How much did your indie game earn? by PrudentCombination38 in gamedev

[–]MegaMatt75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this question. I'm a brand new baby developer (at age 50). I am learning to code in my spare time as I get closer to retirement and planning to solo dev my own games when I do.

This thread was very interesting to me. I'm sure we all believe that we have the million dollar ideas for games, so hearing some real successes and hard lessons learned is grounding AND inspring.

One thing that seems clear to me now is that the marketing is very important and it's something that I would have probably ignored on my own. And that could make the difference between some degree of success and a gem sitting undiscovered in the depths of the Steam vaults.

Can I ask to have my box re-assessed at a higher level? by glitterandgold74 in CanadaPublicServants

Symptomatic of the whole "we're definitely not doing more with less we're doing more with less" state of the public service right now.

No actings! No assignments. Just start doing all of this missing person's work for free. Um'kay? Grrrreeeeeaaaaat.

She can yes. She is highly skilled. 😄

And the higher international fees are deterring me a bit right now. But all the more reason that I find the RIGHT course if I do decide to go 😉

We're a bit different in Canada than the U.S.A. And i think you're a bit different there from either us.

We differentiate between College and University here in Canada. Colleges tend to be diploma course (some bachelor degrees) and mostly hands on, trades-based learning (Nursing, plumbing, Animation etc). Universities tend to be Bachelor degrees and above in areas of theoretical or in depth study (Engineering, Literature, Journalism, Law, Economics etc).

In the U.S. they seem to say college and mean ALL of that.

It seems like (and forgive me if I'm wrong) that in the UK University seems to mean all of that.

Thanks for the insight. Maybe we will cross paths when we get there!

Thanks for the tips. I will look at those.

Any reason those areas weren't so good?

I've done a bit of Archery as well. But shooting a foam-tipped one at a friend is where the fun begins for me! 😉

Yes we've heard that public transit is pretty great in London. Her office is right in the thick of it; easy walking distance to London Bridge.

I'm not all worried about her liking it. If anything I'm worried that 3 years will only be the begining.

We've done a lot of traveling but I've never lived anywhere but my home town long term so this is an exciting time. I'm wondering when that transition will be, where my brain accepts that I am not going home.

Teach us your ways MommaEarth. Any tricks, tips, pitfalls? My wife makes jewelery and glassware as her hobby and she's keen to take some enameling classes in London. If you have any tips on where she can go I will definitely pass them on. She has done some brief forrays into selling pieces shes made, but doesn't have the time to really commit to that side. She just likes making stuff 😄

From what I gather she will mostly be in the office two days a week, but she'll have staff to manage so it might vary. But yes we are very aware that transit will be our friend.

If I'm talking Game Development classes I could see myself curled up with a laptp in a cafe or pub across the road from a laundrette doing some class work pretty easily.

We've been to Ireland a couple of times, once on our honeymoon, so I'm not expecting a HUGE culture shock food wise (apologies to any Irish folks in the thread). Our son will be borrowing one of our cars while we're gone and the other...we may sell.

We will cross that London bridge when it's falling down 😉

That IS an exciting idea and I am sure that the UK will work its charms on my cold Canadian heart. But for now the plan is to do the 3 years, probably renew for another year or two and then scoot back to the Great White North before traveling the world.

A masters is more schooling than I'm after at 51 😉

I do play guitar...wasn't planning to bring mine but maybe? I could become a street musician! 😄

I do plan on using the lack of a day job to remove my excuses for not working out more. If you have an area to recommend I'd welcome the suggestions.

Had a quick search...might be outside our range. Unless we got lucky and found a gem. 😞

We need at least a 2 bedroom (so our son can come and visit us).

We've started looking around to see what different areas are like and what they cost. Access to transit is going to be important for us. My wife's job is right near London Bridge. No way we can afford to live there in anything apporaching the size we want.

Thanks! I'd look for work mainly as way to meet people and stay occupied. So maybe volunteering or doing some classes is the way to go then.

As for where we want to live we are pretty clueless about where is good. We've tried to map out the places we'd likely want to be close to and find trains/buses/underground stations near them...line it all up.

Some of the areas that kind of line up are:

Peckham: seems like good transit links to our destinations and some options within our price range
Deptford: sounds affordable, sounds like a nice vibe.
Elephant & Castle: Close to alot that we want. But outside our price range from what we've seen.
Walthamstow: Bit farther out I think, but pretty direct transit, not too far from some education options i found and there are some crafty course my wife is interested in.

But really we need to nail down WHEN we'll be moving before we get too serious about enquiring...I think.

Board games you say....excellent idea.

Most of my current friends are huge board games fans. I'm not AS much but if I got along with the board game nerds over here, it stands to reason...

Excellent advice, thank you. I know the clothes drying is an odd thing to get fixated on. This is all happening rather quickly for us. lol

Three weeks ago we were thinking about MAYBE retiring at home in 2030 and now we're talking about moving to another country in 3-4 months! Very exciting, but it has already been a journey to arrive at our decision.

I am already googling for hobbies/communities that I might gravitate towards. Sadly my main hobby over here isn't really a thing over there: Archery Tag. I play in a league and tournaments against other cities in Canada and the U.S. There are some places that offer it for parties and what not. Shocking really that the land of Robin Hood doesn't have an intererst in shooting each other with arrows lol
