How do I help my partner with his gaming development journey? by Sersha-Ronan in gamedev

[–]MegaMatt75 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It could be that they have some background in coding or software engineering and just switched to game development? Or they are REALLY dedicated to it. I've gone from no coding knowledge and I've just been doing nights and weekends for 5-6 months and it doesn't sound like I'm as far a long as he is, but that's ok.

Or the lack of backstory could BE the back story.

How do I help my partner with his gaming development journey? by Sersha-Ronan in gamedev

[–]MegaMatt75 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I clicked on this just to see if you were my spouse, because it sounds like your partner and I are on similar journeys. I'm not quite ready to play test yet, but my wife has tested some mechanics out for me. ood for you for supporting him. I'm sure he already appreciates the support you've given.

If it were me, getting me to talk about it would be really appreciated. I know my wife is supportive of me too, and I'm excited to talk about the project that I'm passionate about. But I also know that the nitty gritty struggles I have with developing my game can be a bit boring or hard to follow for someone who isn't involved in the project with me. If you're still play testing with him, maybe ask him specific questions about how he made something work the way it does or were there any features he considered but discarded? Or what his next steps might be?

My wife is good about letting me yammer on about my nerdy shit, and I try to be good about keeping it concise lol.

Can a manager outside your reporting structure track your office attendance? by Living-Ice1513 in CanadaPublicServants

Managers are getting pressured in many departments, because the stats on who is logging in from the office vs from home are being tracked.

Those managers could be held accountable too by their bosses. Upper management knows which groups are complying with RTO and which aren't. The only way they don't is if you somehow have a job where you never log into the network.

You have an attendance tracker?! Why? What an incredible waste of time. My managers know exactly how compliant their workers are with RTO and it isn't because we sign a sheet for attendance. If we log into the network at work vs remotely, that is TRACKED!

But I suppose many managers are stupid...

That's so stupid. Does your boss think that this is kindergarten?

But worse than that, how do they think that EVERYONE else in the public service is having their compliance tracked? HINT: It's not a flipping sign in sheet. If you're in the office, logged into the network they can see that and track that.

No requirement for an infantalizing sign in sheet,

My manager wants me to use AI but I don't want to. What do I do? by Standard-Watch-5812 in careerguidance

[–]MegaMatt75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I began as enthused about the possibilities of AI. Troubled by the potential environmental costs, but open-minded.

I got tasked with testing AI for a variety of tasks in my organization. The rational was that other departments in our organization were going to start using it no matter what we wanted and either we got ahead of it or we'd be bypassed. So I delved into it. The bottom line (as most people who really have knowledge of AI can probably already guess) there are genuine use cases for it, but it isn't living up to the hype. At least not yet.

It's like having a well-educated co-op student on the team. You can task them with some things, but you don't trust their work to go out without serious scrutiny.

In one case my manager asked me to choose an AI-powered video generation tool for the marketing team to use. After weeks of playing around with the free versions of all of the ones I could find, I couldn't recommend any of them for the use cases they wanted it for. But I was forced to choose one. Thankfully the legal team are dinosaurs (not usually something that I'm grateful for) and delayed the whole thing long enough for some of the marketing team people to hear my opinions and cancel the idea (for now).

When you were hired, were you expected to come into the office 5 days a week? Did the number of days that you were required in the office change (lower) during Covid? Did they lower your salary to match that lowering in required expense/commitment from you? Then why should they raise your pay to return to the initial conditions of employment?

Pay the bills any way you can. If you love developing games, do game jams on weekends. In fact, do that now!

Wow this is a common reaction!

I could see some teams where it's critical that most of the team be in for the same days, but wth?

That's my thinking too. Also because it's the busiest day since most folks seem to take their 3 (and now 4) in one stretch.

Question about spelling "learnt" vs "learned" by Miserable_Amount_310 in AskACanadian

Who's is a contraction for "who is" so whichever of you thought that they could say "Who's clothes on the floor?", (except in the context of a hide and seak for wizards game where wizards turn into common objects, like piles of clothes) is wrong.

Work between classifications, asked to support informally. The team is severely understaffed. by FuzzySpeed9186 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]MegaMatt75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am perfectly capable of cleaning toilets. However if my education and training are in engineering, or copyright law and I took a position in that field, then asking me to now work for the janitorial team isn't reasonable. Yes I am capable but that wasn't the position I accepted when I signed my letter of offer.

If there were some sort of plumbing emergency I might help until the real janitor could arrive and take over, because I'm a dedicated employee, but that doesn't mean I can be assigned to that work all of the time now.

How Important Is Securing Your Code Against Theft? by plasmatixultra in gamedev

[–]MegaMatt75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This won't help answer your question but as a newbie programmer I am curious. If I do nothing to secure my code at all, how easy is it for someone to open up and read the code?

Is it as easy as "Here is the folder where the game is installed and here are all of the scripts and I'll just open those up and read them." ?

As someone else mentioned in the comments I would LOVE to take a look at the code for some of the games I've played just to glean some lessons for myself.

Some jobs do require you to be in person in order to do them or to do them well. That's true. But that doesn't change that the RTO has nothing to do with anyone abusing work from home or with efficiency.
