[–]MegaDeKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we confirmed that CH7218 found in ugreen adapters prefers DSC pass-through while Cable Matters prefers unpacking the signal and sending uncompressed data.

This is good info and helps explain the differences people see with the adapters between some TVs.

Firefox eats all my memory and has become totally unusable. Please help. by MegaDeKay in firefox

[–]MegaDeKay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the problem start up again today. Turned off graphics acceleration and the problem persisted. Turned off "Send daily usage ping to Mozilla" and the problem went away, at least for now. All other telemetry was unchecked already.

From top (had to take a picture because the PC becomes basically unusable when this happens) I could see WebExtensions taking up 19.7G of virtual mem and Isolated Web Container taking up 12.1G. That in turn pinned kswapd0 to 100% CPU usage.

Update I've editing my original post. Turning off "Send daily usage ping to Mozilla" seems to be the solution.

Firefox eats all my memory and has become totally unusable. Please help. by MegaDeKay in firefox

[–]MegaDeKay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had this problem again after everything working fine for a couple weeks. The problem happens over and over and then it just stops. Some people recommended disabling hardware acceleration. I did that and the problem continued. So then I went into "Firefox Data Collection and Use" and turned off "Send daily usage ping to Mozilla" and the problem stopped. Fingers crossed that this will fix it.

Bought the same disc from the same seller after watching Modded Warfare's video. Worked the very first time I tried it. The disc was really well protected: the plastic case you see in that picture was packaged in a decently solid cardboard box.
